Clothing Retailer Topshop Confirms Its Changing Rooms Are ‘Gender Neutral’ Following ‘Transgender’ Complaint

MANCHESTER, U.K. – Concerns are being raised as an international clothing retailer has confirmed that its changing rooms are to be considered “gender neutral” following a controversial incident in one of its U.K. stores.

Travis Alabanza, a man who identifies as a female and uses the pronoun “they” to describe himself, was recently shopping with friends at a Topshop store in Manchester when he attempted to enter a women’s changing room. However, he was stopped by an attendant, who told him that he would have to use a men’s changing room.

“She wasn’t rude, but she wasn’t sympathetic either,” Alabanza stated.

When the store employee directed Alabanza to try on his clothes in a men’s changing room downstairs, he became upset and frustrated.

“I said, ‘I’m not going to be safe down there. What do you want me to do?’ And they just kind of shrugged,” Alabanza, who was wearing a dress and makeup at the time, recounted.

Topshop is a British fashion retailer that sells men’s and women’s clothing in the U.K., the U.S., and around the world. In an interview with BuzzFeed News, Alabanza expressed his displeasure with the chain for how they treated him.

“I normally online shop for this reason,” he said. “But we were going in a group, so I thought it would be fun to go shopping in a group. We were in quite a good mood and all found outfits that we all wanted to wear.”

“My day instantly became politicized when all I wanted was a chill day shopping,” he added.

Following the incident, Alabanza took to Twitter to criticize the international retail chain.

“Hey @Topshop just experienced transphobia in your Manchester store,” he wrote. “Not letting me use the changing room I decide is [expletive], sort it out.”

In another tweet, he described gender-specific changing rooms as “dangerous” because they put “trans shoppers at risk from harassment from other shoppers.”

“Who made you in charge of deciding who is woman enough to use your changing room?” he asked.

Soon afterward, Topshop released a statement advising that it had updated the company’s changing room policy to allow all customers to use whatever facilities they prefer.

“Both the Topshop and Topman fitting rooms are available for all customers to use,” a spokesperson with the company said.

According to reports, the decision had already been made during the summer, but not all employees were aware of the new policy.

The retail chain’s announcement immediately drew concerns, including from the founder of a U.K. parenting organization committed to helping parents and teens navigate difficult sexual issues.

“A huge part of the market for Topshop are teenage girls and young women,” said Stephanie Davies-Arai, founder of Transgender Trend, in an interview with the Daily Express. “Topshop is saying the needs of one male who identifies as a woman are more important than a large section of its market.”

“There will be a lot of parents of teenage girls and young women themselves who will boycott Topshop because they don’t feel safe,” Davies-Arai added. “It is putting women and girls at risk. It is unbelievable that a high street store could countenance the safety and privacy of women and girls and not take that into account.”

    LOL. Pay attention next time you shop at Walmart. The Godly Walmart near me has one bank of changing rooms side by side. Some rooms have a picture of a female on some doors and other rooms have a pictures of a male on the doors. But the changing rooms are right next to each other.

    Evil Target has a nearly identical set up, but without pictures on the doors. Wow. Both set ups offer identical privacy.

    Every sporting good store has unisex changing rooms.

    Freaking out over this is silly.

          I have kids. I have nieces and nephews. As an adult, I pay attention to real safety issues not hyped up fear mongering.

          A picture on the door of a dressing room has no substance.

          Store dressing rooms are private. Lots of stores have only one set of dressing rooms in the middle of the store. This is what works best for the store and has nothing to do with gender issues. (They only need one staff person to monitor the changing rooms.) Walmart, Target, several sporting goods stores, and others all do this. Putting pictures on doors does not change safety or privacy one bit.

        I am a woman. I have no problem using a private dressing room without a picture of a girl in a dress on the door. The picture on the door does not make a dressing room either more or less safe. The fact that another person used the dressing room before me and another person will use the dressing room after me does not impact my privacy or my safety. The gender of those people makes no difference.

