‘The Bible Makes Gruesome Bedtime Reading’: Atheist Group Seeks ‘Bible-Free’ Hotel Rooms Nationwide

Gideons Bible pdMADISON, Wisc. — A professing atheist group known for its activism has sent a letter to hotel chains nationwide, requesting that it make available “Bible-free” rooms for those who do not wish to have a copy of the Scriptures in their room during their stay.

The Wisconsin-based Freedom from Religion Foundation (FFRF) recently wrote to 15 hotel chains to make the request, including Wyndham Worldwide, Marriott International, Best Western, the owners of Holiday Inn, Quality Inn, Hilton Worldwide and Motel 6, and the owner of Radisson, Carlson and Country Inn.

“It’s time that the lodging industry just says NO to the Gideons,” the letter reads. “The Gideon Society is exploiting hotels and motels to proselytize a captive audience.”

It asserts that the Bible is also a bad read for guests.

“The Bible actually makes gruesome bedtime reading,” the correspondence states. “Millions of men, women and children have been harmed by Bible teachings and primitive beliefs in ever-lasting torment, original sin, human sacrifice, lethal or self mutilating ‘tests of faith,’ and religious bigotry.”

“The Bible calls for stoning to death gays, for corporal punishment of children and preaches women’s inferiority and submissiveness,” it said.

FFRF suggested that the hotel chains remove the Bibles from the rooms, but make them available for any that might request a copy. It also recommended that a list of resources be provided for those in crisis. In its press release issue this week, FFRF said that it would prefer Darwin’s “Origin of Species” in the rooms.

“Those who must read the Bible every day will surely take precautions to travel with their own copies,” the group wrote in its plea. “The rest of us deserve a break from mindless evangelizing when we are on vacation.”

Gideons International was founded in 1899 in Janesville, Wisconsin, and first began distributing Bibles in 1908.

“In view of the fact that almost all of the Gideons in the early years of the association were traveling men, the question quite naturally arose regarding how they might be more effective witnesses in the hotels where they spent so much of their time,” the organization explains of its history on its website. “One trustee went so far as to suggest that the Gideons furnish a Bible for each bedroom of the hotels in the United States.”

Gideons International now is active in 190 countries worldwide, and has printed Bibles in over 90 languages.

“Through God’s grace and to His Glory, more than 1.9 billion Bibles and New Testaments have been placed through our association, and the work continues,” the group says.

How can hotel guests be a captive audience with a Gideon Bible inside a drawer? A guest would to have take the effort to look inside under their own volition. It’s not like a classroom situation where everybody hears and sees what the teacher or professor are sharing with the students.

    • Ambulance Chaser

Well, it could apply to children finding and reading it without their parents’ permission. But I would say to any atheist parent who objects to their child reading the Bible (if any such person exists) that it’s your job as a parent to handle that, not anyone else’s.

      • bowie1

When I was a child I don’t recall getting upset about anything in the Bible seeing it as something that recorded particular events or Christian principles. I do remember singing “Jesus Loves Me this I know” or similar songs. I wasn’t too keen on the ladies getting teary at a neighbourhood pentecostal bible club, which didn’t seem to happen in our own Christian Reformed congregation which was much more about being done “in good order”. So far as the Gideons are concerned they always to my knowledge ask permission and they may need to approach individual hotels with their offer since chains may not be quite as openminded.

      • John N

Well, maybe the best way to prevent children from becoming religious is to let them read the bible. Before they are halfway through the OT, they’ll probably be convinced atheists for the rest of their lives.

        • Cady555

          Worked for me.

        • wandakate

JESUS came to set the captives free…He came to seek and to save those who are lost in their sins.
Children need to know the old stories of scripture, they need to know about JESUS, and how only HE can take away their sins and be sure they spend their eternity with Him in the coming kingdom of GOD.
ALL children need bible, the truth instead of Star Wars, and
movie stars, and sports hero’s to look up to as roll models.
My grandmother instilled the word in me when I was growing up and nothing was ever done for me so precious as that teaching. I fell away for many years, but I came back.
Teach them in the way they should go, and when they are old they will NOT depart from it.
NOTHING and NOBODY else can save us except JESUS, there is NO other way.
These people in Wisconsin need to worry about what’s going on there and leave the rest of us alone.
They have NO RIGHT to demand anything from anybody.
Do they think they are GOD? Well, guess what, they ARE NOT!

          • John N

All children need the bible? I don’t think so. Billions of children have grown up without the bible and are doing fine.

They need to know ‘the thruth’? If you think the bible is in any way representing ‘the truth’, I would like to see some independent evidence for that.

And you want children to look to Jesus as a role model? You mean the Jesus that told his followers to leave their family behind and to love him more than their parents, friends and family? The Jesus that promised his followers he would come back during their lifetime and then left them still waiting? Some role model you have there for our children.

And why would they need someone to save them? Save them from what? From your deities own wrath? From his own eternal torturing in hell? Because an old story tells us a fictional character was supposedly tricked by your equally fictional deity in doing something supposedly very wrong? You want all children to actually believe this story and feel guilty for it?

