Justin Bieber Says Christians Are ‘Overly Churchy and Religious,’ Claims ‘I Wanna Live Like Jesus’

Bieber-compressedPop icon Justin Bieber, known outside of his music for his wild lifestyle and run-ins with the law, as well as his relationship with NYC Hillsong ‘Pastor’ Carl Lentz, told Complex Magazine this month that Christians are often “overly churchy and religious,” and that he wants to just “live like Jesus.”

“At this point, my faith has gotten me to where I am. My faith has brought me to a whole other level. I love talking about my faith,” he said.

Bieber stated that he believes some churches and Christians turn people away by being “overly pushy.”

“I think that with Christians, they’ve left such a bad taste in people’s mouths. Just like, overly pushy with the subject, overly churchy and religious,” he opined. “There’s a lot of really weird stuff going on at churches. You ever flicked on a channel and a late-night church show is on? Sometimes it’s like, ‘You better do this or you gon’ die and you gon’ burn in hell!’ And you’re like, I don’t want anything to do with this.”

Bieber outlined, however, that he desires to speak more about his faith out of his belief that everyone should be able to share their point of view.

“I personally love Jesus and that was my salvation. I want to share what I’m going through and what I’m feeling and I think it shouldn’t be ostracized,” he said. “I think that everybody should get their chance to share what they’re doing or where their journey is headed, whether they’re straight or gay or what they believe in. We’re in a place now in 2015 where people have gotta be open-minded.”

“I think that people, as soon as they start hearing me saying I’m a Christian, they’re like, ‘Whoa Justin, back up, take a step back.’ Also, I do not want to shove this down anyone’s throat. I just wanna honestly live like Jesus,” Bieber continued. “He created a pretty awesome template of how to love people and how to be gracious and kind. If you believe it, he died for our sins.”

Using profanity, the pop star compared his relationship with God to that of a girlfriend.

“If I have an awesome, bomb girlfriend, I’m gonna wanna show her off and go around and tell people my girl is the [expletive]. I’m not gonna cheat on her because she’s the best,” he stated. “It’s like with God: The whole thing with religion is you present yourself holy and bring your offerings so that God can bless you, when the whole point of the relationship [should be], ‘No, I’m gonna do this because He loves me.'”

Bieber opposes abortion, but says he is uncertain about exceptions. He believes that homosexuality is “everyone’s own decision” and in regard to abstinence once said, “I don’t think you should have sex with anyone unless you love them.” He has made headlines over the past few years regarding his friendship with Hillsong New York’s Carl Lentz, who is stated to have baptized Bieber last year after he came under fire for racist comments.

He is young, rich, and most likely started out his walk of faith with a very weak understanding of what following Jesus really means. Hopefully at some point the Lord will take Justin to a place where he will see beyond himself.

    • Ugo Ugo LiuLi Hai

Fantastic comment. Our ways are not God’s ways. Moses was a killer, Saul persecuted the Church, many people God used had faults in them.

God is not looking for people that are righteous but sinners.

    • Emmanuel

Right on. the key is if JB will allow himself to be led.

  • Josey

He is saying what he’s been told to say, it reeks of deception. He hasn’t renounced any of his old ways, he is only speaking words, there has to be a true sorrowful repentance and one must be born new, born again by the Spirit of God, the old man dies and a new one is born.

    • Chrissy Vee

Josey, you are being to churchy and pushy. 🙂 ♥

      • Carol Cantell Moorby

Chrissy…………Josey is right! You are clueless and ignorant. You are as bad as Bieber.Just repeating what others say instead of what the Lord says.

        • FoJC_Forever

I think she was kidding, being sarcastic with Josey.

        • Chrissy Vee

Carol, I was trying to be funny. Sorry if you misunderstood. Notice I upvoted her. Peace. ♥

        • LadyFreeBird<In God I Trust

Chrissy is a good Christian. She like to joke around.

          • Chrissy Vee

            Aw, thanks Lady 😀 ♥

            Your welcome 🙂

      • Theresa Easley

        Lol 🙂

    • Danfire

I agree! You will know them by their fruits!

    • Emmanuel

To be Holy is to be set apart or to be different for the Lord. This guy must be taught that.

