Evangelist Arrested, Jailed While Preaching Christ Outside ‘A Drag Queen Christmas: The Naughty Tour’ in Texas

EL PASO, Texas — An evangelist was arrested and jailed on Wednesday after those unhappy with his message called the police as he was preaching outside of a “holiday” event in Texas called “A Drag Queen Christmas: The Naughty Tour.” Those watching his preaching being shut down broke out into cheers.

“A Drag Queen Christmas: The Naughty Tour is a must-see holiday spectacular with your favorite contestants from RuPaul’s Drag Race (VH1),” the event description reads. “For one night only, your favorite queens #werk the stage with singing, dancing, comedy and more! The holidays were never this naughty!”

Ryan Denton of Christ in the Wild Ministries had been preaching on the sidewalk adjacent to Plaza Theatre during the event, finding the gathering a good opportunity to share the gospel. Denton told Christian News Network that he generally preached about repentance and faith in Christ, and while he did mention concepts such as drag queens a few times, it was not the focus of his message.

“The drag event, like any other event, was a place where the lost would be congregating, and hence the need for a gospel witness,” he said. “Christ came to seek and save those who are lost. He came for the unrighteous, not the righteous. The great Physician of souls came for the sick and spiritually dead. This is why the gospel must go beyond the church walls.”

However, those hearing Denton’s speech soon became upset and called the police. Among those who arrived on the scene was Officer Jared Lamb, who told Denton that he had to stop preaching since complaints had been received.

“Just because you get calls does not mean I have to stop,” Denton told Lamb, according to recorded video footage reviewed by Christian News Network.

“I know that,” Lamb replied.

“Are you sure, because you keep saying that [I do],” Denton said.

Lamb also asserted during the discussion that the sidewalk Denton was standing on was private property and that he should relocate to the plaza. Denton says that he has been instructed by police in the past to stand in that exact location, and has preached there nearly a dozen times without issue. He further notes that the plaza is not near the event, so he would not be able to reach the people.

“I’m going to keep preaching right here because this is not private property,” Denton told the officer.

However, Lamb instead grabbed Denton’s stool that he had been standing on to preach and instructed Denton to follow. Those nearby broke into cheers. Lamb walked Denton into a nearby building where he told him that he didn’t want “debates” outside.

“We don’t need debates going on out there tonight,” Lamb said. “We don’t need it.”

“Sir, it’s not up to you,” Denton replied. “It’s the Constitution of the United States. It’s [my] First Amendment rights.”

“Okay. It’s up to you?” Lamb asked.

“No. The Constitution protects what I was doing, sir,” Denton stated.

Lamb then proceeded to arrest Denton. He was transported to the El Paso Jail where he was charged with Criminal Trespass under Texas Penal Code 30.05.

Denton says that Lamb told him in transport, “I’m writing the police report and I’m going to make it as colorful as [expletive].” During the “tirade,” as Denton described it, the officer repeatedly advised that he is “very active in [his] church.”

“You know who looks like the bad guy now,” he stated. “All you had to do is leave” and go to another spot.

Denton told Christian News Network that as he was later placed behind bars, Lamb said, “Man to man, you shouldn’t be preaching there [at the drag festival]. Just tell them Jesus loves them and move on.”

Denton still recalls the last remarks from Lamb: “I can’t say what we did tonight was wrong, but I can’t say arresting you was right.”

After spending seven hours in jail, Denton was released on $300 bond. Denton says that he was able to share the gospel with others during the time that he was incarcerated, and witnessed a receptivity to his message. One man, a college student, expressed remorse and thanked God for “disciplining” him.

“The gospel is good news for anyone who has ears to hear, whether it’s a drag queen or a self-righteous good citizen,” Denton said. “God saves sinners, among whom every Christian was once chief. There’s hope for the people at the drag event because God is mighty to save and ‘salvation is of the Lord.'”

Officer Lamb could not be reached for comment on the arrest. A trial date has not yet been set.

It looks like Officer Lamb needs to be educated in First Amendment rights.

American Cultural Christianity strikes again…is it any wonder America is rotting from within? And no less with the aid of hirelings in pulpits across America and blind congregationalists…Biblical Christianity preaches’ Repentance towards God and Faith towards the Lord Jesus Christ’. Biblical Christianity first confronts mankind with its sinful state and separation from a Just, Holy, Righteous Creator. The bible never leads with ‘the love of God’. You’ll never understand the love of God until you understand the judgment of God. You’ll never know the peace of God until you know the condemnation….messing with God’s order results in fraudulent Christianity…fraudulent Christianity results in a nation where 73% profess Christianity but demand God caters to, reverences, and blesses its vile lifestyle choices and lawlessness. Not gonna happen. As we have made God irrelevant in American Christianity (and the world rejoices) so shall He make us irrelevant to Him…and the fact that it doesn’t scare this nation (ESPECIALLY those professing they know Him) when it is already being left to its own devices and is harvesting the fruit shows how in trouble ‘we’ are.

