Hillsong’s Brian Houston Won’t Give Position on Same-Sex ‘Marriage’: ‘We’re on the Journey With It’

HoustonNEW YORK CITY — The senior pastor of the global Hillsong Church declined to give a concrete answer as to whether or not those who lead his American congregations may officiate at same-sex “weddings” as he was speaking at a recent press conference that included questions about homosexuality, finances and his late father’s alleged sexual abuse of a minor.

“You brought up the subject of same-sex marriage, and I wasn’t sure what you were saying,” reporter Michael Paulson of the New York Times asked Brian Houston of Hillsong Australia at the media event in New York City. “You’re now operating in New York and California where same sex marriage is legal. Can your pastors preside at same-sex marriages? ”

Houston’s son Joel co-pastors Hillsong New York, and his son Ben leads Hillsong Los Angeles.

“It can be challenging for churches to stay relevant because many mainstream churches upheld what they would believe is the long established view of what the Bible says about homosexuality,” he replied. “But the world has changed around and about them.”

“[T]o me, the world we live in, whether we like it or not, is changing around and about us. Homosexual marriage is legal in [New York City] and will be probably in most Western world countries within a short time,” the 60-year-old minister continued. “So the world’s changing and we want to stay relevant as a church. So that’s a vexing thing. You think, ‘How do we not become a pariah?'”

Houston, whose congregation has international offshoots in the United Kingdom, Russia, France, South Africa and Germany, said that he didn’t want young people to feel ostracized if they have attractions to those of the same sex.

“[Youth], sadly, often times grow up to hate the Church because they feel that the Church rejected them,” he stated.

The Hillsong leader, who speaks to an estimated 30,000 congregants a week, said that he struggles with juggling the changing world and the presence of homosexual youth in the Church with what the Scriptures declare about the matter.

“[I]t would be much easier if you could feel like all of those three just easily lined up. But they don’t necessarily,” Houston said. “And that’s what Carl [Lentz] always says for us—it’s a conversation.”

He explained that he could therefore not give a “yes or no” answer in response to Paulson’s question.

“For us, it’s easy to reduce what you think about homosexuality to just a public statement. And that would keep a lot of people happy,” Houston stated. “But we feel at this point it is an ongoing conversation, that the real issues in people’s lives are too important for us to just reduce it down to a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer in a media outlet. So we’re on the journey with it, aren’t we?”

The aforementioned Carl Lentz, who leads Hillsong New York City with Houston’s son, Joel, also made headlines earlier this year when some expressed concern that he likewise would not provide his position on the issue of homosexuality.

“Jesus was in the thick of an era where homosexuality, just like it is today, was widely prevalent,” Lentz told CNN. “And I’m still waiting for someone to show me the quote where Jesus addressed it on the record in front of people. You won’t find it because he never did.”

“It’s not our place to tell anyone how they should live,” his wife, Laura, added. “That’s their journey.”

What a coward. Shameful that he is trying to straddle political correctness and scripture at the same time.

ZIGGY: THIS is what the new age church is doing. I would offer this, WHAT WOULD JESUS DO? Would he say, sure it’s fine, don’t worry about, or something else? They say that JESUS is GOD (was in the flesh). Then GOD said that it was wrong, was not meant to be that way and was an abomination. He didn’t approve then, so when did He change His mind? He said, I am the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. So, if He doesn’t change then what He said has apparently not changed either. It’s man that wants to change things b/c we don’t like what GOD has offered, or commanded of us. We want to break His rules and do it our way, which will have consequences in the end.

They care more about being relevant and ostracizing someone than they do about declaring the truth of God’s word that will set the sinner free. Are they still going to care about the feelings of these people when they’re in hell suffering for all eternity because they were misled? God’s word brings rebuke, correction, training & discipline. Where does it say in the word that Jesus ever changed his mind about a topic because it might hurt someone’s feelings or make them feel ostracized? The Bible is the #1 purchased and read book in the world and in it ‘God said’ homosexuality is a sin. I would say that that was pretty much declaring it publicly. it is sad that pastors we used to look up to are now falling for the lies of Satan & leading others into the abyss of doctrinal compromise & chaos.