    • Desertcatn

You are putting the cart before the horse; it is our walk with Jesus that molds us and creates a new heart for Jesus. If we could do it without Jesus, what would we need him for? Bieber is a baby Christian and I agree with him on how many Christians, treat new Christians. Many are driven away from going to church, where they would learn and grow. What are the fruits of a person, full of their own righteousness, hurting those trying to find their way to Jesus Christ? Aren’t we called to have a humble heart?

  • Laura Minton

Justin, if you really want to live like Jesus, you need to read the Bible, which you obviously have not done. Christians don’t get to pick and choose what we want to believe.

    • Emmanuel

He was saved (allegedly) on Saturday and preaching on Sunday.
      Great post

  • Chrissy Vee

Open-minded faith? Strait is the gate and narrow is the way, Justin. May the Lord truly open your eyes to the truth. You just may be a stumbling block to those who are watching you live the lifestyle you do and profess Jesus.

Stumbling block: a behavior or attitude that leads another to sin.

LingOL at myself for addressing this comment to him. 😛

    • Chrissy Vee

P.S. Hillsong just had a scandal involving homosexuality.

  • steve34609

Hmmm. Hold the judgment and ugliness please. Weren’t ALL of us once screwed up kids at one time or another? At least he’s moving towards the right path. No telling how many he can potentially influence for good if this takes root and he matures into solid Believer. Meantime, will he be able to withstand the attacks that are sure to come? Will he be willing to make sacrifices for his fledgling faith? Time will tell. I bet he’d appreciate prayers and not critical judgment.

    • Nidalap

Attacks? I think not. In order for the compulsion to attack to be tripped, they’d have to truly believe that HE truly believes. Since worldly folk are every bit the fruit inspectors we all should be, I think he’ll be pretty safe from any attacks…

      • Dave_L

“I think he’ll be pretty safe from any attacks…” except ours?

        • Nidalap

Fruit inspecting isn’t attacking, nor is pointing out incorrect doctrine. You already knew that though, correct? 🙂

          • Dave_L

“And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?” (Matthew 7:3)

          • Nidalap

Wowzers…thanks for pointing out that mote in my eye…

          • Dave_L

We all stand condemned when we judge others by Christ’s standard of righteousness. So I condemn myself if what I posted applies to you. It’s your call.

      • steve34609

I disagree. Flawed as Bieber’s faith may be (and let our Lord judge him) he has publicly ‘taken the name of Jesus as his Lord and Savior’. This will raise a stink from Canada to Hollywood and yes, he’ll be attacked.

        • Nidalap

Sorry, but no. We have plenty of politicians who will claim that Name as well. Unless their lives start reflecting that, you’ll note a certain freedom from attacks. Don’t believe me? Well, there are several atheists and general anti-Christians who frequent this site. Let’s just see whether the attack compulsion gets tripped…::Crickets chirping:: Nope…

          • steve34609

Not only politicians. They’re just the ones who are ostensibly held to a higher standard because they’re our political leaders. They’re watched intensely by the press, watchdog orgs and investigative journalists. Of course more ‘dirt’ is going to be exposed with them. As far as ‘living their lives reflecting Christ’ I have to say that Jesus warned us about judging by the outward appearance when inside there is ‘darkness and death like the tomb’ (paraphrasing)… The world is full of Christian hypocrites and sinners who maintain a ‘strained’ relationship with God, including many Pastors and Priests. We are born with hearts that are ‘desperately wicked from birth’ to paraphrase the Bible. Once we realize that ‘sin is sin’ and that God doesn’t differentiate between ‘types of sin’ and that all sin, to Him, is unacceptable…then we can agree that we’re all just sinners saved by Grace and that we’re in the same boat Bieber is. I know, beyond doubt, that I neither know Beiber’s heart nor have I walked in his shoes. Therefore, I’m not his judge. As far as his views on homosexuality go…he is correct: homosexuality is everyone’s own decision. It’s called free will. The decision to knowingly and willfully continue to sin will have repercussions, of course. Beiber needs to be corrected on what the Bible says about homosexuality, but he’s still a growing Christian who needs to be nurtured, cultivated and yes, rewarded, for his public acknowledgement of Jesus. Years ago, Amy Grant was harshly criticized by her loving brothers and sisters in Christ for agreeing to allow her music to be aired on secular radio stations. (How could she do that!? That’s worldly!) Well, I don’t know how many were saved because of Amy’s decision,( and yes, that IS the most important facet of this issue: how many will be saved) but one thing is for sure…today, there are numerous ‘Christian artists’ who are getting airplay in the secular realm and touching those that would, otherwise, never be touched simply because of the fact that they’re never going to browse for a Christian radio station on their tuners. Because of Bieber’s status we need to see this as a huge opportunity for the cause of Jesus Christ among millennials. He needs to be encouraged and corrected gently by those who are close to him. Let’s face it: we don’t know him. We won’t ever know him. WE will never get that chance to affect Bieber’s walk with Christ. The only ‘Justin Bieber’ we will ever know is the one the media concocts. (And this goes for ALL public figures/celebrities.) So how can it help our walks with Christ if we, by reflex, judge these people viscerally based only upon the information that we’ve been force-fed by the Godless media? Celebrities are made of exactly the same, weak stuff we are. ‘You that is without sin, cast the first stone…’