  • Maxwell Edison

The officer was violating Denton’s constitutional rights. Period. NO sidewalk is EVER private property as they are not put there by the property owner, but rather the local municipality.

Expect the charges to be thrown out before trial. Then maybe Denton will do the right thing and sue the officer for false arrest.

  • Off Shore

If this preacher was indeed on a sidewalk this city and cop will be offering a nice cash settlement very soon. I’m not really sure who needs more prayers… a poor cop that isn’t smart enough to keep the law of the land or drag queens that will end up in Hell for eternity if they don’t change. My bet is both at this point. Keep preaching brother!

    • ppp777

Preach to reprobates ? , forget it .

  • Nidalap

The law was on Denton’s side. Politics was on the arresting officer’s side.
We’ll see the latter trump the former more and more often as the fear of God continues to depart the land…

    • Rumplestiltskin

I see you used the overarching operative word, “Fear”. Is that how you want to live your life, in fear? Maybe you haven’t read your bible. Your Gods, (yes plural) were closer to psychopaths than you’d want to believe. Now days we have weapons that will put those psychos in their place when it is needed.

But more than that, you truly need to understand just who and what your Gods really are. A hint; They are not at all what you believe them to be my friend and humanity is waking up to that fact and are looking to look those Gods in the eye.

      • tomnchrist

I am also waiting for that day!
And I bet you will not look my God in the eye, as you will realize He is the supreme law, and you will be ashamed of your deeds.
I agree you will have the political power to arrest and even kill some of God’s Believers (the time of the anti-Christ) who you will have to summit to as your Lord and then you will truly know what a Psychopath is. The street preacher was showing you the only way out.

        • Rumplestiltskin

OMG another Cuck who has sold his soul and has not idea who he sold it to. You do realize you are suffering from “The Stockholm Syndrome don’t you ?

          • tomnchrist

No, it’s you who have bought into a lie.
A miserable lie with an even more miserable eternal life.
Your OMG is the cuck, and enjoys watching you sell your eternal soul to him.

        • Rumplestiltskin

I can see you are just going to love your incarceration as a slave to your Gods. I do not fear any God, lease of all, yours. I have a set of balls my friend, maybe you should grow a set and see how it feels to be a man instead of a mouse.

          • LynnRH

and our Creator God created those balls for ya, by the way.

      • David Collins

Yeah, the world will attack Jesus Christ when He returns, and He will destroy those attackers with merely a word from His lips. The massive armies of antichrist will be humuliated and vaporized where they stand. Then, you and the rest will see Who the True God is, and not your psychopathic god, satan.

        • Rumplestiltskin

You see folks that type of self righteousness cannot be fought against because he is so entrenched in his belief system he can’t think outside the box and any who suggest he does is considers the devil incarnate.

YOU BROTHER ARE GOING TO GET A WAKE-UP CALL AND IT WILL SHOCK YOU TO THE CORE.

Logic escapes this type of mind-set. because it would reveal the truth which they do not want to accept. Our originators and progenitors were and are not Gods you pea brain, and using that amateurish rebuttal tells me that you also have a low IQ because you believe that thinking is too difficult.

          • David Collins

Truth stings the satanically deluded like rumpled suit here. You are actually describing yourself, rumpled suit.

          • Rumplestiltskin

For you two, Lynn and Orthodox, maybe you should look up the term, “The Stockholm Syndrome”, and see if it does not apply. You have essentially sold your souls and you have no idea as to whom !

          • Orthodox

You should look up the word ‘masochist’. That is what you devil worshippers are. You defy the God Who died for your sins, so you could be forgiven and go to heaven, and instead, choose the god of this world, satan, who uses and abuses, lies and fools masochists like you. You like being beaten up by him.

          • LynnRH

Oh I know who owns MY soul, Satan, and it isn’t you. You’ve tried to many times in my life to own my soul. But you could just never promise me what my awesome Creator God could promise me. You lost.

          • LynnRH

The only box i’m going to think from is God’s box (his Holy Bible). And i’m not apologetic or ashamed in the least. Proud of it.

Back at cha: YOU BROTHER ARE GOING TO GET A WAKE-UP CALL AND IT WILL SHOCK YOU TO THE CORE!

      • David Collins

said the satanic operative. sounds like rumpled suit believes in aliens and that they are the alleged creators of humanity. He has bought into the satanic lie.Your puny ‘weapons’ will be useless against the God of all, Jesus Christ, when He returns. The weapons of your god, antichrist, will be useless and futile.

        • Jay Dee

Oh Please… Keep WAITING for Jebus to return..
2100 YEARS you twerps have been waiting to be saved (again).
If he had “saved” you the FIRST TIME, then WHY does he need to “return”.
Your FAIRY TALE is full of holes that just get bigger with every DRONE “Believer”..
Xtianity is a CULT of DOPES!