    • But wait, God’s Word brings hatred toward those that are different. This includes and is not limited to: Homosexuality, people who get divorced, unruly, sex workers, women, people of different religions and the list goes on. So tell me, is that a God that you want to believe in?

And then while we’re at it, let’s define the words homosexuality and Sodomite. You read all about the definition of both words and more on this subject at http://www.gaychurch.org/homosexuality-and-the-bible/the-bible-christianity-and-homosexuality/

      • Mary Taylor

It is a God I want to believe in. My God does not change His laws to suit sinful humanity. All that you mentioned are sins and willful sins, I might add. If God changed like man does, I could never believe in or trust Him.

        • wandakate

MARY TAYLOR: NO, GOD does not change ever. His laws didn’t change. He only got rid of all those useless Jewish laws that they came up with back then, all the Ceremonial laws and the Sacrificial laws, but the Moral Laws of GOD are still binding. Our 10 Commandments are binding, they are not obsolete.
We are to trust GOD and not man, as man will fail us, however, GOD will “NEVER” fail us. He is free to believe as he chooses and I hope he realizes that he is sealing his own fate.

Flagged your post, nothing personal, but you have no business promoting a gay website on a Christian blog, that is very unethical.

      • Horatio Socks

God’s word brings hatred because you want to do your own thing. His Word says that will happen and it has throughout time and will until Christ comes again. Those who live in darkness hate the word. The world has hated me, and they will hate you. But, love those who hate you for My sake.

THOMAS LOPEZ: You decide as it is your free choice. Heaven or Hell it’s really up to you. Millions will be in Hell so if you chose to join them that is your prerogative. As for me and my house we will serve the LORD. He should have know what was best since He was the ones that started the whole world and all the people here in.

    • wandakate

CARRIE KAHLE: THAT is all true however we were warned in scripture that it would be just prior to JESUS return this very way. Like in the days of Noah…And pastors are preaching the “feel good gospel” to sooth those itching ears. People don’t want the truth (some do perhaps, most don’t), no, they want what their itching ears want to hear. They are willing to go along with whatever is socially and politically correct, ignoring the scriptures about this topic. Pastors are responsible for the flock and leading them astray. The people are deceived and don’t even realize it on many topics, not just this one.

  • MC

All these liberal churches care about is not offending anyone so they can keep the money rolling in. These wolves do the most damage to people’s faith and salvation. This “church” is toast.

    • wandakate

MC: I will have to agree for the most part. Not all churches but most of them. Church now has unfortunately turned into nothing but a business and a big social club or gossiping and networking…Even though I am a Christian I don’t attend any church. It’s not religion that we need, it’s a believe in, and a trust in JESUS. We must have faith in JESUS and not some pastor or some congregation and building.

I believe “homosexual marriage” is the “abomination that causes desolation” mentioned in the books of Daniel, Matthew, Mark, and Luke … the unholy thing in the holy place.

      • Rev Donald Spitz

Don’t know, but have no problem you believing it.

        • wandakate

REV DONALD SPITZ: Excuse me…But, you said, “don’t know”…IF you are a pastor then why don’t you know and why are you not able to explain it to people that are deceived or confused?

      • I believe that the “abomination that causes desolation” is something is so widely used that it truly makes the church itself look hypocritical. Ouch!

      • Roo

Just a friendly correction: The phrase “abomination that causes desolation” is attributed to the Antichrist (Anointed One, the Prince) when he puts up his image in the newly rebuilt temple in Jerusalem. Actually all of what is happening in our world right now is just screaming to the world and the church to WAKE UP and LOOK UP for our redemption is SO NEAR! But… that’s a t o t a l l y different topic. (Dan. 9:27, Mark 13)

But what you mention about the topic being “unholy” — yes, it absolutely is! It’s right here in 1 Cor. 6:9-10
“Do you not know that the unrighteous and the wrongdoers will not inherit or have any share in the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived (misled): neither the impure and immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor those who participate in homosexuality,
10 Nor cheats (swindlers and thieves), nor greedy graspers, nor drunkards, nor foulmouthed revilers and slanderers, nor extortioners and robbers will inherit or have any share in the kingdom of God.”

