Video Exposes ‘Bro-Choice’ Movement: Students Admit to Wanting Abortion to Use Women

BrochoiceBOULDER — An undercover video filmed at a university campus in Colorado recently exposed the belief system of the ‘bro-choice’ movement, a term for men who support abortion so that they can have sex without being responsible for fathering a child.

The official bro-choice movement was reportedly founded by Choice USA, which is a project of feminist Gloria Steinem. It is also a phrase first coined by comedian Sarah Silverman in a 2012 PSA on men and abortion. Choice USA’s website outlines the movement.

“If you stop a person on the street and ask them to describe what they think a reproductive justice activist looks like, chances are they are going to describe a woman,” it states. “[But] many men have realized the ways that reproductive oppression affects them and the ones they love, and how some traditional ideas of masculinity hurt everyone. However, there is still a long way to go in working out the relationship between men, masculinity, queerness and reproductive justice.”

The site also features a pledge for bro-choicers, which includes to ask women for consent before engaging in sexual activity and to fight for the ability of women to have an abortion.

However, a recent video from conservative reporter Caleb Bonham exposes the Bro-Choice movement even further, as he interviews numerous male students at the University of Colorado in Boulder. While students may believe that he is in support of the movement, Bonham states that he posed undercover to see if anyone would disagree.

“Essentially, my video reveals a rarely discussed but prevalent self-centered mindset among the college aged pro-choice crowd,” Bonham explained. “One that views abortion as a means to ensure materialistic responsibility-free sex.”

“Bro-choice is the right choice,” one young student states in the video, “because if you want to [have sex with a girl], which is what college is about, you best go with the bro-choice.”

“If women didn’t have access to abortion on demand, then you wouldn’t [have sex] as often,” Bonham tells another student.

“That’s the truth man,” he replies. “Definitely.”

“Bro-choice all the way,” states another student.

“I hear a Planned Parenthood rally is a pretty good place to pick up chicks,” Bonham says to a student who then begins to laugh.

“I’ve never tried it,” he replies. “I should though.”

Columnist Ben Sherman also outlined his concerns last week about the new 20-week abortion ban in Texas in an article entitled, Bro-Choice: How HB2 Hurts Texas Men Who Like Women.

“Your sex life is at stake,” he wrote. “Can you think of anything that kills the vibe faster than a woman fearing a back-alley abortion? Making abortion essentially inaccessible in Texas will add an anxiety to sex that will drastically undercut its joys. And don’t be surprised if casual sex outside of relationships becomes far more difficult to come by.”

However, some have found the bro-choice movement to be sickening and assert that it cheapens women into being considered nothing more than a sex object.

“Members of this new #brochoice movement are pathetic,” Tweeted Kirsten Powers of The Daily Beast. “Act like a man and take some responsibility for your choices.”

“Ladies, think about what Mr. Sherman and his ‘bro-choice’ buddies are really saying,” wrote Brenda Zurita of Concerned Women for America in an article entitled Bro-Choice for Irresponsible and Commitment-Phobic Men Everywhere. “They want to have sex with you but do not want to have children with you, nor do they want to bear any responsibility for having sex with you. You are merely there for their pleasure.”

“They want abortion-on-demand so they don’t have to become daddies with the women they are bedding. They will only be your ‘authentic ally’ when you need a ride to the abortion clinic, and even that seems doubtful, considering their laser-beam focus is on their sex lives and not your real-life situation,” Zurita continues. “They want to define this as ‘masculinity,’ but what it amounts to is perpetual adolescence.”