          • David Collins

Thank you for proving that Prophecy is true and therefore the Bible is true:
            New International Version
            2 Peter 3:3-6

Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.” But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water. By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.

          • Jay Dee

Keep WAITING your pathetic and ONLY life away.
            Good Luck.

          • LynnRH

And keep enjoying your pathetic and ONLY life. It’s not going to last. And you aren’t going to like where you are spending eternity. But to each his own. Your choice. And if you don’t like what we Christians have to say on this Christian website feel free to leave us. We don’t need your two cents worth.

        • Rumplestiltskin

OMG shut the “F” up you ignorant fool because you have so bought into your religious idiocy you can’t even think for yourself, and the reason I mentioned you among many have such low IQs you can’t even fathom the nature of our humanity.

          • Orthodox

The Lord Jesus rebuke you satan.

          • LynnRH

Sounds like Satan’s legions are definitely on this one! Yes, the Lord Jesus rebuke you satan.

      • GustAdlph

Hello Rumple, whether my Gods are psychos or not, the preacher still has the right to preach on a public sidewalk.

        • ppp777

Not according to satan and his disiples

  • Etranger

It’s tough. I mean, who wants these radical religious people all over the place disrupting the peace. It would be different if they were protesting something but just annoying people who are going to see a show? I suppose they have the right, but how annoying. Imagine someone standing outside this guy’s favorite restaurant harassing folks or outside his church. Guy probably should not have been arrested, but he definitely is not a good person based on his actions.

    • Maxwell Edison

It’s tough. I mean, who wants these radical religious people all over the place disrupting the peace.

How is exercising his constitutional rights disturbing the peace? Would you have said the same thing if it had been the exact opposite?

      • Etranger

Didn’t make it past that sentence huh? I am for freedom of speech. Does not mean he is probably still an annoying jerk. Imagine someone shooting crap at him as he goes to church or something. They have a right to but it still means they are a jerk. And it is disturbing to have someone blathering on as you are just entering a theater.

        • Maxwell Edison

Didn’t make it past that sentence huh?

Back when I was in junior high school, we were taught when writing paragraphs the main idea should be contained therein. Yours was in the first sentence: A contempt for people who talk about Jesus and salvation in public.

Have you even stopped to actually listen to them?

          • Etranger

Yes, he is disrupting the peace and that is my main idea. You started linking that to the constitution. Back when I was in elementary school, we were taught to remain on topic and not to make an argument that had nothing to do with the argument which one is countering.

I have shown no “contempt for people who talk about Jesus in public”. I encounter many of them on a daily basis actually (being in a somewhat big city). I listen to many. I have met many of these folks, too, outside of gay venues or outside theaters where there might be a gay-themed topic – heck even encountered the WBC on three occasions in Indiana. They were never nice people when they were in those places. Have you ever stopped and actually listened to them? Some of the things they say are horrible.

          • Maxwell Edison

Yes, he is disrupting the peace and that is my main idea.

Uh, no. Just because you do not agree doesn’t make it so.

You started linking that to the constitution. Back when I was in elementary school,

When were you taught the Constitution? The First Amendment? Free speech? Freedom of religion? Any of these things ring a bell?

            Hello? McFly?

          • Etranger

I never said he didn’t have a right to do this. Oh my god, READ.

          • Maxwell Edison

If you are saying he was disrupting the peace, what else could you have meant?

            Good heavens, think!

          • Etranger

That he was disruptive. Plain language. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a constitutional right. You are not serious right? I mean no one can be that bad a reader and thinker…

          • Maxwell Edison

Only because I don’t agree with you.

          • Etranger

Ah okay. You make up stuff because you don’t agree. Got it

          • Maxwell Edison

            Awful troll.

          • Etranger

Naw, just an honest decent human…

          • Maxwell Edison

Not if you don’t know how to leave Christians alone.

          • Etranger

            ???

          • LynnRH

If it matches what God says in His Holy Bible then they are in the right about what they say. But if anyone has a problem with that they will be certainly welcomed to take it up with Him when they see Him face to face.

    • LynnRH

Just doing what God has told all of us Christians to do; to tell all of the Good News. And there may have sometime or other and still may yet be guy (people) outside his favorite restaurant or outside his church being annoying with messages about Abortion Rights, LGBT rights, etc. LOL.

      • Etranger

I think we know he has never been subjected to any harassment going to church or a restaurant. What is funny is that these folks were going to a play. There was absolutely no justification for even preaching to them. It is not like the theater was harming people or molesting children or any other crime that would make protestingbit admirable.

        • LynnRH

He was simply preaching God’s promise of Salvation for those who will turn away from their sin and accept Jesus as Savior. Whether the play was the DragQueen Christmas or just a simple family-oriented theater show Denton has every right to preach God’s Word. That is what God has ordained Christians to do, ” And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” Mark 16:15-16.