      • wandakate

MARYWATERTON: The unholy thing in the holy place is going to be the Man of Sin (the Antichrist). He’s going to stand there and proclaim himself as god. They are going to build an image of the beast and all people will be forced to worship the beast. All the world followed the beast.

WILLIAM MAZEO: Oh Satan loves it. He’s telling the demons to see what is going on and keep up the good work. They are to go out and infiltrate every single church that they can get into, bar none. They are to corrupt the pastor who in turn will corrupt the people and all of them will be like the blind leading the blind and will all fall into the pit. They are all going to be deceived b/c Satan is the god of this world and he is a powerful spiritual being who came for the simple task of killing, stealing and destroying Christians. He is trying to do everything in his power to ruin the church and he knows that his time is short so he’s busy 24/7 will his evil schemes. Looks what’s happening in Washington with the government. Look at the school shooting and the shooting in California of the police officers and the shooting up at the Parliament in Canada and yes the axe chopping Muslim in NYC at the subway station who hit the officer in the head with an axe and hit the other officer with it in his arm as he raised his hand to shoot. Another officer came on the scene and shot the Muslim. OKAY, so that is just news from the past 2 days, that doesn’t include any Ebola issues or any Isis issues or crime in Ferguson. Is this the same church group that the band Hillsong came from? They’ve made some of the best praise and worship music ever. JESUS warned us of many things. We will go through a time of testing…This is what all of this is about. We as Christians are now being tested by GOD to see where we stand. Will we fold like this pastor and complimise our values or will we stand strong and defend the faith? Our moral ground is being tested. We must not fall by the wayside and we will if we’re not careful. Remember he said that the elect would be deceived if at all possible. We are going to be here to be tried, tested, sanctified and purified. We must “go thru the fire” of purification before we enter into the Kingdom of GOD. There is no escape route.

        • Else

yes, only by His grace. I don’t think any of us can remain standing if not for that! blessings!!

    • You know, the Bible does ban many things. Such
as wearing clothes made out of two different types of fabric. Sowing
two different types of seeds in the same plot. Eating fat like that
found on bacon and ham. Touching an unclean animal. Carelessly making an
oath. Growing a beard. Tearing your clothes. Eating an animal which
doesn’t both chew cud and has a divided hoof. Eating – or touching the
carcass of – any seafood without fins or scales. Eating any animal which
walks on all four and has paws. Going to church within 66 days after
giving birth to a girl. Going to church within 33 days after giving
birth to a boy. Having sex with a woman during her period. Picking up
grapes that have fallen in your vineyard. Lying. Stealing.
Cross-breeding animals. Eating fruit from a tree within four years of
planting it. Trimming your beard, which is odd since it just told you
not to grow one. Cutting your hair at the sides. Getting tattoos. Not
standing up immediately in the presence of the elderly. Working on the
Sabbath. Oh, and I work on Sunday too just like you.

I guess we are just going to forget about all that huh? Let’s just
pick and choose what we already believe from the bible, and let it fuel
our ignorant hatred of people who are born a certain way. Hell, I might
start hating blacks and asians. Just because I feel like GOD told me to.
      Sounds about right to me.

      • Mary Taylor

Those things were rules and laws to live by before Jesus died on the Cross. This was to show us how impossible it would be to live a sin free life. Now we live by faith and under the righteousness of Christ. The moral laws have not changed. Sin is sin.

        • They’re from the same exact chapters that ban homosexuality. Sounds a bit like you’re picking and choosing verses to suit your own fancy.

          • wandakate

TUX: Exactly, but now he knows more than he did b/c I just wrote him, so read what I told him. Hopefully he will read it and educate himself of what was and what still is. The MORAL LAWS of GOD still apply even though most Christians don’t honor them. None of them went away (ALL 10) of them are still as relevant as they were when GOD wrote them on two tablets of stone and they were placed inside the Ark of the Covenant.

