USC Professor Claims Ray Comfort’s ‘Evolution vs. God’ Documentary Is ‘Biblical Porn’

Craig StanfordDENVER – A well-known evolutionary professor stated in a recent interview that those who do not accept evolution are “fundamentally irrational” with “a kind of slightly crazy mindset,” and claimed that a Christian apologist’s evolution-challenging film is “a great example” of “Biblical porn.”

Craig Stanford is a professor of anthropology and biological sciences at the University of Southern California. Known for his outspoken evolutionary and atheistic beliefs, Stanford appeared on The No God Cast Podcast—a weekly program that, according to the show’s website, provides “a platform” from which atheists can “share their stories and speak their minds.” Though the podcast’s weekly audience is rather small, comments Stanford made on the September 20th episode have generated controversy.

During the program, Stanford criticized Evolution vs. God—a new documentary created by Ray Comfort that challenges evolutionary thought. In the interview, Stanford said it is best to ignore evangelical Christians like Comfort.

“The best approach to people like him and the evangelical community that might be making films like this, in general, is to just ignore them because they’re obviously preaching to the converted; they are not winning over any hearts and minds of anybody else who is not evangelical,” Stanford argued. “It’s a bit of a silly approach that they have that’s all about trying to validate their increasingly marginalized beliefs.”

Stanford went on to ridicule people who do not accept Darwinian evolution.

“If you’re not going to accept evolution,” he said, “I guess that’s your civil right, but that means you’re working on a fundamentally irrational and a kind of slightly crazy mindset.”

As previously reported, Comfort’s Evolution vs. God film generated enormous interest, even from individuals like Ken Ham and Richard Dawkins. Before the film’s mid-summer release, Comfort told Christian News Network that Evolution vs. God is effective because it shows how evolutionists struggle to provide evidence for their theory.

“Most Christian videos on the subject of evolution normally look at what evolution says and then have a creationist expert dismantle it,” Comfort explained. “That’s very effective. But what Evolution vs. God does that is unique is that we didn’t interview anyone who believed in Intelligent Design. Every person interviewed believes in evolution…and they are the ones who show that evolution is a fairy tale for grownups.”

Stanford was one of the evolutionists interviewed in Evolution vs. God. In The No God Cast Podcast, he admitted that Comfort “seems like a bright guy,” but then said even intelligent people “can close off … knowledge in certain compartments.” Stanford also remarked that people who reject evolution (like Comfort) are “intellectually dishonest,” and accused Comfort of asking misleading questions and using dishonest editing techniques in making Evolution vs. God.

“I know this will offend some people in the evangelical community who may be listening,” Stanford noted, “but [Evolution vs. God] to me is a great example of what I would call ‘Biblical porn.’ It’s a whole set of images and words that are really intended mainly to titillate and excite evangelicals. There’s actually no actual inquiry in that video into science versus creationism.”

In a September 20th post on Twitter, Stanford reiterated his statements:

“[I]n the No God podcast tonight,” he wrote, “by ‘Bible Porn’ I mean that videos promoting evangelical views with images and words are truly just like porn.”

The next day, Stanford tweeted: “I did not say there was no deceitful editing in Comfort’s video. I said his deceit was in cutting off my answers short of the full facts.”

However, Comfort countered Stanford on Twitter, saying that there truly is no evidence for Darwinian evolution.

“Why didn’t you give your ‘full facts’ on the interview?” Comfort asked. “You’d have debunked my movie in seconds. Fess up. You don’t have any.”

Since its release, Evolution vs. God has received nearly 900,000 views and has generated almost 90,000 comments on YouTube.

Michael Bresciani, a Christian author and columnist, wrote in a recent review of Evolution vs. God that the film “is one of the most power packed blows to the evolutionary model produced in this decade.” Bresciani submitted that “the indoctrinated and dyed in the wool evolutionists, in large part, resorted to degrading and nasty remarks often aimed at Ray Comfort.”

“Arguments against Comfort’s conclusions were almost non-existent because Comfort questioned only those who are Darwinists,” Bresciani continued. “They did not fare well, although they remained dignified they were unable to give a defense of something they had swallowed hook, line and sinker, with no serious thought to the other side of the argument.”

“[Evolution vs. God] is an excellent tool to open the minds of youth,” Bresciani concluded, “…and should be on the shelf of every pastor who cares about his church members and their need to know how to answer the widely accepted, but spurious and tattered theory of evolution.”

According to Comfort god created all and evolution is a lie. Well, which god did create all? Can’t be the Christian god. The Christian god comes after a long range of other creator gods. And since the bible is the best evidence against the Christian god there must be some other god. (Genesis is probably the best evidence that the Christian god doesn’t exist.) Christians had over 2,500 years to come up with any evidence/proof of their god yet failed to do so. Evolution however did all this in just over 150 years. Evolution is accepted by the majority of the Christian religion. Evolution is also accepted by the majority of scientists. Is Comfort a scientist? NO. He doesn’t even have a clue what evolution is or how it works. He’s a creationist. And we all know they don’t do science. Creationism and/or ID are pseudo-sciences. The proof for Christians is in the Faith. Hebrews 11:1.
Either you believe the Bible to be the Word of God, One God, or it ends there?
The “seculars” enjoy puffing themselves up to be intellectually superior, and insulting to those who believe in One God and Creationism. This I don’t understand.