      • Etranger

Btw god didn’t tell you to presch at gay people that they are bad.

        • LynnRH

God says to spread the Word to all the lost. That include the gay people.

          • Etranger

Oh definitely – I know many gay people who have “heard the word” and are Christians! The word is not what folks like Denton preach though (assuming he was doing the usual anti-gay message so many street ‘preachers’ engage in).

          • LynnRH

We don’t know if he had a specific sin he was talking about. But sin is sin. And gay people who continue on in their gay lifestyle (just embrace it) instead of repenting and turning from their sin are not really Christians. You are not truly saved until you have accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior and have repented and turned from their sin. We are still not perfect as long as we are in this God-forsaken world, but we are asked by God to sin no more. That means to do your very best to stay away from the sin you know as sin. How you know what is a sin is to read the Holy Bible.

  • Michael C

Based on this account, it sounds as if Denton’s rights were violated. In this country, obnoxious people are free to stand in public and drive people away from Christ with their words. That’s their right.

Whether or not events transpired exactly as described here is difficult to say and I try not to form opinions without checking multiple sources and hearing differing accounts. In this case, I wasn’t able to find any information about this elsewhere. Did Ryan Denton bring this story directly to this publication? I can’t find any other accounts. This article makes mention of a video. Was Denton video recording? Were other people recording the event? Is there a reason this video has not been shared?

    • Lark.62

Yes. It is amazing how hard christians work to make their religion seem as unpleasant as humanly possible.

How many people walked away thinking “thanks for the reminder to never become like them.”

And add all the people here who are silent week after week when the first amendment rights of non christians are violated. But now, suddenly, they care about freedom of speech and freedom of religion when the rights of a member of their group are (or appear to be) violated.

Why would anyone want what these people have?

      • Michael C

Unfortunately, the most vocal and visible members of a group are often not representative of the group as a whole.

      • LynnRH

“thanks for the reminder to never become like them”
Christians are not perfect just because they became Christians. They are just saved Christians. Yes many of them have made mistakes in the way they have tried to tell others about Jesus. Some people become saved and then they don’t “grow.” People need to “grow” in their faith and knowledge of Jesus but many after being saved won’t enter the door of a church again for the rest of their lives. Yes, you can do Bible study alone too instead of with a church family (its not God’s recommendation) but many people who get saved won’t even do that. Instead they just get all fired up and run their mouths about things they don’t even know what God says about it. In the Bible God does say, ” But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment.” Matthew 12:36-37. God doesn’t want people to turn away from Jesus and His hope for salvation because someone refused to study His Word and learn His Truth and instead just got fired up and run off at the mouth.

        • Lark.62

People who are christian are exactly the same as all other people. No better. No worse.

Some christians when promoting their world view exude all the logic and graciousness of Amway salesmen. They are unpleasant to be around.

The fact that they are convinced that they are absolutely right only adds to the unpleasantness.

If, as you say, some people don’t grow after being saved, what does that say about the power of your claimed deity?

          • LynnRH

It is a saved person’s responsibility to “grow in God’s Word.” They actually have to take time to read and study God’s Word. God wants you to spend time with Him. Doesn’t mean you’ve lost your salvation if you don’t. For Salvation God says accept Jesus as your Savior and Lord of your life. Now how is someone going to give Him Lordship over their life and turn from their sins if they don’t bother to even study to see what ARE the sins against Him? Jesus taught the importance of believer’s to come together and study His Word. How can we become disciples for Him to the lost if we don’t study His Word?

“People who are Christian are exactly the same as all other people. No better. No worse.”
As I’ve said before no we (saved) are not perfect. our responsibliltiy is to spend time in His Word and in prayer in order to “grow” and know what is sin against Him so we can do our best to stay true to Him.
We (saved) are still sinners in this God-forsaken world but we are saved sinners. When we get to Heaven we will not have the sinful temptations we have in this world.

“Some Christians when promoting their world view exude all the logic and graciousness of Amway salesmen. They are unpleasant to be around”
Well i’m glad you didn’t say ALL Christians were like this. Lol. This tells me at least their are some you have run across that are at least pleasant to be around. If those of the former were not truly speaking God’s Word and with a true sense of love for you then I do apologize on their behalf. As I said we are not perfect. just saved.
But I also know that until a person is ready to accept God’s Word and promise of Salvation (or at least hear about it) they will be uncomfortable about the topic. God doesn’t force you to love Him. He wants your genuine love. Totally your choice.