          • wandakate

THOMAS LOPEZ: Marriage started Thomas in the garden of Eden in Genesis. GOD created one man and one woman to be together to multiply. He did not create Adam and Steve to lust over one another and not multiply. BIG difference hun?

          • Yes I am aware of the Genesis account which is used as the primary argument for traditional marriage. But the argument lacks for better reasons.

This is a story about Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve!! We’ve all
probably heard that somewhere. The fact is, it was Adam and Eve. In The Good Book, Gomes writes the following pertaining to the creation narrative:

“…the authors of Genesis were intent upon answering the question
‘Where do we come from?’ Then, as now, the only plausible answer is from the union of a man and a woman…The creation story in Genesis does not pretend to be a history of anthropology or of every social relationship. It does not mention friendship, for example, and yet we do not assume that friendship is condemned or abnormal. It does not mention the singlestate, and yet we know that singleness is not condemned, and that in certain religious circumstances it is held in very high esteem” (pages 49-50).

In other words, Adam and Eve is the only relationship for this
specific account that makes sense. It is a story about creation, and
only a procreative (i.e. hetero-sexual) relationship would be
appropriate for this particular story. If someone, in spite of this,
were to base his or her opinion of homosexuality on the Creation story alone, their stance would not only be out of context, but also based on a weak argument.

That leaves us with two Leviticus laws: Leviticus 18:22 & parallel verse 20:13.

Let us look at a few different translations of Leviticus 18:22…

KJV: “Thou shalt not lie with a man as with a woman; it is an abomination.”

NIV: “Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable.”

Living Bible: “Homosexuality is absolutely forbidden, for it is an enormous sin.”

The questions we should ask are, “What does this really say, and what is the context of this law?” Leviticus is the book of the law. It
contains everything from commandments for men not to shave the edges of their beards; orders not to have intercourse during menstruation; not toharvest different crops in the same field; as well as strict dietary laws. The Holiness Code, as it is called, was written to distinguish theHebrews, morally and ritually, from the Babylonians and Canaanites. They are often referred to as the purity laws. Now let us look at what the New Testament says about the law:

“Likewise, my brethren, you have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead in order that we may bear fruit for God. While we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, were at work in our members to bear fruit for death. But now we are discharged from the law, dead to that which held us captive, so that we serve not under the old written code but in the new life of the Spirit” (RSV Romans 7:4-6).

“Now before faith came, we were confined under the law, kept under
restraint until faith should be revealed. So that the law was our
custodian until Christ came, that we might be justified by faith. But
now that faith has come, we are no longer under a custodian [i.e. The Law]. For in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith” (RSV Galatians 3:23-26).

Other New Testament Scriptures on the Law include: 2 Corinthians 3:6; Colossians 2:13-15; Hebrews 8:8-13, Romans 10:1-4.

If we are “not under the law” does that mean we can lie, cheat, steal, etc.? In Romans 6:15 Paul answers this question himself, “By no means!” Didn’t Christ himself in Matthew 5:17 say that he came not to abolish the law, but to fulfill it? So what is the law? Jesus was once asked, “Rabbi, which is the greatest commandment in the law?” Jesus replied, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets.” (RSV Matthew 22:36-40)

Paul would later echo this idea in Romans as he wrote “Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. The commandments, ‘You shall not commit adultery, You shall not kill, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,’ and any other commandment, are summed up in this sentence, ‘You
shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.” (RSV Romans 13:8-10)

Christian tradition has distinguished Old Testament laws that pertain to “purity” and those that pertain to “morality,” the latter of which still apply. If love is the true fulfillment of the law, then for
Christians should not love be the measuring stick for determining by
which laws we are to abide (i.e. which are “moral laws”)?

Now let’s look back at the verse. Literally translated from Hebrew Leviticus 18:22 reads: “And with a male you shall not lay lyings of a woman.”

First of all “lay lyings” has no clear interpretation. The only way
of making sense of this is to insert something to produce a smoother, more commonsense English translation. For example, one can insert “as the” or “in the” after the first lay as showed below:

“And with a male you shall not lay [as the] lyings of a woman.”

