Gutenberg Bible, World’s First Printed Copy of Scripture, Now Available Online

(Evangelical Focus) The Gutenberg Bible, preserved in the National Library of France (BnF), can be consulted online at Gallica, the institution’s digital library.

“The two copies preserved in the BnF can now be consulted in Gallica. A summary have been added, to make the navigation of the biblical text more comfortable and to satisfy the needs of the researchers and the curious,” the BnF said in a statement this Monday.

Digitized in high definition, the two copies of the Gutenberg Bible (only fifty are left in the world) were printed in the first printing office of Gutenberg, with movable types, circa 1455.

    Gutenberg print also made luthers German translation available to the common people of Germany and was instrumental for the reformation.

  • It’s great to get a look at the actual thing! The written greek manuscript codex sinaiticus (such as it is) is also published on-line. This is arguably a strategic error by the people who held up sinaiticus as the oldest and bestest and most-well-hidden-ever-est manuscript for 150 years, and managed not to expose it to critical analysis. On the basis of sinaiticus, its errors, and those of vaticanus and alexandrinus have been imported into modern bibles, and served up as God’s truth.