“The fact that they are convinced that they are absolutely right only adds to the upleasantness.”
If a Christian is just stating what God says in His Word (Holy Bible) then yes they (Christian) do feel they are absolutely right. We do believe the Holy Bible is His true Word. You don’t have to. Totally your choice. If you want to believe our origins come from a fish in the sea or due to some “big bang” you can do that. Your choice. We Chrisitains are just doing what God said for us to do in order to warn the lost before it is eternally too late. But again, your choice. You don’t have to listen to those that want to share His Word with you anymore than I have to listen to an unbelievers unpleasant statements. You don’t even have to be on a Christian website such as this trying to convert the saved back into the lost anymore than I have to be on an atheist’s website trying to convert the lost to be saved. Totally your choice.

    • Maxwell Edison

In this country, obnoxious people are free to stand in public and drive people away from Christ with their words.

What was Denton saying that made him obnoxious and could drive people from Christ?

And if you are going to say Jesus never had a problem with men dressing as women, let alone exaggerated versions, I want you to quote the Bible, chapter and verse.

      • Michael C

What was Denton saying that made him obnoxious and could drive people from Christ?

I don’t know what he was saying. I would be interested in seeing that video.

And if you are going to say Jesus never had a problem with…

I don’t believe I’ve said anything about your religion’s teachings concerning drag performers. That’s not a topic of great interest to me nor is it terribly relevant to my original comment.

        • Maxwell Edison

I don’t know what he was saying.

So you are making an assumption based on your hate. What else is new?

          • Michael C

If Denton was being obnoxious and pushing people away from Christ, as I have read he has done in the past, he would be within his rights to do so.

          • LynnRH

If he was pushing people away from Christ in the past it was more than likely because those people want to stay in their sin. They like it.

    • LynnRH

Yes, when a person continues to want to stay in their sin because they like it they will feel like someone is being obnoxious when this someone is doing what God has ordained Christians to do; which is to tell of the Good News of the Salvation through Jesus Christ. Those that like their sin and want to stay in it will be offended.

  • Maxwell Edison

I should also point out that for Criminal Trespass to have occurred, Denton would have to be engaging in an unlawful activity on private property. Denton was speaking about salvation in opposition to a drag queen event on a public sidewalk adjacent to said event.

There were no laws broken here. And the ironically named Lamb knows it.

  • Lydia Church

Those at that event are the ones who need to hear it most! So why go elsewhere? Yes, sin is a sin. Just like “hot” drinks are “hot” (paper coffee cups from Jack in the Box a few years back).
Persecution against Christians is on the rise, as we see. But of course the lgbtqrsxyz feel ‘persecuted’ against even if there is just one righteous Christian breathing somewhere on the globe…!

    • Etranger

“Those at that event are the ones who need to hear it most! So why go elsewhere? ”

How can you possibly know this?

“Persecution against Christians is on the rise, as we see. But of course the lgbtqrsxyz feel ‘persecuted’ against even if there is just one righteous Christian breathing somewhere on the globe…!”

Since Denton got arrested, I agree he was persecuted. But so were the attendees (neither one of us has any idea whether they were LGBT or not).

      • Coach

        The attendees were persecuted?

        • Etranger

They had to listen to his drivel. Trust me that is persecution lol

          • LynnRH

They didn’t have to listen. They could have stuck their fingers in their ears. Good grief! I know not everyone knows this or at least wants to believe this, but so far…….even Christians have the freedom of speech.

          • Etranger

I never said Christians don’t have freedom of speech. Good grief.

          • Etranger

Out of curiosity if a Muslim stood outside your business all day saying everyone who went into your should was an infidel that should be killed or eternally damned, would you just tell your customers to put fingers in their eyes? Just wondering. I think we all know you would complain to the authorities. If you say you wouldn’t you are lying.

          • LynnRH

Its still Freedom of Speech. And yes I would not like it because it would offend me just as if someone who wanted to rant and rave about Abortion Rights, LGBT rights or any thing else anti-Christian. But how could I have the authorities do anything at all since they would be within their rights? And yes, I would have to tell my customers to put fingers in their ears because we have not right to interfere with their freedom of speech. But no I wouldn’t like it. I’m sure God doesn’t like any preaching/teaching of anything that is against His Word as well. But anyway…….He will have the final say-so and at that time no one will be able to “mouth back” about it. It will be final.

          • Etranger

There is not carte blanche freedom of speech. There is such a thing as disturbing the peace. You lied. You would definitely call the police on the guy harassing your customers (and probably hurting your business.)

          • LynnRH

I don’t lie. And the only way I would call the police is if they were actually harming (bodily harm) my customers. You don’t have any right to decide for me what I would do.

          • Etranger

The police can get involved before bodily harm occurs. You need to know the law!

          • LynnRH

Well when I come across a situation that I need to know more about the law I will look into it. Thanks for the tip.

          • Etranger

My pleasure! We all need to know our rights. (Like the good people who called the police to get the preacher away from the theater…he was a public nuisance).

          • LynnRH

But didn’t that take his freedom of speech right away? or is that only the rights of those who want to promote sins against God?

          • Etranger

Not at all. As we all know, the government cannot take away your freedom of speech, but freedom of speech does not mean you can say whatever you want wherever you want whenever you want.