        I am also fine if a trans woman comes into the public restroom where I am. I much prefer that to a trans man with a beard.

        I did have to think through how I would feel in the more open changing room at the rec center. It would be odd to notice a woman with extra parts. I decided that I could mind my own business if she could.

        I learned about the extremely high risk of physical attack faced by trans people. As a moral and compassionate person, I decided I care more about the physical safety of another person than my own temporary and mild discomfort.

            We are talking about private changing rooms. Nobody is in danger. Many stores do not have different rooms for men and women.

            We are talking about a room with a door in the middle of a store. After you finish using the room, somebody else will use it. What is so scary about that?

            I am a woman. I am not a helpless quivering ball of jello. I can do research and separate reality from fear mongering. I am not interested in using lies and fear to make other people’s lives difficult when it doesn’t impact me or my safety in any way whatsoever.

            Unwanted same sex attractions are not “overcome”. You can do two things. You can suppress them or you can just decide to fall in love like everyone else. What you can’t do is change it. And that’s not my opinion – that’s the position of the APA and many other scientific groups. You have ZERO evidence that it can be changed, and by the way, telling gay people to live celibate lives because Jesus isn’t “changing” them.

    Retailers have had non-gender-specific changing rooms forever. Have you ever been to a store before? Go to your local mall. Go into a clothing store. Sometimes there’s just a couple of booths with a curtain that opens up right into the store. It doesn’t even have anything to do with transgender people.

    If you don’t like trying on clothes in public, ask the clerk about their return policies and try the stuff on at home.

      At some thrift stores that’s not possible because of a no return policy such as Value Village. But at least only one person can go in at a time and I don’t recall they even had gender signs. They are about the size of an outhouse.

    I don’t buy into the safety thing as I would stay outside of the changing room where my daughter was. The main issue here is the attempt by the revisionists to blot out the idea of male and female and replace them with “it” so that anything goes is acceptable.

    So the battle must be on what is normal and natural because that is how society works best.

