Abortion Advocates Call for Cancellation of Duggar Family’s ’19 Kids and Counting’

DuggarsA petition calling for the cancellation of a popular reality show was recently filed after one of its ‘stars’ compared America’s abortion industry to the Holocaust.

19 Kids and Counting airs weekly on TLC, with an average viewing audience of approximately 1.5 million. The broadcast follows the lives of Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, as well as their 19 children, who range in age from 3 to 25 years. The Duggars are all unashamed Christians, and regularly speak at various events across the country.

However, remarks from Jim Bob Duggar at last month’s Values Voters Summit have now generated an outcry from abortion advocates. In his address, Duggar compared the United States’ abortion practices today with the Nazi Germany Holocaust during World War II.

“Back a few years ago,” Duggar said at the summit, “I heard Governor Huckabee speak and he was sharing about how he had taken his daughter Sarah over to one of the concentration camps where a lot of Jewish people were killed. And he said, as they were walking out of that concentration camp, … [Sarah] looked up at him and she said, ‘Daddy, why didn’t somebody do something?’”

“And, you know what?” Duggar continued. “That’s where we’re at in our nation. Do we want our children, when we’re going to tell them about how great America was, … [to] look at you and say, ‘Why didn’t somebody do something?’”

After the Values Voters Summit, Duggar reiterated his statements.

“Let me clarify,” he stated, according to the Daily Press. “We have since 1973 (when Roe v. Wade was decided) had 55 million abortions, so what we have going on is a baby holocaust.”

After the summit, abortion proponents decried Duggar’s comments, asserting that abortions should never be compared to the Holocaust. A petition was also filed on MoveOn.org, demanding the cancellation of 19 Kids and Counting. The petition’s author—identified as Tamar Fox—claims to be a “superfan” of the reality TV show, but also describes herself as “pro-choice.”

“[T]his time, [the Duggars’] right wing views have gone too far,” the petition reads. “In a recent speech at the Values Voter Summit Jim Bob Duggar compared America today to Nazi Germany. Why? Because of abortion. When asked to explain, he said that the millions of legal abortions that have occurred since Roe v. Wade was decided are an ongoing ‘baby holocaust.’”

“Let’s be clear: America today is nothing like Nazi Germany, and a woman who decides to have an abortion is not taking part in a Holocaust,” Fox’s petition argues. “Please join me in telling TLC and Discovery Media to cancel the Duggars’ show, ‘19 Kids and Counting,’ and stop rewarding people who misuse the history of the Holocaust to play politics with women’s rights.”

To date, the petition has received just over 200 signatures. Comments posted on the petition website echo similarly angry sentiments from the pro-abortion crowd.

“This show disgusts me on every possible level,” one commeter named Liz stated. “Here’s hoping that Duggar’s offensive, pig-ignorant comments constitute the last straw!”

Others condemned the Duggar family’s Christianity.

“Aside from the inherent stupidity of these types [of] shows in general, who thinks having 19 children is something to be proud of?” Brian asks. “Let me guess, these people are religious fanatics—c’mon people, it’s 2013; time to give up the silly superstitious nonsense and admit ALL religions are nothing more than ignorant ancient [expletive] with no place in today’s world.”

However, Jill Stanek with LifeNews.com argued in an article last week that the comparison between the 1940s Holocaust and modern abortion practices is tragically valid. Stanek points out that one of the definitions of “holocaust” is—according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary—“a mass slaughter of people.”

“So,” Stanek writes, “the term ‘holocaust’ can be appropriately used to describe the mass genocide of babies via abortion, and it can also be used to compare abortion to the Jewish Holocaust, although as tragic as the latter was, its death toll pales in comparison to the former.”

Others shared similar sentiments on Facebook.

“Is [abortion] not a baby Holocaust?” one commenter asked. “Only the cold technical language that depicts abortion as a mere medical procedure allows pro-abortionists to conceal the reality of what it really is.”

“I finally watched an episode [of 19 Kids and Counting] today and loved it!” another stated. “You can see the goodness and love in every single member of that family. I pray that God continues to bless them!”