            Well no thanks.

          • wandakate

First of all I noticed you have to up votes, which tells us that people DO NOT agree with this comment…and regrettable for your own sake you don’t know what you’re talking about.
These children you speak of are doing fine according to the world and it’s evil ways, but not according to GOD, they are (like you), lost souls. They are sinners…
The families, parents, children can’t save them from hell. Only JESUS is able to do that.
You’re right they need the TRUTH that will set them free.
The Bible is the best guide that we now have so far. A #1 best seller (how bout that)? Those kids and adults are building their lives on sand instead of on the solid rock which is JESUS. CHRIST is the only solid rock. He is our very present help in times of trouble.
You don’t believe that I know, but you’re sadly mistaken. You’ve been misguided, misinformed, and deceived.
JESUS told His disciples (and followers) that He was going to leave them, and that He was going back to the FATHER GOD. He was going to prepare a place for them, and He said “I will come back for you, that where I am, there you may be also”. And this He is going to do shortly at His appearing, at the 1st resurrection of the dead which is the same as the rapture (the catching away).
He didn’t lie to them, He didn’t forsake them. He keeps His promises. He’s coming again. He’s a “PERFECT” roll model. Why do they need to be saved you asked?, for the simple reason that they will go to “hell” for their eternity otherwise. The “ONLY” way to the Kingdom of GOD is through repentance. We must believe in the name of JESUS in order to be saved and have eternal life. Otherwise it’s eternal damnation.
Our lives are His, they are really not our own.
He blessed you with the breath of life when you were born, and it’s His breath that sustains you. When He (and not you or anybody else) decides to take away that breath, you are dead. That day is NOT in your hands, you have NO control over it, but He does.
And, GOD’s not sending souls (people) to hell, they’re sending themselves by their own merits, actions, works, deeds in this life.
Their stubbornness, their lack of faith, and even their ignorance keeps them from GOD. It’s “not” GOD that does any torturing in hell, no, that’s the job of satan’s demons.
We are to bring up our children in the way they should go (to follow the LORD), and when they are older they will not depart from their early teachings.
YOU will never have any “real” peace without GOD!
You may think you’re getting along just fine, but you are in for a HUGE wakeup call. But, since we have a free will, it’s your own choice, you seal your own fate.

          • John N

Reading this I guess you think you can confince people by using random ALL CAPS.

Maybe that works in church, but not here.

If you really think I do not know what I am talking about, do enlight me. Why don’t you try to convince me by showing actual evidence for your god’s existence, for satan, for eternal life, for heaven or hell? Just one little piece of empirical, verifiable evidence. That might work a lot better, you know.

And what is the meaning of free will if, using it in any way no to the likings of your god, will get you being punished to eternity? If you consider that ‘free will’, you are nothing more than a puppet on a string.

So you think our children should be saved … from satan? Your god created satan. Your god controls satan. If not, he would not be a god. In short, your god must have at least allowed and probably ordered satan to torture people. Again, you want our children to be saved from the cruelty of your own god. And you don’t seem to see any problems in that?

          • Vanessa

But yet u are bothered or dare i say convicted of this “little meaningless book of fairy-tales” while its still in a drawer? Y does it have such a hold on the unsaved? Bc in ur soul u know its real and so are its eternal consequences. I pray u don’t have future like lazurus , whos story shows us we r very conscious after we die. There is unmatched power in the word and as father, God doesn’t want you falling for satan’s lies n ending up in a place He designed for satan and his fallen angels. If a father sacrifices his only son, paying our debt so we could freely get to heaven, i think we crappy and ungrateful children to not accept it. God knows the outcome. He always provides the sacrifice. Its us who reject Him. Anyone who would reject a loving Father paying ur debt, bailing u out of hell and cleaning u of ur own sin deserves whats coming in the second death. Plz open ur eyes before its too late.

          • wandakate

That story of Lazarus was a parable. We know using some common sense that a drop of water on the tongue would not do anything for the hotness or the pain being inflicted in hell…
Did you by any chance Vanessa read these passages. They ALL tell us that the dead are unaware of their surroundings. It’s only the “spirit” within a person that leaves the body at death and goes to be with the LORD. JESUS said, “FATHER, into thy hands I commit my SPIRIT” Our soul is not immortal.
We go to the grave and basically are in a sleep like state as just NOT knowing anything.
John 11:11-14…Tells us that Lazarus sleeps. JESUS said, “But I will go that I may awaken him out of sleep…Then JESUS said to them plainly, Lazarus is dead.
Job 14:12-21…This tells us that when we lie down (in the grave), we won’t rise again until the heavens are no more. We shall not “awake” or be raised out of our “sleep”. We won’t know who comes to honor us (who visits our grave).
Psalm 104:29…This one tells us that our breath is taken away (the breath of life), and we return to the dust, we simply die. We don’t go to Heaven or Hell right then.
Ecclesiastes 9: 5-10…Here we find that the living know that they will die; but the dead know not anything. Everything is meaningless in the grave.
These verses clarify where the dead really are, they ARE NOT in Heaven or Hell, they are waiting in their graves for JESUS to come again and judge them. Until then, they know NOTHING!