“And with a male you shall not lay [in the] lyings of a woman.”

Even if we accept the NIV or KJV translations, (KJV: “Thou shalt not
lie with a man as with a woman; it is an abomination.”) we still must
understand the historical context of how a man laid with a women, for this is the qualifier of the phrase. Rabbi Arthur Waskow explains, “The whole structure of sexuality in the Torah assumes a dominant male and a subordinate female.” 2 The status of women in that time was much lower than that of men, and women were even considered property of the men. This belief regarding gender relations is rejected by most of the Christian church today, but in order to make sense of this specific Jewish law we must keep in mind this context in which it was written. We simply cannot ignore the second half of the phrase, “as with a woman” as most interpretations tend to do.

For one of the men in the sexual encounter to be treated as one would treat a woman, the man would have been taking a lower status. To do so would have been reducing him to property and in effect defiling the image of God, which man was considered. To fully understand this law, wemust consider the historical context in which it was written.

The Old Testament was initially a part of the Hebrew Scriptures of
the Jewish people. The Septuagint was an ancient translation of the Old Testament from its original Hebrew into Greek. It was the “version” of the Old Testament that the New Testament writers quoted from when they cited Old Testament scriptures. The Hebrew word in this specific law we are looking at that was translated into English as “abomination” was translated in the Septuagint into the Greek word bdelugma. A quick search through a lexicon for the word bdelugma brings up the following definition:

a foul thing, a detestable thing

of idols and things pertaining to idolatry

This seems to point to the idea that this specific law has more to do
with a matter of ritual purity and with the Hebrews not being like the
idolatrous Babylonians or Canaanites. As we see, this law isn’t as
simple as it appears. First of all we have a very unclear law (“And with a male you shall not lay lyings of a woman.”). Second of all, we must consider the historical context of how men treated women in sexual encounters. Thirdly, as revealed through Christ, the fulfillment of the law is truly love. Rape, stealing, hating, etc. are immoral because they are not in line with the Law of Love, which Christ frames so perfectly when questioned about the law. Is a committed homosexual relationship in violation of this law? We could become like the Pharisees and Sadduceestrying to pick apart this law forever, but if we look closely, Christ’slife truly reveals the Spirit of the Law. Surely this is what Paul meant when he wrote, “But now we are discharged from the law, dead to that which held us captive, so that we serve not under the old written code but in the new life of the Spirit” (RSV Romans 7:4-6).

        • wandakate

MARY TAYLOR: I just wrote all that I wrote before I saw what you wrote, so we are saying the same thing. Mine is just slightly more detailed than yours but the meaning is the same. All the common laws of the time, but “ONLY” the Moral Laws of GOD still apply. Although GOD did know what foods were clean and unclean and if we wanted to be more healthy and free of most of our ailments we would be wise to avoid pork and scavenger types of foods, but otherwise you are correct. We live by faith, yes, but remember that it says, We are saved by grace, BUT we will be judged by our works. So I believe that once we are saved, our faith will be manifested by our good deeds/works. FAITH WITHOUT WORKS IS DEAD, according to James.

Nice cut-n-paste from a gay website. You ever even seen a Bible? I think not.

        • Of course I’ve read the Bible. I’m a former pastor of a multi-campus church in Nashville. But I do research unlike some of my fellow pastors do and I can attest that they are wrong about their beliefs when it comes to homosexuality and I have told them and many of those pastors now support my same beliefs.

          • Tash E

            troll! Go away!

          • wandakate

THOMAS LOPEZ: Then what is that belief…I only support a man marrying a woman. Two men and two women are “NEVER” going to be married in GOD’s eyes. We may call it marriage but it’s only a union…nothing more, not possible. but nonetheless what do you think about it, you must agree that it’s okay.

      • Tash E

all that you say can ONLY convince yourself, cause you will NEVER convince believers in Christ that He intended and created us for same sex relationships. Call a spade a spade mate, it is sin weather you like it or not. You look like a troll btw with all your comments.