          • Nidalap

            Matthew 7:15-29

15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?

17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.

18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.

19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:

25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.

26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:

27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

28 And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine:

29 For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

          • Desertcatn

How about a young tree, should we stomp it, because we think it might be evil? How will our young, who have been twisted by new age teachers, come to Jesus Christ? We are in a different age, the schools have done their damage to a whole generation, should we just write them off?

  • Carol Cantell Moorby

If he really wants to be like JESUS then he will read and study the bible . It’s not about being open minded but about being God minded. God has certain requirements in the bible and they will always bless us if we are obedient. He is quite naive and misinformed about JESUS. JESUS isnt religious…..and bible believers aren’t either. Religion is man made. A personal, relationship with Jesus is God made. Justin has a lot to learn before he starts preaching his philosophy. He seems to be somewhat confused in the Chrisrian doctrine. There are churches anointed of God and some that are NOT! Not all churches are ordained of God.There are in these last days many false prophets. You must be able to discern by the word of God to grow in the revelation and knowledge of JESUS.Therefore, you must know what the word of God teaches.Scripture should always back up what you say !

    • Chrissy Vee

      Amen!

    • Desertcatn

These are all things that will be learned as Bieber grows in Christianity, if he is not driven from the church. Maybe instead have a humble heart, open to conviction if you are one driving someone away, instead of toward Jesus Christ.

    • sandra-paquette-

He also doesn’t know that Christ is the same today, yesterday and forever. He changes not. Christ was not open-mind, nor did Christ say get with it for year 2015. I’m afraid going to the wrong place and has been deceived.

  • Crystal Swisher

I think Justin Bieber has a lot to learn about what being a Christian is about. He needs to find a church of his liking and go to it, experience the teaching and preaching, visit in a SS class, which is where you get most of your “teaching” and then tell somebody about being “too churchy.” Christians need to be around other affirming Christians not running wild in the streets of Hollywood or wherever he lives. He’s young – at least he’s making an attempt to understand. Unlike 99% of the other shallow Hollyweirdos………….

  • FoJC_Forever

Many are “churchy”, this is Truth, but this doesn’t give someone permission to live how they choose. Those who know and love Jesus (the) Christ seek to follow Him, not just make public, religiously oriented declarations. There are many deceptions at work in the earth, and they are growing in strength the closer we get to the End.

He’s young. Hopefully he’ll have a true experience with the Jesus (the) Christ via the Holy Spirit and turn from his own ways, before it’s too late.

    • Chrissy Vee

      Amen!

“Who art thou that judgest another man’s servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand.” (Romans 14:4)

    • Living Holy

totally agree with your comment..it is full of the love of God..thank you

    • Phipps Mike

he didnt say that they should live how they choose, his point was about this: “Bieber stated that he believes some churches and Christians turn people away by being “overly pushy.” something like say Kim Davis….

      • Emmanuel

On the flip side, the so-called Christians, like Obama, that speak it but don’t live it. They also push people away. What are theses people called?

  • Tyler Mitchell

The Bieb’s would be weirded out by the real Yeshua/Jesus then. After Jesus healed a man who was sick for years and could not walk..He told the man “You’re well now..so stop sinning or something worse might happen to you” Gosh..that insensitive ..weird Jesus!

