WASHINGTON (NBC News) More cases of sexually transmitted diseases were reported last year than ever before, federal officials said Wednesday—just as state and local health departments that could help fight them lose funding.

More than 1.5 million people were reported with chlamydia, the most common sexually transmitted disease (STD), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported.

The CDC recorded nearly 400,000 cases of gonorrhea and nearly 24,000 cases of syphilis.

“The STD epidemic is getting worse in the United States and, in fact, is at its highest levels yet,” said Dr. Jonathan Mermin, director of CDC’s National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention.

This reprinting put it’s jump right before a critical detail in the story: the trend of rising reports in STD cases is largely attributed to poor education in sexual health. This would correlate to what we’ve seen in states that put greater emphasis on that, such as Colorado, which has had a very progressive stance on sex ed and birth control (including giving birth control away for free) for the last five years and has seen a precipitous drop in STDs and unwanted pregnancies. I’d love to see a heatmap of these cases. I’m sure it would be very educational.

But syphilis is in no way confined to big names, nor is it a sexually transmitted infection (STI) of the past. The 2016 Public Health England (PHE) syphilis report has shown that infection rates are on the up, with disproportionate rates in London. In 2015, the capital accounted for 56% of all cases in England, with a 22% increase in diagnoses in the year 2014-15. Since 2010 the number of cases of syphilis in Londoners has increased by 163%, with a 22% increase in the year from 2014 to 2015. The borough of Lambeth has the highest rates, closely followed by the City of London and Southwark.

Men who have sex with men (MSM) represented 90% of all syphilis cases in 2015, with a 232% increase in diagnosis over the last five years, said the report. More than half of the MSM diagnosed with syphilis in 2015 were also infected with HIV, and over half additionally tested positive for a separate STI. Rates in heterosexuals remain stable but are higher than ideal.

It’s 2016. Safe sex campaigns and targeted prevention efforts are in place. Sexual health care is free and accessible to both high and low risk groups. So what is going on?

The basic science can’t be sugar coated. More condomless sex leads to higher rates of syphilis, (and gonorrhoea, chlamydia, HIV … the list goes on). Untreated syphilis means the disease continues to be passed on and leads to potentially horrifying long-term medical complications. Action is needed now to address the reasons behind these patterns, particularly in MSM, the group most affected.

In MSM, higher numbers of partners is a key reason behind the heavily inflated rates, compounded by the use of apps such as Grindr, venue based and group sex. The reported increased use of Chemsex (recreational drugs used during sex) is also of concern, lowering sexual inhibitions and making the likelihood of using a condom less likely.

Another worrying phenomenon is “sero-sorting” – when men choose partners who have the same HIV status, in theory negating the need to use a condom. However, this puts both partners at high risk of contracting a plethora of STIs.

  • What It Is

America is at a lower level now than Sodom and Gomorrah. It’s no surprise that people actually build their whole identities around their “sexual orientation,” for most of them, sex is the chief goal in life. Essentially, people have reduced themselves to animals. They eat, drink, sleep, and have sex.

  • ComeOnPeople!

    hmmm I wonder why?

    • TwoRutRoad

      Because it’s a Christian nation.

      • ComeOnPeople!

ahahaha so it’s Christians faults when mankind commits sins which bring forth diseases? Those evil Christians, I tell you!

        • TwoRutRoad

You hear it all the time…”This is a CHRISTIAN nation! If you don;t like it, then leave!” If Christians are the majority, then they claim the bad parts, too.

          • ComeOnPeople!

Problem is there is a big difference in those who never crack the book and have a relationship with their CREATOR and those who wing it. The majority of Christianity is simply traditions and doctrines of men. A person who follows their CREATOR and has a relationship with HIM isn’t religious, as a matter of fact most of those people wouldn’t be caught dead in any mainstream Christian church. They simply study scripture, pray and walk out what they believe. The word Christian means Christ like… if they don’t act the part … they are not what they claim to be.

  • ComeOnPeople!

Let me just say that one man, one woman together until death do they part , does not contract sexually transmitted diseases. WHY? Because this is GOD’s design for sexual relationship .

    • TheKingOfRhye

The exact same would apply to two men or two women, wouldn’t it?

      • Ken Faivor

All sickness is the result of sin. If you escape STD’s but then develop a brain tumor or cancer, are you better off?

        • ComeOnPeople!

Yep but most people just don’t understand this. They don’t view homosexual practices as sin nor adultery or drunkenness , nor promiscuity . They see all such practices as their right to pervert the design and principles of their CREATOR. And so we try to reason with them of the dangers not only in the natural but in the spiritual realm. Not only do they harm their flesh when they rebel against GOD but they also refuse the offer of redemption.

        • uninvitedguest

LOL! Illness is a result of many factors but “sin” isnt one of them. Funny stuff.

      • ComeOnPeople!

I have never studied on lesbian sexual activity so I can not answer for that situation but I can answer in regard to Homosexual sexual activity. Documented studies on anal sex have proven to cause disease and even straight couples are at risk if they use the preform anal sex. Go look it up and you will find that anal sex not only has a high chance of spreading disease but also puts the person at risk of a perforated bowl and even death. So for lesbians… I have no clue, but thank you for asking the question so I can start doing a study on their disease rate in comparison to that of homosexuals or straight couples. But for now and with the studies I have done… homosexual sex is one of the most dangerous sex practices. It spreads the most disease and causes the most injury or death to the recipient . I know what you will reply so let me answer ahead of time to well some homosexuals don’t have anal sex. Well then I guess they just do what straight men do when alone and well then no problem with disease . As to homosexuals and lesbians being with one partner? The facts show that these groups have many many many partners over the course of their lives, whereas with heterosexual having many many many partners is a rarity .

      • Amos Moses

        Except it does not ……….

        • TheKingOfRhye

          Yes, it does.

  • Tower of Power

The numbers are heavily skewed by homosexual men. Among heterosexuals, rates have changed very little.

  • TwoRutRoad

I know how to find the cure for these and many other diseases. Give your money to medical research instead of the church. Just a billion dollars would help, no need to take it ALL away from the churches. You could even give specifically to cancer, or heart disease if sex makes you queasy. God would surely approve. How could he not?