      • Patrick van Baal

Faith is not based on evidence. So no proof. Same goes for creationism. Not supported by evidence. If you believe the bible to be the word of god and take the bible literally then yes, atheists are intellectually superior.

    • Lupe

Nope. Sorry NO PROOF for the theory of evolution. No proof at all. It is a BELIEF system. No more. It was created by people that don’t want to accept God. No worries. You have that right. If you knew ANYTHING about Christianity you would know that it doesn’t care about the theory of evolution. True Christitans, at any rate. We will give you the good news. What you do with it is up to you. Accept it. Deny it. Not our business. However, the Bible is the BEST documented book in history. Oh, I know you will want proof of God yet you are not willing to give proof for your belief. Nope, because there is no proof only belief.

      • Eric Goberman

Lupe – You don’t seem to understand the terms you are throwing about. Theory of Evolution is a working description of how the variety of life came to be on earth. It is not a belief system it is a set of facts with a description of how they fit together.

It was arrived at by all sorts of people – mostly christians who study and understand science. People who know that the only way science can operate is objectively. People who take their science and experiments and expose the to the world hoping that no one can poke holes in them. Their audience (other scienctists) find no greater pleasure than taking those experiments and results and finding everything wrong with them that they can.

You are right – christianity shouldn’t care about science at all. Christianity is about your immortal soul. Science is about your all too mortal body.

” True Christitans” – which are they ? The 80% who understand evolution and accept it ? Or the 20% who haven’t the ability to understand anything not told to them by a preacher who knows nothing of science ?

“However, the Bible is the BEST documented book in history.”

No, the bible is the least accurate history book every written. It has nothing to do with history and everything to do with theology.

Eric Goberman has perhaps even unwittingly provided poof of evolution happening in very our day, correcting all those hard nosed ignoramuses who dare question any of it’s assumptions. Are there any folks available to willing cough up some proof (without the insults)of naturalistic evolution? Seriously. That proof for present day evolution being that the former rock solid religion of Darwinism has itself evolved from it’s primitive origins.Evolution finally witnessed for all it’s “believers” to shout from the pinnacles of higher learning…..finally!

    • Eric Goberman

Daniel – The world is overflowing with proof of evolution. It’s not hard to find at all. It isn’t even difficult to recognize.

It is impossible to understand if the only response to evidence is “no, this goes against my religion therefore it can’t be true”. Religion gives no answers to questions about science and science doesn’t care whether religion agrees with it or not. Religion is against questioning anything it says – science demands that every statement be questioned and tested.

Look up Francis Collins – head of the NIH. Perhaps what he says may make sense to you.

In the meantime, I’ll keep taking antibiotics that work on new strains of bacteria and virii – those new strains are the product of evolution whether anyone likes it or not.

  • Eric Goberman

And Daniel – Darwin’s statements have been updated, it is now called “The Theory of Evolution”. Neither the former nor the latter constitute a religion. But if trying to bring science down to the level of religion makes one feel better then it’s OK. It’s dishonest but it’s OK.

Not knowing what you are opposing must make it difficult to argue against.

    “There is no soul.”
    “There is no God.”
Two ideas often put forth by one side in this debate.

“Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.”
An idea put forth by a non-Christian who is a scientist. Anybody want to tell me who?

With the recent discovery of the ancient human skull in Georgia(54 million yrs. old) and the remains of a Mosquito with blood still in the abdomen(2 million yrs. old) Science is rethinking it evolutionary methods as well as philosophy. It took science 8 years to tell the public about the 54 million yr. old skull because they could not make it fit in their square box. G*D created the earth 6 + thousand years ago, and there is so much evidence to back that fact up, it’s not even funny, but science can keep trying. I love the twisting and turning they do but the facts are still facts, and you can’t make it fit no matter how hard you try.

The story of Adam and Eve came about because of the witch craze! The church burned tens of millions of women for nothing. There was another religion around before the story of Adam and Eve. The Old Pagan Goddess worship. These women were healers. The church could not compete with the Old Pagan Goddess Worship and they knew it. History repeats itself. The church can not compete with evolution and they know it. Look up the “Burning Times of Witches” and the “Witch Craze” so you can see. The scientists have worked very hard and honestly for the information about evolution, and I respect them for it. So, evolutionists, I thank you for your honesty and good work. Keep up the good work too. The people who have made up the story of Adam and Eve want to burn atheists and evolutionists at the stake too. Evolutionists please know this. Blessed Be!