          • John N

‘Bc in ur soul u know its real and so are its eternal consequences’

Well, if that would not convince the most unbelieving atheist, what else would?

          • NGN

you are indoctrinating children into your magical thinking..nothing more. children should have the right to make up their own minds about religion. my kids have no idea that I’m an atheist. They can decide for themselves…..

So there’s this thing called “not reading something you don’t want to”…

    • http://ianbrettcooper.blogspot.com/ Ian Brett Cooper

There’s also this thing called throwing tracts that spread messages of hate into the garbage. If Christians can’t leave hotels alone, I’ll just start doing that if I see this filth in future.

      • afchief

Saying that homosexuality is sin is hate?

Romans 1:18-28 (NASB) For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. 21 For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures.

24 Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. 25 For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

26 For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, 27 and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing [h]indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error.

28 And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper,

        • John N

          ‘Leviticus 20:
1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying:

13: If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.’

Now of course this has nothing at all to do with hate. This is only your all loving god showing his compassion for the humans he himself supposedly created in the first place. This is the kind of deity you worship. And this is the kind of talk you throw towards homosexuals. No hate at all, just expressing your love.

          • afchief

Homosexuality is sin! God is warning you that if you continue in this sin you will die. Jesus came to give us life. Satan comes to deceive and kill.
            Homosexuality is deception and death.

Give your heart to Jesus and live!!!

          • John N

Sin is a religious concept without any impact or consequences in the real world. Sin is a way for religious leaders to control and manipulate people. And as it is clear from your bible, sin has been used to justify hating and even murdering people that think or behave otherwise, like homosexuals.

In that sence the concept of sin is leading to deception and death. Of otherwise innocent people.

          • afchief

Nope sin is real. And whether you admit or not, you know right from wrong i.e. sin!!! When you leave this earth, you will be without excuse for your actions.

Amen.

26 For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, 27 and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error.

28 And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper,

          • John N

Oh right. Sin is real. And to prove that you are quoting from a 2000 year old book written by unknown authors with a religious agenda. That is really convincing.

Yes, I know right from wrong in most situations. It is thanks to empathy and experience. Sin has nothing to do with it. To illustrate that, most people in the first world, myself included, consider homosexual relations a good thing. For fundamentalist christians it is a sin to be punished by death.

          • Scott Calo

As a Christian who believes homosexuality is a sin I can assure you, we don’t want to see homosexuals killed, at least not all/most of us. And it’s not that we’re afraid of homosexuality. It doesn’t affect us at all unless you tell everyone and parade it through the streets (which, I admit, makes a pretty awkward situation for us). Honestly I don’t know why so many of us focus on homosexuality, except that that’s been the sin that people have become more and more accepting of recently, and it makes Christianity seem offputting just because we say it’s a sin. All we’re trying to do is save people.

          • wandakate

We’re supposed to love the sinner and hate the sin. GOD actually loves ALL people, and wants them to come to the knowledge of truth.
He wants ALL of us who sin at all to confess our sins, then to repent of them, and finally to forsake them for our own sake.
Sinners won’t be in the Kingdom of GOD. Its NOT at all easy to follow CHRIST, or obey all of the Moral laws of the 10 Commandments, however it will be worth the effort in the end when we are told , “Come, enter into the Kingdom that my FATHER has prepared for you, from the foundations of the earth”. JESUS will tell us to enter, His good and faithful servants. Our faith without our works is dead.
We are saved by faith, but will be judged by our works.
Our deeds, our efforts, our actions do matter. It’s not hyper grace, no it’s our works, for JESUS did say, “I am coming, and my reward is with me, to give to each according to his WORKS shall be”.
YES, we have their good at heart, and we can lead them to it, IF they will listen, but they are like horses, you can lead them to water, but you can’t make them drink,
They have a free will to make their own choices and thus seal their own fate.

          • wandakate

Everybody will die afchief, this is speaking of a spiritual death. I mention that b/c there may be people on this site that do not realize when we say, you will die, that it means a spiritual death and not a physical death. As we are all born to die.
They will die a spiritual death and be totally separated from GOD and anything good “forever”.
The way to avoid this is to
            1. confess your sins
            2. repent of them
            3. forsake them
            4. trust GOD
            5. rely on GOD
            6. have faith in GOD
            7. obey His word and put forth effort to serve him
            8. be baptized to show your confession of an inward faith.
You will then have a new heart and a new sense of belonging to the family of GOD. All of the old will go away and the new will come in. Praise the LORD, as it’s the best thing a person is able to do for Himself for eternity.

          • John N

A spiritual dead you say. Any evidence that such a thing as a spirit actually exists? I mean , separate from the body?

          • wandakate

GOD gives us a free will to make our own choices. We can choose to worship Him or we can’t choose not to…We actually seal our own fate. We send ourselves to hell, GOD “never” sends anybody there. JESUS came to set the captives free, and to seek and to save those who are lost and in need of a SAVIOR, as we aren’t able to save ourselves.
Homosexuality is a SIN, as all sin is sin. JESUS said, “IF you have broken one of these commandments, you’ve broken them ALL”.