          • LynnRH

Where is that at? I didn’t read that part I guess.

          • Etranger

Just common knowledge I would assume – based on centuries of court cases. Try mouthing off at a TSA agent and see where that gets you for instance.

          • LynnRH

common knowledge is not good enough when we are talking about a persons freedom of speech which in the constitution. So if it’s not actually written as part of the law and someone is arrested for speaking about something and not causing violence then their rights are being violated.

          • Etranger

I tried to post a link but it won’t let me 🙁 There is established law on restrictions of freedom of speech.

          • LynnRH

so if you have found it can you just copy and paste or something to show you are right about it?

          • Etranger

Just some examples from the law article Freedom of Speech and Press:
            Exceptions to the First Amendment
            Kathleen Ann Ruane
            Legislative Attorney
            September 8, 2014

The First Amendment to the United States Constitution provides that “Congress shall make no law … abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press.” This language restricts government’s ability to constrain the speech of citizens. The prohibition on abridgment of the freedom of speech is not absolute. Certain types of speech may be prohibited outright. Some types of speech may be more easily constrained than others. Furthermore, speech may be more easily regulated depending upon the location at which it takes place.
Even speech that enjoys the most extensive First Amendment protection may be subject to “regulations of the time, place, and manner of expression which are content-neutral, are narrowly tailored to serve a significant government interest, and leave open ample alternative channels of communication.” Furthermore, even speech that enjoys the most extensive First Amendment protection may be restricted on the basis of its content if the restriction passes “strict scrutiny” (i.e., if the government shows that the restriction serves “to promote a compelling interest” and is “the least restrictive means to further the articulated interest”).
In Chaplinsky, the Court upheld a statute which prohibited a person from addressing “any offensive, derisive or annoying word to any other person who is lawfully in any street or other public place,” calling “him by any offensive or derisive name,” or making “any noise or exclamation in his presence and hearing with the intent to deride, offend or annoy him, or to prevent him from pursuing his lawful business or occupation.”21 The state court construed the statute as forbidding only those expressions that “have a direct tendency to cause acts of violence by the person to whom, individually, the remark [was] addressed.”22 Given the limited scope of application, the Supreme Court held that the statute at issue did not proscribe protected expression.23

          • LynnRH

I don’t know if i’m smart enough to have understood all of that completely. But I still can’t see how a Christian preaching God’s Word on a public street outside a DragQueen Christmas show is any more against the law than people who are for Abortion rights, etc making their voices/opinions heard in front of Faith-based Pregnancy alternative facilities are. And of course there are other examples. That’s just one.

          • Etranger

I do agree that we don’t know what this ‘preacher’ actually said. It must have been pretty offensive (I.e., not just the word of god) for LGBT folks to complain. They are pretty used to hearing nuts go on and on about how awful they are. Can you imagine what that must be like? Very annoying but people go on about living.

          • LynnRH

There are nuts of all kinds. Including those that promote sins against God which includes abortion, gay marriage, etc. If a person is simply stating what God says, he is not a nut. And God will get that straightened out one day when we face him.

          • And nor does it stop your neighbour from calling you a jerk.

          • Coach

No thank you, I refuse to trust liers.

          • Etranger

            Lol good one!

      • LynnRH

How were the attendees persecuted? They weren’t arrested were they? No we don’t know if they were LGBT or not. But what were they doing even wanting to go to a God-forsaken event like that? If that’s what they were there for. So far as I could see from the articale Denton was the only one persecuted there.

        • Etranger

I think they were there to see some play. You are right they were not ‘persecuted’.

    • LynnRH

      Exactly!

  • Vince

Guess who imposed “speech codes” on colleges?
I’ll give you a hint: it wasn’t Christians; it wasn’t conservatives.

Liberalism is fascistic at its core. They talk “diversity” but they don’t mean it. A place that can tolerate A Drag Queen Christmas can tolerate one Christian speaking his mind.

Freedom of speech means tolerating things you don’t like.

  • Honesty Counts

The fact is that as long as you are not putting people’s lives in mortal danger, anyone has the right to speak their mind.
The U.S. Constitution gives everyone the right to speak their mind, even if the other person doesn’t want to hear it. It is called, Freedom Of Speech.

  • FredKapelski

Officer Lamb disregarded his responsibility to enforce the 1st Amendment. Just more leftist, socialist, tyranny.

    • LynnRH

      exactly!

  • WoundedChristian

    This country is doomed.

  • Dick Tracy

I hope, as the evangelist was being lead away he didn’t look back. He could have been turned into a pillar of salt.

  • Roddy’s_All_Out_of_Bubblegum

What is it about preaching Jesus makes those kind of people feel threatened?