            Believe what you want to, but don’t be so arrogant to believe that you insist we MUST agree with you. NO one should be forced to change their minds about a belief that is unchanged for centuries. We believe what we believe for a reason just as legitimate to us as your science is to you.
            Get off your high horse and understand that the majority of people still don’t understand or accept transgenders just on the fact that they appeared suddenly in our world without trying to help us adjust to the idea and expect us to BE what they INSIST we agree with. We had the gays for 3 decades and we are more reasonable about their existence. But flying in on the gay stand for equal rights did not do a justice to what they are trying to get the public to do.
            Accepting transgender is not like accepting homosexuality at all and should not have been brought into the world without a lot of preparation like the gays did.
            Why do you expect the world to accept transgenders like we do finally for gays when there is nothing to even compare to gays. It is a different thing to be gay than to want to be an entirely different sex.
            So if transgenders want to be accepted so badly then stop insisting and try introducing the concept and encourage us to, instead of trying to force people who have no idea what the issue is just that people who are strange when compared to reality – even stranger to us than the people who are gay.
            They have to do the same groundwork that the gays have to get the same from the people of the world. Christian or not too many people reject it totally on the principle that they do not understand or believe that what they say can be true.
            It’s not just Christians that feel it is wrong;
            When you consider that transgenders make up only 1% of the US population, why should we just agree for no other reason than we are told we MUST. There are so few people who claim this behavior that it isn’t even seen by the majority of the USA except in the media. HOW can you expect anyone to just agree? So little evidence just in the fact that such a low number of people are evident to society. Sorry, but until they show themselves as who they are to society and that is for a length of time showing good behavior, or they will have a hard time being accepted even by non Christians.
            Stop hassling Christians and start promoting who these strange people are by proving they are like us or good people or you can’t expect anything but argument from anyone who does not agree with your belief. Try moving on to the pros and stop being negative towards people just because they believe differently than you do.
            Since it is very unlikely that you will change anyone’s mind here on a Christian board, why not move to a board that you can help people understand them, instead of people who have a firm belief in our God. You waste your time here not because we wont accept what you insist is proof, but because we do have faith in our belief and that faith is not easily changed to include anything that is against what our God has said. If we agreed with this issue, we would give up our Salvation for a sin we don’t do, just ‘accept’ and that is not how one is a follower of Christ. We accept all of God’s word as truth so anything outside it is not truth to us.
            If you did not have the scientific document to convince you of it being ‘normal’ would you still believe it is? If all the scientific documents agreed that it is not normal, would you still think transgenderism is ‘normal’. Did you search for all sides of the issue or just the sites that agree with what you believe? Believing something on the net is very easy to do, especially without finding out the oppositions accounts of the same thing.
            I bet I could google “is Santa Claus real” and I would find sites that say it is, and sites that conclude that it is the story we tell our kids to give them a day of joy, but that Santa Claus is not a reality himself.
            I can find any number of pro or con sites for everything I want to, if I search properly without a preference within my search. It is the site itself that signals if it is valid or not. I found scientific sites that deny that transgenderism is normal just as I found others (including yours) insist that it is normal. So since they are both accredited sites and scientists, which one should I accept and which to toss when it has the same qualifications to base it on? You chose one, and likely ignored the opposition with your search. LIKELY meaning you might have not bothered to view those sites, when the sites that agree with you are just that. agreeable.
            Go try to convince the other people who do not rely on the Word of God that transgender is a real normality and you might just have some success in your endeavors, but here you are just going to argue with us and it isn’t a positive thing for you to be here anyway. Unless you think having arguments is a positive thing. We prefer to discuss with the reasons being debated, not someone who just insists they are right and criticizes our belief. You wont get anyone to listen to you here so go find a site that isn’t Christian where someone is bound to agree with you.
            You must have no concept of the faith we have for our God and trust that he is a Just God to all. If you understood how we are faithful, trusting in a God who is omnipresent, and not letting ourselves lose those things is what a Christian IS, and if someone steps out of those things, they are no longer Christians if they cannot accept God’s Word as Truth, without changing the scriptures to reflect what we want them to say.
            By the way, insisting that we are ‘dumb’ and that your belief is the only truth, is very selfish of you to disregard others beliefs totally. No one is required to believe what you believe any more than you are required to believe what we believe. Both of those beliefs are choices and we’ve made our choice by following Jesus. Nothing you say will budge our beliefs. Nothing. It would be kind of like a woman making advances on you telling you that your wife isn’t enough of a woman for you. Do you remain faithful to your marriage and the trust that your wife has that you will be faithful, by trying out this woman to see if she is right that your wife isn’t enough but she is?
            Changing the way we honestly believe is like getting a divorce from God. We are not that easily tempted to do that if we are true Christians. Find someone who is able to compromise their beliefs and change them because you won’t convince a faithful Christian.

            There are many gays that have come out to say they have repented their way of life and follow Jesus after that.

            Science has not said that it is a “normal” way to feel about one’s self. It has not been able to have enough scientists that agree about it being “normal” to officially say that Science is behind it totally. You are relying on a very limited amount of scientific documentation that is not showing as supported by other scientific documentation. Scientists have to have more than their own tests to confirm anything and the report that you gave to me before is just one report, while the other ones I’ve read are just as legitimate and they don’t agree with the one you gave to me.
            Saying we are in denial of science is a incorrect when science has not shown a firm determination for this ‘condition’. Show me where all the scientists agree that this is “natural” and it might give me pause, but it will not change how I feel about God’s Word.
            I don’t care really, because I treat everyone the same and do not hassle people about their sins unless they are willing to listen to me explain the gospel to them. Otherwise God told us to leave sinners alone to the Judgement. It is not my duty to try to harass someone for their sins but to just try to help them see. So in my belief, I know I do not agree with it, but I am not going to treat them like they are not humans. I do not believe that is how Jesus would harass or demean non-believers about our faith issues. He never demeaned anyone who was a sinner except someone who knew the consequences as a believer and that was to remind him of the consequences with the idea that they will stop the sin and repent.