          • John N

God gives us free will to make our own choice. And then he punishes us forever when we use that free will in a way he doesn’t like. Some ‘free’ will you have got there, no thanks.

And again, sin is a religious concept with no impact or consequences on reality. Please keep it there.

      • Becky

And, yet, you’re here…on a Christian based site. Glutton for punishment, are ya?

        • NGN

no punishment to be found here. what punishment? this is entertainment.

      • Stan

There’s also this thing called thievery when you take property that doesn’t belong to you. It’s what people do who lack morals. Who made you the thought police to deprive others from literature you don’t agree with? Gee, if you don’t like the filth in the hotel’s TV will you throw that away too?!

        • wandakate

We can barely watch television at all without seeing or hearing FILTH. ABC is very bad, there is very little on there that I watch ever. I’m on the weather channel more than any other channel b/c it’s just about all I can find that’s at least decent.
Homosexuals on tv, and bad language, and people shooting people, it’s all bad. I think that instead of removing the bibles, they should consider removing all those evil vile televisions. People should go to the room to sleep or rest or read and take a shower, not watch all that filth…anybody with me (ha ha )?

          • NGN

            nope

      • Scott Calo

Why would you? Hotels providing Bibles via the Gideons is a commodity that doesn’t affect anyone who chooses not to read it. It’s like the little bottles of soap they leave in the shower – You can bring your own soap, or just not shower, but they leave them there just in case you need them.

  • http://ianbrettcooper.blogspot.com/ Ian Brett Cooper

I’ve been pleasantly surprised to see no Gideon Bibles in the last few hotels I’ve stayed at. I think hotel chains were already getting the message that the Bible is a violent, depraved and misogynistic hate tract.

    • Oboehner

But hey at least you have the porn channel, that’s not misogynistic at all.

      • WorldGoneCrazy

Excellent reply – one of your finest!

        • Valri

          And woefully inaccurate, as always.

          • Oboehner

Right, no women are victimized by porn at all…

          • Valri

Of course they are. And that includes by fundamentalist Christians who partake of it.

          • Oboehner

It does, but atheists seem to be ok with that.

      • John N

The religious mind at work – again.

        • Oboehner

          Porn is not very religious.

          • John N

So why did you come up with it? It seems religious people only think of two items when entering a hotel room – were is the bible and where is the porn channel?

          • Valri

I’ve read that the “Bible Belt” states are the fondest of it in fact.

          • wandakate

Fondest of what the porn channel or the HOLY BIBLE?

          • Lucid

Bible belt states view the most porn, have the most teen pregnancies, have the highest rates of obesity and the lowest rates of education as well as the most poor. Seems all that believing aint producing much prosperity.

          • wandakate

REALLY??? well I be darn…I wouldn’t have ever known that. But you see I am from Alabama, and I NEVER looked at porn, I didn’t get pregnant as a teenager, my first child wasn’t born until I was 22. I’ve never been obese either, the most I’ve ever weight is 176, and now I’m down to 150. How bout that ya’ll? And as for education, I am a retired teacher, play piano, write poems, lyrics to Christian music, and have written 5 manuscripts and the first one is going to the publisher this week for printing.
Let’s see now, what else were you bashing the south about, oh yes, I see it, they are poor (mostly poor). My grandfather was in construction and he was responsible for building 1/2 of the town that I grew up in down south in the state of Alabama, isn’t that amazing? I wasn’t poor either, was living in a stone and brick house that grandpa and his crew build for my grandma. Now talk about a miracle, low and behold.

I tell you what, I just don’t for the life of me know how on earth this was all done. If you know, please clue me in…Really, this is totally amazing, we all must have been truly blessed because it’s not according to you happening to all of those other “poor” people way down in the south.
My word ya’ll, I just don’t know, mercy me, ain’t it something? It’s a miracle I know that I’m even able to use this here puter machine of mine, took me years you know
to figure this all out, so I’m so “dumb”, but thank the LORD I believed in Him and He has just plum saved the day…blessings.

          • Cady555

And your personal experience changes the facts about average, regional demographics exactly how?

          • Oboehner

Like the Bible that seems to offend the whiney atheists, the porn channel is readily available – yet that is ok in your book, no matter how many people suffer from it.

          • John N

Does it? What book do you think atheists use? And why would atheists not care about people suffering form porn?

And where are porn channels defined not OK in your bible? I must have missed that chapter.

          • Oboehner

            “Does it?” That’s obvious.
“What book do you think atheists use?” Not worthy of the bandwidth.
“And why would atheists not care about people suffering form porn?” They are bordering on psychosis in their obsession with people’s belief in God, yet not a peep on the porn channel – you do the math (or have someone help you).
“I must have missed that chapter.” That’s not all you’ve missed.

          • John N

Porn channels don’t try to change the law to promote their religion. Porn channels don’t try to push their religion onto our children. And porn channels don’t have these nice discussion boards. Anything else?

          • Oboehner

Neither does a book, anything else?
Atheists, however try to change the law to promote their religion.

          • John N

            So do they? Example please?