If some person on the street were preaching “pink elephants are your salvation” or “We must make offerings to the Volcano god to make him happy” then the snowflakes would just laugh and move on. If some crazed person was on the sidewalk preaching anything else like “Everyone must reduce their carbon footprint!” or screaming “Everyone must resist Donald Trump!” then the snowflakes would have no problem.
But mention Jesus then they react like Dracula reacts to a crucifix.
To them if Jesus is imaginary then why feel so threatened?

    • Michael C

What is it about preaching Jesus makes those kind of people feel threatened?

I’ll accept this as an honest question (despite the “snowflake” jab) and do my best to answer it with an open heart.

There is a (very common) version of Christianity that has done, and continues to do, a great deal of harm to many, many gay people. Under the guise of Christianity, the US has a history of oppression gay people. Gay people were rejected by their family and friends, fired from their jobs, harassed, imprisoned, institutionalized, tortured, and castrated. Fortunately, we’re slowly learning from our mistakes but this history exists and it’s effects still linger.

Most of us spent the early part of our lives feeling great shame and in many cases self-hate over what our religious leaders taught us about ourselves. Not only were we taught to fear eternal damnation but the threat of losing our family, loved ones, and support networks was ever looming and actually a reality for many. …all because of this particular brand of Christianity.

As we attempt to live out our lives equally in the public sphere, it is almost exclusively Christian organizations attempting to use the government to stifle our rights. It is almost exclusively Christian organizations who are working tirelessly to ensure that gay people aren’t protected from discrimination in employment, housing, and public accommodations, weren’t able to marry, aren’t allowed health care, aren’t granted the same legal rights with their children, and aren’t even included in bully-prevention materials in elementary and high schools. Not even bullying prevention!

Many of us have spent our lives being bullied or otherwise maligned and mistreated simply because we’re gay. It happens in school, it happens in the workplace, it happens in our home lives, it happens when we’re out in public. I can begin to feel that nowhere is safe. We can’t even go to a drag show without being told that we’re disgusting and worthy of eternal pain and torture.

That’s why the imaginary Jesus can be so threatening to some gay people. It is because he is used as an actual weapon to do actual harm to us on a regular basis. Nobody’s every used pink elephants or volcano gods to cause me pain.

      • dan from ohio

Since it appears you have heard the good news of forgiveness have you repented and denied the lusts of the flesh or do you still sin in homosexuality? Remember Jesus does love you but live according to what he said,GO AND SIN NO MORE…..

        • Michael C

what an interesting reaction to my comment.

          Have a merry Christmas.

          • dan from ohio

Same to you,Merry Christmas the Lord has come.

          • dan from ohio

Oh I understand what you said and meant, some people simple like what their doing or living the way they want and don,t like the message of the gospel when it states a certain lifestyle or act is sinful, they don,t want to hear it.Like the words the truth hurts really do hurt but must be told if one is to recieve forgiveness and repent…..merry christmas

      • Roddy’s_All_Out_of_Bubblegum

Some Christian groups and the lgbtqandwhateverelseletters crowd are certainly at odds at issues you have mentioned. Any harassment or abuse should not be condoned I don’t care who you are. I hate to hear people use the word that starts with F and rhymes with maggot. That is hateful and unChristian.
However, Many Christians feel increasingly bullied by gay activisim and are fed up. Particularly freedom of speech issues. This preacher is a good example. According to him he was simply telling others about Jesus. He wasn’t causing public disorder. He wasn’t attacking or preventing anyone from proceeding anywhere. Even if you feel threatened by rightwing Christians as a whole you can’t say this particular preacher was intimidating anyone unlawfully.
Look at the CEO of Mozilla. He was forced to resign because he believed in traditional marriage. Curt Schilling fired for opposing laws allowing men to use same bathrooms as little girls.
These are only a few examples of how bullying is somehow accepted on people who have traditional moral views.

        • LynnRH

And I agree with you Roddy. I don’t believe our long-suffering and patient God would want us to behave in an evil way to the lost. Jesus himself wasn’t. He simply taught about the love, forgiveness, and salvation. He knew and still knows our world is full of sin; all kinds of sin including homosexuality. He knew He had to finish His mission here on earth (preach, teach, die and be raised back to life) if there was ever going to be any hope for us at all. He knew we couldn’t help ourselves. We are born with a sin nature and are bent to sin against Him. All because of that most hateful, evil, temptor named Satan himself. So Jesus just taught the sinner to “go and sin no more.” So that includes even homosexuals. He didn’t say “oh by the way, homosexuals (or any kind of sexual sin) is excluded from this request to go and sin no more.

    • Crystal Walker

The Cross of Jesus Christ is still an offense!

    • LynnRH

Exactly. Well and you hit it on the nail head when you said “But mention Jesus then they react like Dracula reacts to a crucifix.” LOL. That’s because that’s the way Satan reacts when confronted by Jesus.