            Mental beliefs that people have are usually treatable with medication and behavior therapy. Schizophrenia for instance is not a normal mental condition and is treated as such.
            Borderline Personality Disorder is not a normal mental condition and is treated as such.
            Insanity is not a normal mental condition and is treated as such.
            There are many mental conditions that are not considered “normal” that everyone believes in.
            Why is their belief ‘mentally’ go above all the other mentally ‘believed” (by the persons). A schizophrenic believes there are two people talking to them but it is considered abnormal and treated as such.
            Science can often be seen with both sides shown as the ‘truth’ in science. So there is less likelihood of a common person to be able to decide which is the truth. Anything on the internet can be found to agree with anything you want to look for.
            Science has not made conclusive arguments about transgenderism from the searches I have done. It is still in the early stages of examination and it has not had a final report about it yet. Science has ideas about it, but have not found the reason to base it on. Everything I have read on reasonable sites has told me that.
            Stating that science proves that it is real, is not accurate as scientists state that there is no official conclusion at this as of yet. By the way, I am not willfully ignorant as I do look these things up to attempt understanding before I can decide if it against the word or not. I was not a Christian all my life and can see the differences between the two worlds. It helps to understand why Christians believe in the ways they do, with an added understanding of why non-believers believe the way they do.
            Anyone who thinks they can wish away a definite sin in the bible is wishing away a life of eternal joy. Trying to change the scriptures to mean what you want them to mean, is no different than wishing it away.

In human males, “genitals” typically refers to a penis and testes. In human females, it refers to the vulva, labia, etc. Either way, almost all people are born with some set of “genitals”.

All the transgender men that I’m aware of would not be considered effeminate so it’s clearly not talking about transgenderism.             Condemning fornication is not a condemnation of homosexuality or transgenderism. The Bible doesn’t condone same sex marriage but neither does it condemn it. But even if the Bible did condemn same sex marriage, that still doesn’t condemn homosexuality or transgenderism. It just means two people of the same sex can’t get married. The specific act condemned in Leviticus 18:22 is in the context of idolatry. But even if it did condemn a specific act in any context, it still doesn’t condemn homosexuality or transgenderism. It just means two men can’t do a specific sex act. If the Bible were to actually condemn homosexuality, it would have to condemn lesbianism, which it never does.

            No I’m sorry but Sodom was destroyed for the homosexuality but there were a great number of sins that the place was committing. Homosexuality was the biggest as it is pointed out specifically by the actions they describe (man with man/ woman with woman) this scripture tells of more than those acts being sinful, and does not remove the sin of homosexuality. When they talk about a sinner in the bible it is rarely just one sin they mention.
            One sin is the same punishment as any sin is. Sin is sin. But the bible (among other reasons) is to teach us what sin is and it spells it all out very well, and how to avoid it; one way is to recognize it is a sin and not do it because of that.
            Changing God’s Word to suit a person’s feelings is not what God intended. He told us all things that we do that we should not do. It was to help us be better people.
            Christians know what God’s word said and it hasn’t changed in all the time it has been used. Homosexuality has been considered a sin for centuries as far as Christians are concerned, and trying to tell us we are wrong about our beliefs when they are not believers in the bible in the first place is not going to be convincing to those of us who actually understand what God meant in the scriptures. There are very few devoted Christians that will agree to change what the scriptures say, to put in a belief that is against our God.
            If you are a gay or transgender why even bother trying to get our minds to change. Just accept your expected punishment if that is what bothers you about the lack of Christian understanding and stop trying so desperately to be allowed to go to Heaven despite the sins. If you do not want to accept the punishment then change and follow the word of God, don’t try to tell all the faithful people that we’ve been wrong all these centuries when that is unlikely let alone not reasonable to believe.
            I don’t listen to others about the word of the Lord, I read it myself and if I have questions I have a lot of people in my church I can discuss it with, but I still hold on to what I believe until it is explained why my belief is wrong. Even the sermons I hear have to be able to be verified in the scripture to be true words of God not a persons opinions.
            You need to choose either to follow Jesus and try to stop all sinning or accept that they won’t agree and that you have to live with your choice. It’s as simple as that. God’s Word does not change, nor is it confusing to those who God helps with understanding.
            You can’t change what constitutes a sin, but you can change whether you commit those sins or not. That is a choice you have to make. Saying that the scriptures don’t say what they say will not change what God determines as sin and the sins will end up as a reason for punishment.
            That is true for everyone who thinks God won’t notice a sin “just this once” – he will notice and it will be in your life book on Judgement Day. Believing it is not a sin, doesn’t change the fact that it is in God’s eyes.