        • wandakate

TASH E: Nothing wrong with lots of comments if you know what you’re talking about and have some information that may help someone like what I wrote to Thomas, or if you can add something to the topic that is relevant, then comments are good.

      • wandakate

Things are confusing until you know the truth so the truth can set you free. There were many laws, probably dozens of them in that day when JESUS walked the earth. They were all laws that were a shadow of things to come. JESUS was the sacrificial Lamb who came to take away the sins of the world. Since Jesus death of the cross they were not commanded to obey all those unnecessary laws anymore. They were part of the old Mosaic laws. The sacrificial laws, the ceremonial laws the common laws and the dietary laws were done away with at the cross. ONLY the MORAL LAWS now apply and they are the 10 Commandments. So, yes that Sabbath Day was the 4th one so it does apply just as the other 9 apply. Do we think we can murder or steal or commit adultery, why of course not. They all apply, they are relevant for today, they are by no means obsolete, so don’t be deceived.
GOD said he never changes and JESUS came to set the captives free, free of slavery, free of ridiculous rules and laws that they didn’t need and to set us all free in the word of GOD. When we know the facts of how these things happen then maybe we will know what we are to do and not do.

      • Juergen Bertram

Thomas Lopez, you’re quoting the Bible like 2Pet.3:16, untaught and unstable !!

  • Mark

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; – 2 Timothy 4:3

  • Melody Rae

Wow you will not find me listening to this man ever again, you are seeing a wolf in a sheeps skin, if the youth are leaving the church is because they do not want any one to tell them how to live, same thing when they leave there parents home.

  • BarkingDawg

So in other words, they are working towards accepting same sex marriage.

    • Gary

      Yes, they are.

    • Oshtur

Doesn’t matter. Nothing will make gays feel good about themselves.

  • So the world’s changing and we want to stay relevant as a church? Were on a journey with it?

Gee let’s see what the WORD OF GOD THE HEAD OF HIS CHURCH SAYS

    1 Corinthians 6:9

Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of
God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor
    adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals…

    1 John 2:15

[ Do Not Love the World ] Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

Sounds like the WORD is pretty clear about it. I judge Houston a false teacher.

    2 Peter 2
But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers
among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying
the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.
And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way
of truth shall be evil spoken of. And through covetousness shall they
with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long
time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not. …

Praise the Lord for all the cash I’ve got…

  • Ken Tidball

This is a clear rejection by Hillsong of the authority of the Word of God over the Church. The same Holy Spririt that indwelt Jesus lived inside these men who spoke and their words were written down in the Bible as a guide to future generations. With God there is no change, not even a shadow of turning. He is a God of holiness as well as love. Hillsong is trying to be relevant to today’s moral culture, in direct opposition to Romans 12: 1&2 and in opposition to how the Churc has viewed this down through history. They are polluting the message and endangering the spiritual lives of others. Love is telling someone, yes you are in quicksand and it will kill you but we will show you and help you to get out of it. Hillsong is bending to the gay influence in society and it is an evil spirit attempting to water down the Gospel and destroy its influence in an evil world.

    • wandakate

KEN TIDBALL: You mentioned quicksand. Love is telling someone, yes you are in it and it will just sink you in and you won’t be able to get out. That is how Satan does his evil…he sinks you in so low that you can’t get out again.
Pastors should reach down and say come out, we got you and then take it from there. Explain their sins and make sure you follow through and get them on the right track, otherwise they will be spending their eternity in the pits of hell.

      “Cross fire.” I like that.

  • Rev Donald Spitz

Unbelievable. Maybe they never read James 4:4… know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

    • wandakate

REV. DONALD SPITZ: What do the saved and the unsaved have in common, nothing, nothing at all…We don’t belong in the evil doings of this world. Evil everything, even the holidays that we celebrate are from pagan origins…Satan is powerful, yes, we see that now with the way things are progressing but what is in me is stronger than what is in the world. We are to be In this world, but not off this world. If we love this world, then the love of the FATHER is not in us.