          • Oboehner

            Read the article.

          • John N

            I did. Example please?

            To be more specific:
. Evidence of atheism being a religion?
. Evidence of atheists trying to change the law to promote atheism?

          • Oboehner

            – Athieism is a belief system as much as any other religion, and since (and as Richard Dawkins put it) Of course we can’t prove that there isn’t a God. Therefore atheism requires faith that there is no supreme being – hence a religion. Not only that the courts have declared atheism a religion
            – being declared a legal religion covers part 2.

          • John N

Atheism is a lack of belief in any gods. No faith involved.

Until you finally give us any evidence of your god, the default position is no gods exist. No proof needed.

Religion is defined by Wikipedia as ‘an organized collection of beliefs, cultural systems, and world views that relate humanity to an order of existence’. Atheism is not a collection of beliefs. It does not relate humanity to an order of existence. Therefore, it is no religion.

So where did atheists try and change the law to promote atheism again?

          • Valri

            Still hiding, I get it.

          • wandakate

It’s not WERE is the bible, it’s WHERE! Maybe you should consider some spelling classes.

          • John N

Spelling? Like not using random caps in the middle of a sentence?

          • wandakate

You can do that when typing an important word or name…
It’s how to elevate something or someone. It’s how to magnify something or someone, to show importance.
            example:
May the GOD of this world bless you and keep you and make HIS face to shine upon you and give you peace.

          • WorldGoneCrazy

Love that Aaronic blessing verse from Numbers – thanks, Wandakate!

          • wandakate

Not sure what you’re talking about. I write ALOT on here, therefore I looked back but don’t see anything form Numbers…Refresh my memory please.

          • WorldGoneCrazy

22 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 23 “Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, ‘This is the way you shall bless the children of Israel. Say to them:

            24 “The Lord bless you and keep you;
25 The Lord make His face shine upon you,
            And be gracious to you;
26 The Lord lift up His countenance upon you,
            And give you peace.”’

27 “So they shall put My name on the children of Israel, and I will bless them.” — Numbers 6

          • John N

Well, it is a real pity it does not make something true.

          • wandakate

Porn is NOT RELIGIOUS AT ALL, there is no very to it. It’s disgusting and vile and full of filth and evil. Straight out of the pits of hell, as we know satan came to kill, steal and destroy. One of his mediums is the television and especially a porn channel, gross.

          • Lucid

I guess all those televangelists like Pat Robertson are straight from the devil then?

      • bowie1

I believe it was the Marriott Hotel Chain that stopped offering porn. I suppose if anybody is that obsessed about porn, probably can get it on their own electronic device.

        • Oboehner

The point seems to be missed, the atheist group is going after Bibles yet is giving porn a pass even given the damage it does. Says a lot.

    • afchief

      You are a liar!!!!

    • Scott Calo

It is a fact that Christians are not required by the Bible to hate anyone.

  • http://www.bing.com/ Martin Smit

How can atheists pretend to care about gruesome? Don’t they believe that everything is a meaningless, gruesome and pointless tale, something like Game of Thrones? I think I missed their protests against Mortal Kombat, but I must admit that I don’t really listen when they speak.

    • Cady555

How about asking an atheist and listening to the answer? Personally, I find life more meaningful post religion and I am more compassionate.

      • http://www.bing.com/ Martin Smit

You’re so not post religion. Posting about how you hate Christian religion is not “meaningful post religion”. Maybe patting those on the back who share your new error does qualify as some kind of compassion though.

        • Cady555

          You know this how?

And when have i posted that I hate the Christian religion?

          • http://www.bing.com/ Martin Smit

Unless you are a paid propagandist, I can conceive no other reason than hate for your hostility and prejudice. God will judge men’s secrets through Jesus Christ. No amount of hostility and bluster will prevent this.

  • Chris Clayton

I see no reason that hotels need support the Gideons in their desire to proselytize to the world. That kind of arrogance may just deserve a “no thank you.”

    • Nidalap

Well, how about this: If they want to do it, it’s none of your beeswax! 🙂

    • bowie1

I understand that the Gideon Bibles come at no charge so the hotels are not out when it comes to expenses.

      • wandakate

Freely we receive, freely we give. The LORD loves the Gideons b/c they freely give, and the LORD loves a cheerful giver. The Salvation Army also freely gives. Once in Virginia they paid our entire electric bill b/c we didn’t have the money and they company was going to turn off our power in the winter in Virginia where it can get very cold, but they came through with flying colors.
There is GOOD in the world that will be rewarded, and the bad in the world will be punished.

  • lee metzger

Time for the atheists to build their own hotels. Then everyone can sin to their heart’s content, and not have to worry about that “dreadful” Bible.

    • WorldGoneCrazy

Atheists are too busy building “There is No God” homeless shelters, “Freedom from Thought” orphanages, and “Take Down that Cross” hospitals. 🙂

THERE IS A GOD, THERE IS A JESUS (YESHUA-original name).
        THERE IS FREEDOM OF THOUGHT.
WE DON’T NEED TO TAKE DOWN ANY CROSSES.