          FYI, we do not use the Queen Janes version of the bible to understand God and his purposes for us. That is for those who are afraid of the truth so they have to mash and mangle the truth to keep it at arm’s length so they can live in the deception that satan has fed them.

          where is the condemnation of pederasty? (sex between men and boys) They say nothing about young boys being involved in any of those thing.
          If it were about male prostitution, it would have mentioned the money as well as a sin because paying (which prostitutes require) for a sin is a sin too.
          I don’t know why some people try to convince Christians that the scripture is not about homosexuality, so it must be the fear of being punished by God for the sin so if that is the case, they are only fooling themselves by trying to convince the world that God’s Word is in error, when he is NEVER in error.
          God said what he said and it is not able to be twisted into other things because of the way he said it. There is no question because the whole bible is for our edification and if there was anything that was not clear to followers of Jesus/God he put more clarification for us either with it, or in later scriptures.
          He did not do this in the case of homosexuality. He did not clarify that it was ONLY some people who do these things that are sinners. he did not specify that it was ok to have homosexual sex anywhere in the bible. He specifically said it was NOT ok.
          Wanting to change the scriptures to what we want them to say is a sin. We can’t change the words to be to our liking.
          It’s like God saying it’s ok to intentionally murder (outside of war) in some cases, or it’s ok to rape in some cases – he does not say that, because it is not his Word.
          If someone is afraid of the known consequences then they would be better to change what is in their lives that are sinful, not try to change the bible to say it is not a sin.
          It just doesn’t work like that.

            One has only to look at the evidence and see that a boy becoming a girl or a girl becoming a boy is total madness. I have just read another story about two men where this happened and one had his important bits cut off.

            They said that they were fed a litany of lies and regret having ever listened to the so called experts.

            They are both men again and the one that lost his parts said that he will never experience true love because of this.