Sign me up! These fools shouldn’t be advocating their ignorant propaganda to the world. The comparisons to the Holocaust are beyond disgusting and an absolute offense to the the victims and survivors.

    • Thom Dunbar III

Ignorant propaganda is when one is manipulated into believing something that isn’t true. It is an obvious fact that if a baby isn’t killed, it will continue to live and continue to grow as a living human being. Anyone who stops that process has wrongfully deprived a human being of life – which is the definition of murder. So what is the difference between the Nazi Holocaust and the Infant Holocaust? Nothing – ignorance of truth, propagated by governments thru socialist thinking mandated in government (aka public) schools. The Nazis did it in the past; the US and other governments are doing it now.

      • James J. Grimes

        Very well said, Thom.

      • Annie

Agreed. Thank you Thom for saying it so well

    • Mark

TRUTH of abortion hurt Carol. What is abortion if a baby human is not there?

    • PDBHDK

So you want the Duggars censored because you don’t agree with a comment that seems to be taken out of context? Abortion and the Holocast are similar. Both are senseless killing. Hitler didn’t value life, or other people’s opinions, the abortion advocates don’t value life or other people’s opinions. It sickens me that people use abortion as birth control when there are other options for contraception. Rape and incest is a grey area for me, but if a woman doesn’t want to have a baby, both parties need to take steps to not get pregnant.

  • Jon

I really just wish that The Duggars would never compare The Holocaust to Abortion, as a Jew, it’s incredibly insulting and offensive. I really just wish they’d use better words and choose them wisely before they go that far, so not ok.

    • OliveBranch

Speak for yourself. The parallel is clear and true. Why would you be offended by truth. If you read the definition of Holocaust the comparison is spot on? 50 Million deaths doesn’t offend you? Abortion is what is offensive to practicing Jews. You seem more like a progressive plant as I have talked with many Jewish friends and family members concerning abortion and it is a frequent comparison. BOTH Holocausts are offensive to the Jews I know and to myself but the Duggars are NOT.

    • Stefanie

Why – he’s right in both case – why didn’t/doesn’t someone do something!

    • George Tasker

Let me get this straight. As a Jew you find it offensive to talk about the Jewish Holocaust of six million deaths but it’s OK for over fifty million gentiles to be slaughtered at birth.

It sounds to me as though you regard Gentiles as being less than human. You wouldn’t be a secret recruiter for Nazi Skinheads by chance would you?

    • Mark

Well Jon, Jews too are somewhat offensive by attacking Christian freedom in the USA and disregarding the humanity of the pre-born baby human. Maybe the reason why Israel has a Jewish population shortage is because Jews there are aborting their future while the Palestinian population is exploding.

Abortion is as offensive as it is evil just like the Holocaust was. BTW, within that Holocaust, Jews were not the only people massacred by the Nazis.

  • Lorral

I see no intelligent reason why there is a difference between the murder of 6,000,000 Jewish people and the murder of 55,000,000 or more babies. Murder is the deliberate, willful taking of another’s life, whether it’s through the Holocaust, or whether it’s through abortion. God told us in the Ten Commandments, “Thou shalt not murder” We as a nation have lost our way in what we were commanded by our Creator, and have become selfish to the extent that we no longer have love in our hearts for others. We fail to realize that regardless of our beliefs, we will still be judged for our sins. You cannot wish away a divine creator no matter how hard you try. God gave us these commandments for a reason, so when we go out and have sex outside of marriage, or commit adultery, you end up with unwanted children. Ultimately it’s the children that pay the price. We then destroy the fruit of our sins. I hope and pray that the Duggar’s are allowed to continue to spread a bit of life into this dying world.

  • Patty

Does he think nobody had an abortion before 1973? They were illegal but they still happened.

