DALLAS, Texas — A teenager recently surprised her Christian nurse as she began walking 11 days after becoming paralyzed from the waist down.
Bailey Murrill, 17, had been wrestling with her father at home earlier this month when she suddenly landed hard on her back and lost feeling in her legs. She was taken to Zale Lipshy University Hospital in Dallas for medical attention, but attempts to regain use of her legs were unsuccessful.
Murrill said that she held to her faith in God during this time.
“The whole time I had this attitude [that] I would leave it in His hands and be prepared for what He decided,” she told the New York Daily News.
Murrill soon also found a friend in one of her nurses who shared Murrill’s Christian faith and became an encouragement to her.
For 11 days, Murrill had no feeling in her legs despite attempts to help her and with no explanation why. But on April 11, while undergoing physical therapy, Murrill suddenly felt a sensation in her legs. Her therapist told her that her hamstring was flexing. She waited to see what would happen.
“[T]he same way the feeling left my legs it returned,” Murrill explained.
She decided to surprise her nurse that day, who did not yet know that she was able to walk again. Murrill had still been paralyzed the day before.
“She had brought me so much joy at a time I needed it that I decided to bring her some,” she said.
When the nurse, whose name has not yet been released, began her shift, the other staff told her that Murrill was looking for her. Murrill’s mother began recording as the teen wheeled herself down the hall in a wheelchair toward her.
But just as the nurse walked up to her with arms wide open, Murrill stood up out of her chair. The nurse let out a scream of surprise.
“Thank you, Lord! Thank you, Lord!” she proclaimed over and over, embracing the teenager as the two cried. “Oh, Jesus.”
“When did this happen?” the nurse asked.
“Today,” Murrill replied.
“I’m so happy for you,” the nurse said. “See there. I told you, just keep that faith.”
Murrill nodded.
The teen’s mother posted the video of the surprise online last Saturday. It has now received over 6 million views.
“Our daughter, Bailey, had complete paralysis from the waist down for 11 days with no explanation as to why,” the description reads. “This video is one of her favorite nurses coming onto her shift and not knowing that Bailey had started walking this day.”
Murrill has since returned home. Doctors still do not know exactly what caused the paralysis.