    • Cady555

There are quite a number of secular charities. They are distinguished by the fact that they do not require a statement of belief before offering services or force hungry people to listen to religious indoctrination before being given food.

      • lee metzger

And just exactly WHAT does your comment have to do with what I poste? As far as what you DID say, those people are HUNGRY because obviously your SECULAR charities weren’t meeting their need for food. And it’s not religious indoctrination, it’s called giving people the gospel of Jesus Christ, the very thing they and all people need in order to deal effectively with the sin problem that plagues all of us. Not all Christian charities do what you mentioned either. A fellow church in my denomination always invites the homeless in for a free turkey dinner on Thanksgiving. There is no “indoctrination” of any sort, unless you call a prayer asking God to bless the food, indoctrination. This church gives out food and clothing to the homeless with no strings attached whatsoever. They do that because they know salvation is a God-job from beginning to end. They simply meet the physical need, and rely on God to do the rest.

  • Becky

“…the letter reads. “The Gideon Society is exploiting hotels and motels to proselytize a captive audience.”

Captive audience? Lol…only if you force yourself to stay in your hotel room and then proceed to force yourself to read it.

And, these are the accusations heathens make against the word of God, especially from those who’ve never…ever…read a single word from the bible.

    • Cady555

Most atheists have read the bible and have s good knowledge of its contents.

      • Coach

No, actually most anti-theists are the most self righteous people I’ve ever met, placing themselves to be gods, they suppress the truth of what can be known of God out of love for sin. If I close my eyes while running a red light, I still am accountable.

Anti-theists have no knowledge of the Bible, but to prove me wrong, explain away. You hate God so much, because you love sin and want to be your own god.

        • Cady555

Thanks for the kind words. 🙂

I’ve read the bible. My personal morals are unchanged with and without religion. I hate god no more or less than I “like” or “hate” Obi Wan Kenobi or Darth Vader. I might find the behavior of a small percentage of Darth Vader fans obnoxious, but this does not equate to hating a fictional character.

          • Nidalap

I’m sure you must go to the Star Wars sites to show your disagreement with them as well then! What, no? Oh dear…you MAY have a BIT more, ah, passion towards the Christians then! 🙂

          • Cady555

When Star Wars fans start passing laws that interfere with my freedom in order to please Lord Vader, I may well visit their site to let them know not everyone agrees with them regarding Darth Vader.

          • Nidalap

I see! And the law you are protesting with regards to Bibles in hotel rooms is…? 🙂

          • Cady555

No law. This is just about customers communicating their preference.

It is still valuable for people to be aware of people with different views if we are all going to live on this planet together.

          • Nidalap

Those customers being the members of the FFRF? Are you sure the old “We have to remove your beliefs from society so we can all live on this planet together.” idea is really the best way to go? 🙂

          • Cady555

Who is removing religious beliefs from society?

If I check into a hotel and find literature on the evils of wearing perfume, I would complain because I didn’t pay good money only for someone else to push random beliefs on me. (And I don’t even wear perfume.)

This in no way stifles the Perfume Haters of America. But as a customer of the hotel, my rented space is not the place or time for someone else’s agenda. Same with religious proselytizing.

          • Nidalap

Who is removing…? Everyone together now, what does the acronym FFRF stand for? 🙂

          • Cady555

Freedom From Religion Foundation. We all have a right to be free from participating in religion against our will. Their primary focus is standing up to people attempting to use government to promote religion. The goal is a government that is welcoming to all religious views while giving special preference to none. Note that while they object to “in god we trust” on government property, they never suggest putting up “no god we trust.” The goal is government neutrality.

Occasionally they comment on things that impact secular consumers, for example religious promotion in a service we have paid for.

You will note that FFRF has never objected to religious expression by anyone on their own time and dime. Also note that freedom from government imposition of religion protects you also. The principle that says school teachers can’t lead their class in prayers to Jesus is the same one that prevents a teacher from leading prayers to Allah or the goddess of the harvest.

          • Cady555

No one is removing religion from society. No one wants to. I don’t. And I would defend the right.of individuals to practice their chosen religion.

You can bring a bible along with you. Many hotels now keep a small library with a variety of devotional texts for customers to choose from. This actually expands access to religion, it’s just that one is no longer special.

Seriously, in reading about totalitarian regimes throughout history, the common thread is thought police. The government determined that some beliefs were correct and appro

Liar! You’ve never read the Bible and know nothing about it, you hate God so much that you deny His existence. You need to repent, eternity is serious business and you willfully deny the One who sustains your life

          • NGN

the only liar here is you. just spewing your nonsense and false accusations. you are pathetic

No thanks. Been there, done that.

        • Lucid

Why do you assume that atheists “sin”? You do know its a sin to wear clothing made from mixed materials? You best get on your knees now and start repenting.

        • NGN

one cannot hate that which does not exist…but keep telling yourself that if it makes you feel better

      • Becky

        Rubbish.

        • Cady555

Google “atheist v christian bible knowledge.”

          • Becky

            More rubbish.

          • Cady555

Exactly which facts found by that google search do you believe are rubbish?