    • Jennifer

No, he doesn’t think that at all. We just don’t know the statistics b/c it was done in secret. Only when the mothers were harmed or died in the process were people made aware of it in a case by case basis. It was a shameful act people were not proud to boast about or discuss in public. Only in this sick world are there people who are proDEATH and force the law to bend to their sinful will. It makes me nuts to know there are people who are still ignorant about abortion, and the facts surrounding it. Killing babies is big business. I wish those leaving stupid comments would do some research on this rather than attack others who actually have a clue about this subject! No matter how you try to justify it, dance around the facts, or out right deny it. 55 million children (there are more undocumented btw) were murdered! Using abortion as a form of birth control is morally wrong, no matter what your religious beliefs are. Period.

If you disagree with the Duggar family’s position, I would encourage you to check out http://www.180movie.com. It might just change your mind…if you are an open-minded person.

  • Joni Ward

keep the show going…God is a one and only true God… the duggars are right.

  • William S. Sutherland

Since the founder of Planned Parenthood, Margaret Sanger, went to Germany to study the Nazi’s eugenics program, I would say comparing abortion to the Holocaust is very appropriate. A planned abortion is premeditated murder! The murder of over 55 million babies is a Holocaust that rivals the murders by Hitler, Stalin, and Mao! As God says in His Word, “All those who hate me love death.”

  • clarice suko

I totally agree with the Duggars in all they do. Yes, abortion is definitely a holocause on our most innocent of citizens. This family is very brave to be so outspoken in these grave times. May God bless them.

WE Must Stand Up For That Child It Must Have A Life. YHou Say Its A Women Right But! What Is The Right Of That Child! That Must Have A Life Of You LOve To Sin You Must Save That Child Frist Not Your Sinful Life Ways And Let That Child Live Now

  • John

The Duggar family shows there’s no need to have abortion

  • Mark

I think the TRUTH of abortion hurts those that support baby killing. Too bad they feel pain of truth but don’t feel the pain of butchering a pre-born baby human.

I wouldn’t be here if my mother’s biological mother chose abortion. I won’t allow one person to tell my family that our lives don’t matter. The youtube video above is a song I wrote called: I Chose You about my mother’s adoption, but also the fact that God chose us first. I support the Duggars. God Bless!

  • Janet larr

I find it offensive that there are people who don’t think that 55 million murders is a big deal! Hmmm… Maybe I’ll start a petition to remove those people who feel that way from the internet! You know, a petition to restrict their freedom of free speech, which we all know only applies unless someone disagrees with you…. I mean, really? Bottom line, there are millions who believe abortion is murder and when you have 55 million murders, those numbers are right up there with the holocaust. Both groups, Jews and unborn babies, were completely innocent and neither deserved what large parts of humanity have given them. So, if you want your beliefs to be heard, you better back of theirs. Period. Quit whining about being offended-people are offended (sometimes, they are even offended by you, believe it or not) every single day. If we all used or signed petitions against everything that offended us, nobody would ever be allowed to speak!!!!

    • Kristen

      Amen!

  • Pami

Amen to the Duggers keep going the way you are! Peace God be with you all!

  • Rebecca Cooper

I agree with Mr. Vulgar. Abortion is wrong

  • Louise

Forcing someone to stay pregnant is shockingly wrong. I had an abortion at 13 because, well, I was 13 for one thing and I was raped. It sickens me to think that there are people out there in the world who think that I’m a monster for having an abortion. I have rights too, you know. Abortion will never, ever be illegal. So shut up and stop forcing your beliefs onto others. I had my daughter at 17 and I can’t even begin to imagine what it would have been like to be pregnant and give birth at 13. My abortion caused me no mental anguish but the pregnancy sure as hell did.

  • Nicolette Christensen

Louise, I truly do not believe that the Duggar’s or anyone else believe that any 13 year old child should be or stay pregnant. I personally have a pro- life license plate on my car, however I 100% support and agree with you being allowed an abortion at 13 years old due to a rape and i am so truly sorry that happened to you. 🙁 I also think a lot of people fail to consider the time in pregnancy that some abortions happen and the reason, i.e. rape in this case. While I will always claim to be pro-life, I also stand behind you 110% and I wish you the best in life and fully support the surely difficult decision you were forced to make.