  • Although most citizens realize that the granting of equal rights to gay citizens is a legal, constitutional, and above all.. secular issue; some people who apparently think that we live in a theocracy don’t… So, I’d like to point out that the following passages are a reoccurring theme in the teachings of Jesus that so many self-professed ‘Christians’ seem to completely be unaware of in their zeal to condemn all the courts for their almost unanimous rulings on this issue, in their zeal to deny marriage to gay people, and in their zeal of condemning and wanting to treat gay people like 2nd class citizens (such as businesses open to the public being able to refuse service to someone over how they were born, or who they love), or worse:

James 4:11-12 – Do not speak evil against one another, brothers. The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor?

Luke 6:37 – Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.

Matthew 7 – Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye?

1 Peter 4:8 – Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.”

1 John 4:20 – If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.

John 13:34-35 – A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Matthew 22:36-39 – “Teacher,” he asked, “which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and the most important commandment. The second most important commandment is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as you love yourself.’

    • Mary Taylor

Interesting. How would you explain Ephesians 5:3-9 ?

      • That is interesting. Joining in love and in spiritual union together such as Jonathan and David did, is not ‘sexual immorality’ as mentioned in Ephesians. How would you explain 1 Corinthians 14:34, Mary?

        • KenS

For one, she is not in the church right now is she? Secondly, this is referring to women being pastors of the church which is forbidden. They can be Sunday school teachers to children and other women.

          • 1 Timothy 2:11- “A woman should learn in quietness and full submission.” 1 Corinthians 14:34 -“Let your women be silent in the assemblies, for they are not allowed to speak, but to be in subjection, just as The Written Law also says.” 1 Corinthians 11:5 -“But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head–it is the same as having her head shaved.” 1 Timothy 2:12- “Do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet.”

Ken, I was merely asking her to explain these discriminatory types of passages towards women. I’m curious if she agrees with them… please, let ‘her’ answer the question as a woman.. if she’s honest enough to.

    • Oshtur

Lol! I’m actually a heterosexual female, but the fact that you assume only gay people fight for equal rights demonstrates how close minded you are. Also, many straight people engage in anal sex. It isn’t just a “gay” activity.

Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, today and forever. The Bible has never changed on moral issues, only man has changed to suit his own evil desires.

    • wandakate

MARY TAYLOR: Talk to people about the 10 Commandments and see where they gets you. They are obsolete now, not relevant for today’s new age…They were “done away with at the cross”. They are only guidelines, but we don’t have to obey them anymore…Ask Christians if they “ALL” apply and chances are they will tell you sure they do…Then ask them if they strive to “obey” them, and see what they say then. Just as you said, man has changed them to suit his own needs. If one doesn’t apply then just get rid of it.

  • You know, the Bible does ban many other things too. Such as wearing clothes made out of two different types of fabric. Sowing two different types of seeds in the same plot. Eating fat like that found on bacon and ham. Touching an unclean animal. Carelessly making an oath. Growing a beard. Tearing your clothes. Eating an animal which doesn’t both chew cud and has a divided hoof. Eating – or touching the carcass of – any seafood without fins or scales. Eating any animal which walks on all four and has paws. Going to church within 66 days after giving birth to a girl. Going to church within 33 days after giving birth to a boy. Having sex with a woman during her period. Picking up grapes that have fallen in your vineyard. Lying. Stealing. Cross-breeding animals. Eating fruit from a tree within four years of planting it. Trimming your beard, which is odd since it just told you not to grow one. Cutting your hair at the sides. Getting tattoos. Not standing up immediately in the presence of the elderly. Working on the Sabbath. Oh, and I work on Sunday too just like you.

But I guess we are just going to forget about all that huh? Let’s just pick and choose what we already believe from the bible, and let it fuel our ignorant hatred of people who are born a certain way. Hell, I might start hating blacks and asians. Just because I feel like GOD told me to. Sounds about right to me.

  • It’s not the job of a Christian to be popular.