My transition from Christian to Atheist was due in large part to reading the entire Bible, not just the popular sound bites, and paying attention to what the book actually says.

          • Becky

For example, according to Pew, it’s not “bible knowledge” that atheists supposedly excel in…it’s religion. They can tell you a lot about religion, maybe even all religions, but they’re lacking regarding the knowledge of Christianity and/or the Holy Bible. Why? It’s hard to be open to the truth when your heart is already set against it. Even if atheists knew the bible from cover to cover, they’re still lacking the knowledge that is imparted by God to those who believe in him. The bible is filled with such passages.

          • Cady555

            I believed for decades.

          • Lucid

Believe what you want (which you obviously do) but atheists often are much more well versed in holy scriptures than the actual adherents of the faith – most certainly including the bible. As previously mentioned this knowledge is typically what lead to their atheism. Its difficult to read the entire holy texts and not be appalled by the callous uncivilized brutalities contained within. Not to mention the sheer inconsistencies and outright BS.

          • NGN

The US Religious Knowledge Survey, released Tuesday from the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life, found atheists and agnostics know more basic facts about the Bible than either Protestants or Catholics.

          • NGN

she wont as thumpers are allergic to facts

    • wandakate

They are in the nitestand drawers, they are NOT sitting up on the dresser or on the nitestands.
IF you open the drawer, and there is one there and you do not want to look in it or read it then simply just CLOSE THE DRAWER…that’s common sense.
The Gideons have as much of a RIGHT to have them there as these people do to request they be removed. It’s just another attack on GOD, to remove Him and His word from society.
I take my own BIBLE with me, I do my own reading.
Them being in the drawers are not offensive to anybody. These people are like the people at the Westboro Baptist Church, they blow everything out of proportion. Try to “take over” and “CONTROL” others.
IF people allow them to do this, they have succeeded in helping satan all the more, but if these companies put down their foot and say NO, we will not do this, then glory be to GOD, and the companies that allow them will prosper, the ones that don’t will not.
      What goes around, comes around.
JESUS said, “Deny me, and I will deny you before my FATHER which is in Heaven”.
These people in Wisconsin are going to have some serious accounting to do and will spend their eternities in hell (totally separated from GOD and everything good) forever, if they don’t denounce these sins…

    • NGN

and again, you have zero idea about what you’re saying. I was raised in the church and baptized. I have read the bible cover to cover and studied it…that’s all it took to realize it was nothing more than old fables and stories….nothing more

    • Cady555

Saying that the people who object to the presence of gideon bibles have “never…ever…read a single word from the bible” is incorrect and wholely unsupported by facts.

We object because we have read it. I seem to recall something about bearing false witness.

  • WorldGoneCrazy

“FFRF said that it would prefer Darwin’s “Origin of Species” in the rooms.”

Yes, because nothing says “comfort” to your children more than to be taught that rats are your relatives, cockroaches are you cousins, and your life is a meaningless purposeless accident that will end in eternal non-existence.

    • wandakate

ABSOLUTELY CRAZY. Who in the world do these people (FFRD) think they are, that they write letters, and send e-mails to all these different companies and others demanding to make a change for satan as opposed to GOD?????
I know this much…If Christians would get up and do what these people are doing, we would certainly be making a difference for the Kingdom of GOD.
We must be saved first yes, and THEN we must do GOD’s work on earth. We are saved by grace, but will be judged by our WORKS.
The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.
They (the FFRD) are doing what they strongly believe, even though it’s not right with GOD, they are still standing up for their beliefs.
We as Christians NEED to be DOING the same WORK that they are doing.
They want them removed from the rooms, and what do we want?
Our voices are just as important, more important than theirs are as we are here as representatives of the living GOD and His son JESUS CHRIST.
Why is it that they have backbone, and guts and the willingness to stand for what they believe and we don’t?????
What was the will of the FATHER…Go and preach the gospel to all living creatures and then the end will come. GO ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the FATHER, the SON, and the HOLY SPIRIT, teaching them to observe all these things whatsoever I have commanded you, and low I am with you always, even until the end of the world.
NOW, the rest is up to us…are you devising a plan for JESUS?
He said, “Not everyone who says to me, LORD, LORD will enter the Kingdom of GOD, but “only” those who do the will of the FATHER”.
      What is the FATHER’s will?

      • Lucid

“Our voices are just as important, more important than theirs are as we
are here as representatives of the living GOD and His son JESUS CHRIST.”

        Wow. You are insane.

        • wandakate

You need to take your medicine now, it’s overdue. Have you taken your nap yet? Did you look in the mirror lately? You are the ONLY one on here that things I’m insane.

          ditto

    • Lucid

Reality often isnt warm and fuzzy.

  • Nidalap

Oh dear! How will the FFRF prevail here? Hmm…maybe some government officials stay in the hotel sometimes! Yeah, that’s it. They can claim they’re getting government money from them when they pay! Once they’ve taken money from the government, it owns them. Everyone knows that!
So, hotels, you can no longer have Bibles because…Constitution! (^_^)

    • Cady555

What does this have to do with government? There is no threat of legal action because this is not a legal issue. This is about consumers expressing a preference.

