PHILADELPHIA — During the trial of ‘House of Horrors’ abortionist Kermit Gosnell, prosecutors called a Planned Parenthood abortionist who admitted to killing tens of thousands of children as an “expert witness” against Gosnell. The abortionist’s testimony was widely under-reported and little known to the public at the time, although some outlets discussed the matter briefly or in passing.
Charles Benjamin is one of four abortionists left in Philadelphia since Gosnell was arrested in 2011. According to reports, prosecutors called Benjamin as a witness to discuss how an abortion facility is to “operate properly.”
Benjamin told the court that he has performed 40,000 abortions over the past 30 years, and currently works at both at Planned Parenthood and Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia.
During his testimony, Benjamin claimed that his practice was more reputable than Gosnell’s as he was more careful about how he ended the lives of unborn children. Benjamin testified that the abortion procedures he conducts at the Far Northeast Planned Parenthood are assisted by registered nurses as opposed to the untrained staff that Gosnell instructed to administer medication. He also stated that Gosnell utilized 500 times more digoxin, the drug used by abortionists nationwide to stop the heartbeat of the baby, than is common practice.
Additionally, Benjamin told the court that he avoids the “legal” late-term abortion limit by three weeks, offering abortions up to 21 weeks, or just over 5 months. He stated that while Gosnell performed all abortions at his clinic on Lancaster Avenue, Benjamin rather conducts abortion procedures past 17 weeks at Einstein Medical Center, a local hospital in the city. Benjamin works at the hospital as a doctor of Osteopathy to train resident medical students.
As Gosnell had been originally raided for an illegal drug operation, Benjamin stated that his crash cart of medicine is inspected every month, but admitted that inspectors found that some drugs were tampered with or had been missing. He also noted that a woman died of sepsis, a condition where the body adversely reacts to germs or bacteria, but stated that the incident was at the hands of his partner.
However, one report notes that Benjamin was once sued by a 19-year-old girl who crossed state lines from Pennsylvania to New Jersey to obtain an abortion from Benjamin where parental consent laws are not as strict. The girl, known as “Sarah” in her lawsuit, said that a guidance counselor “arranged for the teen a secret abortion in neighboring New Jersey” in 1998, and was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress syndrome following the procedure.
“Sarah sued abortionist Charles Benjamin and the Cherry Hill Women’s Center in Cherry Hill, N.J.,” WORLD reports. “Her lawsuit alleged that Dr. Benjamin and his clinic should be held liable for violating Pennsylvania laws meant to protect her.”
However, on the evening before the trial, the two parties agreed on a financial settlement.
Benjamin appears on Planned Parenthood tax statements as raking in hundreds of thousands of dollars each year for his services. In 2010, he was listed as a “contract physician,” earning $329, 810 from the abortion industry.
While prosecutors brought in Benjamin as an example of the “good” abortionists in the city, others have conversely expressed horror.
“I find it ironic that Dr. Charles Benjamin, an abortionist, recently testified against Dr. Kermit Gosnell,” one blogger wrote. “Talk about a career stained with blood, the blood of the innocent. The only difference between the … babies Gosnell is charged with killing and the forty thousand Benjamin has put to death is the time of the murders. You see, Dr. Benjamin kills them before 24 weeks of development, which is the legal limit in Pennsylvania. This is not just the ultimate hypocrisy, it is morally reprehensible.”
“One man is on trial for murder, while the other, who testifies against him, goes back to doing what he does best – killing the most vulnerable human beings in America,” they continued. “Dr. Benjamin should be on trial for murder as well as Dr. Gosnell.”
Some were sickened by the number of abortions performed by Benjamin.
“That’s a one man holocaust!” one commenter exclaimed, referring to the 40,000 babies killed during his career. “Disgusting!”
