The National Atheist Party has announced that it has canceled its upcoming convention due to a lack of sufficient funds.

The political organization states that it had planned to host its second annual rally in October of this year in Boston, Massachusetts, but  the lack of ample donations threatened the financial stability of the party.

“NAPCON 2012 was supposed to be our biggest and best public event; our chance to show the U.S. that we could fund and organize a large, noteworthy and impressive ‘Secular Summit’ that would attract media buzz and even more interested members and donations,” National Atheist Party president Troy Boyle explained. “The reality is that we can’t. The donations simply aren’t there and if we went ahead with the event as planned, it would bankrupt us.”

It further outlined that in addition to deficient funding from both donors and sponsors, a number of those who were to help with the convention backed out.

“Suffice it to say that too many critical players have backed out of the event, and too few donations and sponsors have committed to supporting it,” Boyle continued. “Whether that is our failure to market the event properly or we simply didn’t have enough seed money to insure its success is moot.”

The conference was to feature a variety of secular and humanist speakers, musical entertainment and free prizes to attendees.

Boyle says that the party will now focus on next year’s event instead and will refund money to those that had purchased tickets.

“I am disappointed and disheartened, certainly, as I’m sure you all are, but I’m also committed to learning the lessons of this ‘failure to launch,” he stated. “We will use those lessons to make our next event appropriately sized and manageable.”

The National Atheist Party, while a political venture, is not yet a “full-fledged” third party organization. However, the group says that it is seeking to become one.

According to the party’s website, “The National Atheist Party is a Constitutional movement dedicated to the preservation of the Founding Fathers’ vision of a secular nation.”

“We are an American political party, uniquely formed as a true, constitutional movement, reaching out to all who seek a secular government as outlined in the First Amendment to our United States Constitution,” it states. “We demand emancipation from the religious dogma that has infiltrated our government and has unfairly influenced political decisions and policy making.”