    FREE SPEECH RIGHTS

& COURT RULINGS RELATING TO STREET PREACHING

    I. Open air preaching is protected by the United States Constitution: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

II. We have the right to pass out literature, preach, and display signs on public areas (Coates v. Cincinnati 402 U.S. 611 / Edwards v. S. Carolina, 372 U.S. 299 / Furr v. Town of Swansea, F. Supp. 1543).

III. We have the right to exercise our religion and speak in all quintessential public forums (Frisby vs. Schultz, 487 U.S. 474 / U.S. v. Grace, 461 U.S. 171, 176).

IV. We have a “guaranteed access” to streets, parks, and other ‘traditional public forum” and mere inconvenience to the government will not outweigh our free speech interests (Hague v. C.I.O. 307 U.S. 496).

    V. Our freedom of speech may not be prohibited merely because it offends some listeners (Cantwell v. Connecticut, 310 U.S. 296 / Simon & Shuster v. New York State Crime Victims Bd, 502 U.S. 105 / N.Y. Ties v. Sullivan, 376 U.S. 254).

VI. A city may not consider the listener’s reaction when permitting free speech activity (Forsyth County v. The Nationalist Movement, 505 U.S. 123).

VII. Hecklers do not have veto power over a speaker’s right of free speech but Police must control a crowd rather than arrest the speaker in order to maintain order (Cox. v. Louisiana, 379 U.S. 536).

VIII. We have the right to be loud enough to be heard (Saia v. New York, 334 U.S. 1943).

IX. We have the right to be protected by law enforcement if the crowd is offended by what we are preaching and becomes hostile (Hedges v. W.C.U.S.D. No. 118, et al. 9F.3d 1295).

    X. Permits are not allowed to be used to restrict a speaker’s right of free expression and permits may not be used as a prior restraint on free speech (Kunz v. New York, 340 U.S. 290).

XI. A free speech lawsuit is a Federal case and allows us to sue Policemen and guards in their official capacity and as individuals (Freedom Restoration Act, Title 42, Section 2000aa.).

XII. A freedom of speech lawsuit will subject them to pay our damages and all our attorney fees (42 U.S.C. §§ 1983 and 1988).

      Thanks for this! Copying
      and pasting!

  • Steven C Millhorn

The key to watch for, is if this goes to trial……if the PD-Prosecutor drops the charges and returns his dough, then you know…..the arrest was illegal and they were just pacifying the gay militants. Which also means that real, accurate and legal law enforcement has gone (goon) by the wayside.

  • Chet

Sure, just tell them “God loves them” and then they can continue on in their sin to their own eternal utter destruction. And one “active” in the ‘church”. Seems to be the “church” of what’s happening now… Further, those painted up men sure do make for some real hard looking make believe women, whew!

  • David Collins

That cop will give an account to God for ‘doing his job’. We must obey God rather than man. Unfortunately, this alleged Christian cop chose the god of this world, Satan, and his rules, over the true God, and arrested this preacher. Jesus said ‘he who denies Me before the world, I shall deny before My Father and the Holy Angels”. Woe to you, Mr. Lamb. Woe.

  • Alleged-Comment

He did it peacefully, not like Moslems who practice their preachings “piecefooly”. Which one do you want? You stupid Americans??

    • Etranger

Neither is the only rational answer.

      • Alleged-Comment

Which would you rather get cut to pieces by? The sword of truth or by the sword of a Moslem?

        • Etranger

False equivalence. I have, in my 40 years on this earth, never heard a Muslim preach to me, nor wield a sword lol. I have heard many Christians preach, but they are not preaching any truth. Either way, I prefer to run my errands, attend concerts and theater, go to work, etc. without either religion preaching to me.

But back to your original question. Neither. Only answer.

          • Alleged-Comment

You have chosen! Then the sword of TRUTH will cut you asunder.

Matt 24:38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,

          • Etranger

Huh? As long as I avoid religious nuts like you I should be able to live in peace!!

The constitution cannot interfere with our rights to Contract. This is what the powers that be are doing via presumptions, social security, drivers license, U.S. citizenship ect. They are contracts, you have to rescind any and all signatures and contracts in writing prior to any incident. You cannot serve two masters, follow gods law, not the Fiction government. Fiction is a lie, it never happened. We have been fooled for far too long. Don’t believe me? Ask Jesus to show you the truth… God Bless.

Well how “tolerant” of the Gay Community ! I applaud their upholding “Freedom of Speech” !

How is this possible in a Free Country? No one was inciting to violence. Is Free Speech now against the law ?

Fellow Christians, The Bible tells us what to do. READ IT!
    MATTHEW 10: 13-15
…13 If the home is worthy, let your peace rest on it; if it is not, let your peace return to you. 14 And if anyone will not welcome you or heed your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town. 15 Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.…

You were meant to be arrested. You reached more people in jail than you did at the festival. But who knows, out of the ninety and nine that were cheering when you were arrested, there might have been that one lost sheep that heard you.