  • Ugo Ugo LiuLi Hai

How sure are we he is not reading the Bible. God works in people differently. I pray that God accept him and direct him to His Cross where he will get total deliverance and Grace. Our job as true Christians is just to Love people their souls are lost and pray to The God of harvest to water their souls so that The Word of God will be fruitful in their lives.

God help Bieber to sincerely seek your face and find your Truth.

  • Mark Hodge

So is Justin a Christian or not? Katy Perry claimed faith in youth, and now look at her? Same with Miley Cyrus. Both now blaspheme the faith unto the uttermost. So what will their eternal fate be? Of course we are all born sinners until death or rapture prevails, but unto what degree? Also do we confess our sins or pretend they don’t exist? Many Christians claim purity, but they are only deceiving themselves. Only Jesus is pure, as we all fall short. Truth is, Christianity is a continual progression unto the light. And the gospel of salvation is where the long holy journey begins 😉

    • Emmanuel

We will know by his fruits (music)

  • Dave_L

    Here’s a JB quote; It shows more depth and spirituality than the above;

“He created a pretty awesome template of how to love people and how to be gracious and kind,” says Bieber. “If you believe it, he died for our sins. Sometimes when I don’t feel like doing something, but I know it’s right, I remember, I’m pretty sure Jesus didn’t feel like going to the cross and dying so that we don’t have to feel what we should have to feel.”

    • Names_Stan

Much admiration for your efforts on the thread, Dave. Sadly, it appears 90% of the comments show the truly tragic nature of much of modern Christianity.

Religion wrapped in boasting and condemnation is a religion few outsiders will be attracted to. But I suppose they would tell us Jesus never spoke about the scourge of religious leaders and their prideful legalism.

  • Lisa

My first thought is I wonder what this is all about? But I guess we’ll find out…..

  • Captain Porter

    Still not convinced.

“Who art thou that judgest another man’s servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand.” (Romans 14:4)

      • Captain Porter

        Bananas, oranges, pears, strawberries….

  • Fallenman4Jesus

Please, what a joke. It’s about fruit Justin – you can’t get figs from a thorn bush – you are a thorn bush.

    • Dave_L

“Judge not, that ye be not judged.” (Matthew 7:1)

      • Fallenman4Jesus

Matthew 7:2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.

People always leave that part out. We are not told to not judge. We are told to not be hypocrites. Bieber is a hypocrite – this is just a publicity stunt, jumping on the “Christian band-wagon.”

Jesus goes on to tell us

Matthew 7:6 Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.

Seems like we need to be making a judgment about who are dogs and swine. Bieber is both. Let him repent of his ways – struggle as we do with sin, let’s see some struggle, not openly embracing the world like he does and then pretend to be a follower of Jesus. He has made up his own Jesus.

        • Dave_L

JB is a young inexperience Christian brother. Show some mercy and at least pray for him…

        • steve34609

Last I heard, in America, the Christian bandwagon is under attack from government, Leftist organizers, the LGBT community and others. It’s bullet-riddled, surrounded and at least one wheel is broken. Overseas, in many nations, the Christian bandwagon never even got past the blueprint stage. In many nations, Christians are jailed, beaten, tortured, executed and persecuted. It sounds to me as if jumping on that Christian bandwagon might be somewhat of a courageous act.

        • Dave_L

How are you not judging him? Only God knows his heart.

        • http://biblewordstudy.org Adam in Christ

I have to admit that I get annoyed when people isolate Matthew 7:1 without its full context.

Thank you for providing more context!