    • wandakate

PEACE: Scripture does tell us that we will not be popular. We are a peculiar people according to GOD. We know His voice and He knows who we are. We stand for the truth and not the false teaching of this evil world. If they persecuted me they will persecute you, JESUS said that. We may be persecuted and martyred for our faith as we were warned, but keep the faith and we will receive our crowns of righteousness.

  • Alex Soderberg

The “relevant” churches have been declining in membership for 50 years now, so this is not a path to growth but to decline. Ask the Episcopalians and United Church of Christ how their pro-gay policy has increased their numbers – huge losses.

  • Rev Donald Spitz

Hillsong has caved in to the sodomites. They should know homosexuality should be criminalized. Homosexuality is a crime
against God and against the Holy Bible. After reading this story I know why God

Leviticus 20:13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of
them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their
    blood shall be upon them.

    Romans 1:24
Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own
hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: :26 For this cause God
gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural
use into that which is against nature: :27 And likewise also the men, leaving
the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with
men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence
of their error which was meet.

    • wandakate

REV. DONALD SPITZ: I’m surprised you didn’t know before you read this story. I knew it was true when I first read it. He wrote it and said it b/c he did not create man and woman to lust over one another. He created them to create and replenish the earth. He wanted His creation to grow. If he would have created man and another man nothing would have happened or woman and another woman nothing still would happen…GOD was wise, and He knew what He was doing.

  • T C

Saw this coming when I read about how they removed “homosexuality” from their college manual as being a sin. Shame on him, but he is just showing the fruit that he bears. Matt 7:8 “A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.”.

God said a MAN SHALL NOT LAY WITH A MAN AS HE DOES WITH A WOMEN NOR SHALL A WOMEN LAY WITH A WOMEN AS SHE DOES WITH A MAN NOR SHALL MAN NOR WOMEN LAY WITH A BEAST FOR IT IS A ABOMANATION UNTO GOD. I wonder if Hillsong is on “a journey” with other matrimonial distortions as well? Perhaps Houston would like to perform a ceremony for polygamists, or how about a throuple? After all, once you are prepared to say marriage is no longer an exclusive life-long covenant commitment only between a man and woman, then you can’t insist that it must be restricted between only two people. Such is the terminus of the relativist’s creed.

Here’s an example Pastor Houston: The story of the Samaratan woman at the well. Jesus DID confront her sin, called it out, in love and told her “Your sins are forgiven”, and then commanded her to “Go and sin no more”. The example is about a sinful lifestyle.

    Plain and simple.

Its amazing to me that David Wilkerson’s prophetic word in “Set the Trumpet to Thy Mouth” is coming to pass word for word these days, written over 20 years ago. And his message, “The Gospel of Accommodation” is absolutely what you are preaching, if you are so gray in these areas of your doctrine. (Remember 1 Cor. 6:9)

My heart is grieved. I pray your heart hears the true Word of the Lord in these matters, because I have loved the anointed music from Hillsong Australia. And this news breaks my heart that you could be so wishy-washy, sitting on the fence. I pray for you to be strong, be vigilant in these matters (1 Peter 5:8).

You are responsible in the end for how you guided your flock (including those who follow into marriage because of your decision).

  • All I’m hearing is that Pastor Brian Houston of Hillsong won’t give a concrete answer of his churches position of LGBT issues. That does not mean that he is for it or against it. So why are we saying that he supports it? I think some of you need to rethink some of your answers. Even if he does support the LGBT community, what difference does that actually make? He is a pastor and perhaps he may know something that you don’t. Maybe he’s done some research that you haven’t. But all I hear is that he is remaining neutral which I think is a fantastic way for him to say, “Please drop the subject, I don’t want to talk about it at this time.”

  • Horatio Socks

weak, he is scared to be criticized for the Gospel, he is in the wrong business. And Carl Lentz saying Jesus was quiet about it, Jesus wasn’t quiet about sexual immorality, told the offenders to sin no more, but he did not come to condemn but to save from sins. The apostles that Jesus appointed spoke out on homosexuality as sexual immorality, like fornication and adultery. Those who practice such will not inherit the kingdom of God. Go figure.