  • Guillermo Tonge

An interesting detail that some may not be aware of but David Suchet, the principal actor of UK series, Agatha Christie’s “Poirot”, began his spiritual journey towards His Messiah Jesus, through reading a Gideons New Testament he picked up in a New York Hotel whilst on location there. His own story was once he picked the New Testament up and began to read, he couldn’t put it down, he was so captivated by the person of Christ. Why don’t the secular atheists raise some funds and put Darwin’s ‘Origin of the Species’ in hotels? I’m sure we’d all get captivated by the beaks of Galopagos Islands finches!!

    • wandakate

I travel and I look in the drawer to see what’s there, when I find them I will trash them, not in the hotel rooms, or motel rooms or the bread and breakfast, NO< I will personally take them to the hotel dumpster or better yet take them with me for disposal…

      • Lucid

        You seem completely nuts.

  • Coach

People fail to recognize the massive genocides Darwin has and still does influence. They hate God, let’s pray “Father please forgive them for they know not what they do” only in the power of Christ can we love our enemies.

    • Cady555

Evolution does not influence genocide any more than Gravity or Atomic
Theory. It is simply science. However, humans can use anything as an excuse to mistreat other people.

      • wandakate

HATE and mistreating others only comes from one place and that is the kingdom of satan below…ALL bad comes from the EVIL ONE!!!

        • John N

So … any evidence of his existence, this EVIL ONE? If he/she is the source of all things bad, that can not be so difficult, can it? I mean, he/she must be a very busy person…

        • Cady555

Where did the “EVIL ONE!!!” come from?

          • wandakate

Sounds like a trick question, but I just told you above, it comes from the kingdom of satan below. The answer is already there.
Who is satan? He’s was actually at one time a very beautiful angel, but he decided to disrespect GOD and disobey. He wanted to be like GOD, he wanted to be a god, therefore he abandoned his post and decided to take 1/3 of all the angels in Heaven with him and that’s what he did and GOD in all his “power”, dismissed them from the Heavenly place. They left and came to earth. They’re still here, they are invisible spiritual beings that we don’t see and they are now demons, not qualified to be angels any longer.
So now it’s a home called “hell” for all of them and they want company. They strive hard 24/7 to do evil and get people to be on their dark side to get back at GOD. They “hate” GOD’s people and focus on ruining them. Satan came to kill, to steal, and to destroy humanity and that is now what he’s busy focusing on. He is at present time the god of this evil world, but JESUS is coming and will take possession of this world away from him, and then he loses all of it. That Cady555 is the ‘EVIL ONE”.

I used to believe all of that.

Never did figure out how to reconcile that with Isaiah who said god created evil.

Ok, could you please provide that chapter and verse for me…I actually don’t recall reading that.

            Isaiah Chap 45, verse 7

Thanks, I read it…How on earth do we explain GOD. He is a mystery. Like the mystery of the ages. I do know he lets the wheat grow with the tare, and in the end His angels will sort them out. I do know His ways are not our ways and His thoughts are not our thoughts.
However, with that being said, I also realize that we have a free will to choose right from wrong.
GOD possibly created evil so that we would discern it and know it when it was right in front of our faces.
I believe we are tested, and will suffer trials and tribulations in this life to purify us and cleanse us and make us like He wants us to be.
He created satan who was a beautiful angel in all his ways, until evil was found in him.
Satan is now “evil” to the core and so are 1/3 of the angels he took to earth with him. Those angels are evil now just like their master satan b/c now they are demons, they follow their evil god and not the GOD of heaven and earth.
Can I explain GOD, no, none of us can do that. IF He in fact made good and evil then it was His right to do that as questioning GOD doesn’t solve the mystery.

So, they are afraid that having the Bible in a drawer might evangelize someone? Watch out atheists you might feel the need to read a bible on your vacation. Perhaps it is a demon that has you blinded from the truth and that is afraid you might open the drawer and read God’s love letter to you and be changed by God’s awesome redemption plan. When did you give up your right to choose, atheists? For in agreeing with this organization you in fact have given up your right to choose to either open the drawer and pull the Bible out to read it or to close the drawer and not read it but either way this organization doesn’t want you to have a right to choose!

I think we can rightly call that “CONTROL”…A person or an organization that doesn’t want you to have a right to choose is trying to take “CONTROL”…
We have a right to choose, if we have any brain left, if we have not allowed them to dumb us down to their level. IF we have an ounce of common sense we can still choose and we know right from wrong too, don’t we?

        exactly…

  • craigjohnson

don’t read it if you don’t want to.
don’t shower or use the toilet either.
don’t open the window or curtains .. so we shouldn’t have them then???
don’t watch the tv or use the mini bar .. so what? ya, it’s just a “book” to you, relax.

    1) The Bibles are placed in a drawer. You have to chose to open the drawer to find it.
    2) Only an idiot would read certain passages in the Bible to children.

I like to leave a colorful “My Little Pony” bookmark leading the kids to Ezekiel 23:20 (which I’ve helpfully circled for them).

    Kids love stories about horsies…