            I have no disagreement but they are of this world and they have created a social situation that means our own beliefs must be ignored and it is worth losing a life in the name of Jesus but if there is a way to avoid that would it not be a recommendation from God to do that to avoid the conflict with our faith, to continue to stand firm in our trust in His Word as well as stop us from losing everything while we stand firm in our faith. He knows who would give up their life for Him but it does not mean he wants everyone to lose their life for it if it is not necessary. Yes he wants us to make sacrifices but not to the extent that everyone should give up making a living in the world altogether. By standing up for our faith, and not giving in to their insistence by avoiding the problem that is causing that conflict in the first place, it is following God’s Word when he tells us to be a peace with all men. Most often it is our responsibility to make it plain that we have a belief and we are not going to step away from that belief, so we are going to not agree but avoid how they can have our faith work against us. Our faith should work FOR us, not against us. By finding a solution that is a compromise that works for both sides it is eliminating any conflict before it can start.
            God wants peace in the world not strife. If we follow the word of God and all of his commands we cannot treat these people badly in any way. God told us he will take control of their punishment if they do not change their ways. Otherwise we are still supposed to behave in as close to a Christ-like way as we are able to by trying.
            His commandment to love everyone was not given for some and not others as he gave no exceptions when he said it. It is His Words that say that He wants to save the whole world and wants them to desire to come to follow him, and not have any force involved with the free will he has given us. We are supposed to do His will and sacrifice our own desires to accomplish what he wants us to do. It is not by our will, but by the Lord’s will that anything is done. By acknowledging the fact that God’s will is above our will, above our understanding, we can continue in faith that we will be alright and he is watching over us as our provider and protector, our Father, our Brother, our Friend and trying to guide us to the best path for you to have what you want in life.
            I know they are starting to change their minds a little too late, but it is a sign that God has taken control of the situation isn’t it? He is reversing them who he deems worthy that we cannot understand because we do not know everything about anyone but ourselves.
            He is the one to mete out the punishment for this issue. All we can do is pray that Jesus won’t be too long so we can pass to a place where God’s love is what abounds not the ways of this corrupted world.
            These things of the world are all temporal and we should be focused on Eternity not something that will not exist when we go to Eternity with Jesus. They are unimportant to the whole idea of Salvation because they cannot go with us to Heaven. Nor can our human bodies as the must be a spirit in order to be able to go to heaven. No humans will be there except in spirit.
            We need to believe in God’s promises and keep being good Christians who treat others the way they want to be treated themselves, and who show compassion and empathy for the issues that surround sin and are hard to overcome for anyone who has had their life built around that sin. We need to encourage them to try and not give up. We are God’s servants who are to magnify the Lord to others and always give all Glory to God almighty. Not to make people like it is impossible to please God. It is always possible to be forgiven by God for all sin, and some people do not encourage this line of belief when it involves someone they have judged to be a lost cause to Jesus as a sinner who will never convert instead of encouraging them to listen to how we believe so they learn the same desire that we have for Christ.
            I believe that anyone has a chance to repent and follow Jesus without exception. It takes caring and understanding of someones likelihood of continuing to sin, with empathy to show we do know how hard it can be to stop sinning sometimes. With the compassion that says we care and want to help you with this by showing you want the same things you have in Christ Jesus.
            Our desire for Jesus should be able to help others desire him as well.
            Our behavior says we do not want to control others beliefs, but that we want to help them. If we stand out as Good people and Christians then it will give Glory to God that we are seen as good people because we follow his guidance to be able to be as good people as we are able to be.
            so even if this world introduces talking fish that do not give the money (joke) or that speak not of the Word of God, we know that our God is here with us so it has no affect on our faith what this world is doing, and the best way to show our good behavior is to go out and be seen as a Christian who does Jesus’ commands as a way of life.

      I realize you can’t understand what they mean by “how it affects you in any way” so I will help you understand.
      He is asking if there is any way that a SSM affects your own life. Kind of like asking how does the Nazi that lives next door affect your life?
      Do gays make you join in the wedding nuptials? Do they leave their curtains open so you can watch them?
      Do they run after you telling you that you must believe and accept them?

      How does their existence make your life worse than when they hid themselves from a hateful society.

      He is asking how their existence affects anything other than your belief that they are sinners.
      Now maybe you can answer the question of how they affect your own life.

      I am in no way supporting this belief in Transgenderism, but I do think when someone asks a legitimate question, it should politely answered.

    I’m afraid I don’t understand the fuss. In large department stores, which can afford the space, there are separate changing room areas, but in so many of the smaller shops I go to, there’s just a row of dressing rooms, and you draw the curtain or close the door (not a full door, but a door with an opening and the top and the bottom), and try on clothes, all by yourself. I’ve never had a problem, and I live in San Francisco, which has plenty of transgender people, and people the opposite sex from me. What do I care who’s using the dressing room next to mine? I’ll care when a creeper, of any description, tries to peer into my dressing room. It’s never happened yet.