      • Josey

I do not know what world you live in, but you constantly use these same scriptures out of context. In this world we make judgements daily, God give those who ask Him the wisdom to make right judgements and decisions. We decide where to go, who we want to be around, we are required to make godly choices which includes making judgements as to what kind of people to associate with, some we hold closer than others, those are judgement calls. You use this scripture that Paul wrote but you neglect the many other scriptures where Paul talks about Judging one who professes Christ and lives otherwise, Paul also says not to have anything to do with such a one, many times Paul makes judgements and teaches young Timothy the same, read Timothy ch 5 kjv. This new low of Bieber is taking the Lord’s name in vain. Stop taking scriptures out of context! You make judgements against Christians who are making judgements based on their beliefs. Bieber made a judgement against what he calls “churchy people” I guess he means those who are crazy in love with Jesus and obey His commandments, that is too churchy for him, too bad. I don’t really care what this Bieber says for he is about publicity stunts, this just sinks him to a new low but I do care about the young ones he is being used to deceive and that is why we need to stand against this in prayer and through speaking the truth of God’s word and not only him but against all those who are influencing the younger generation, we need to stand against that as best we can with God’s help and let God handle what we cannot. He needs Christ for real and doesn’t need to be pacified that this is a good step in the right direction, for it doesn’t bring him any closer to Christ, those who manage Bieber want to use him to deceive young people into believing that those who truly love and obey Christ are “too churchy” and they want to get the message out there to these young ones that you can have Jesus and live any old way you please, this falls in line with what the one world religion is teaching. Only true repentance to God through Jesus Christ will change a heart and life and there will be a night and day change in the one that truly repents and puts their faith in Christ for everything. That doesn’t mean that they will be perfect in all things, no, they will be babes in Christ and will grow as the feed on the word of God, they will learn to sit up, crawl, walk, etc. But Christ Jesus will definitely be evident in a changed heart and will complete the good work He began in His Children.

        • Dave_L

Thanks for your concern. When we judge others we must use ourselves as the standard of righteousness, because if we use God as the standard, we condemn ourselves as well.

So even when I post a Scripture about judging, I condemn myself as well, but feel it is better to post and share the guilt than not.

          • Desertcatn

Thank you for speaking out, Dave L.. God does work in us all differently, I’ve always felt rejected by most Christians, yet God is using me in the most amazing ways. I know those in the Bible, most used, were some of the most passionate, but flawed individuals. Only God knows a person’s heart. One of the most welcome churches I ever went to was a prison ministry, everyone there knew they were broken and were in tears; thankful for Jesus to be in their lives.

          • Dave_L

Thanks for sharing. I did some prison ministry too. A real eye opener.

“And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.” (Luke 18:13–14)

          • Desertcatn

            Amen, thank you!

  • Unionville

The Gospel according to Justin. Sigh. Jesus wasn’t wishy-washy. He wouldn’t have been crucified if He was. I wish people would just realize that if they can’t accept the Bible the way it is, leave it alone. Don’t change it according to your philosophy. You might deceive someone with your false doctrine and God really, really hates that.

  • Living Holy

Scripture says in Galatians 5.22-23 and Matthew 7.20..you shall know them by there fruits..pushy and churchy is that not mans judgement….The christians I know are full of love and righteousness..real christians don’t want there family and co-workers and friends & love ones to go to hell…that is a real place we need to wake up people ..Jesus said you deny me before men I’ll deny you before my father…don’t want to hear him say depart from me ..I never knew you..these words are in his word the bible..God loves you and died on the cross that you can be free and saved..Romans 10.9-12 is how you to can have eternal life..Jesus loves you …

  • Phipps Mike

I totally agree with Justin. I dont care for him, but he is right about the “overly Churchy” thing. ESPECIALLY fundamentalists who cant even wipe without asking Gods permission.

    • Desertcatn

      Agree!

  • http://www.bing.com/ Martin Smit

Jesus said, “Unless you repent, you will all likewise perish”. Sometimes it’s like, ‘You better do this or you gon’ die and you gon’ burn in hell!’ Sometimes it’s like that.

  • Mark Bouckaert

Well… if he starts at least by giving up drugs, driving under the influence, and abiding by the golden rule, there is hope. Perhaps this is his first step to redemption. One can only hope for him.

  • NWaff

Sadly, the last thing that comes to mind when thinking about this guy, is some who holds church and religion in high esteem.

  • Emmanuel

JB, you might want to go back to church and truly repent. If you are truly repented, then the music will reflect. But, I doubt it. Also, as a new christian, you need to know that Jesus is the only example. He did love everyone but he also showed tough love to the religious or wannabes like yourself. So get right or you are no different than those snakes that come on TV.

    • sandra-paquette-

A true christian is a born-again believer. Obvious he isn’t or he wouldn’t be talking the way he did.

  • http://biblewordstudy.org Adam in Christ

Well Justin, if you want to live like Jesus, he had a certain thing or two to say about a wealthy person who wished to follow Him, as well:

    Mark 10:17
…(17)And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?

(18)And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God. (19)Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother. (20)And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth. (21)Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. (22)And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.

(23)And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! (24)And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in
