SAN DIEGO, Calif. — A California abortionist who was the subject of a viral video last year in which he was captured wielding surgical scissors while declaring his love for killing babies has agreed to surrender his medical license after being formally accused by the state medical board of unprofessional conduct, as well as other violations surrounding the medical mistreatment of female patients.
The Medical Board of California characterized Robert Santella’s actions as being “outrageous conduct” in its 23-page cause for discipline released on Tuesday.
“Respondent shall lose all rights and privileges as a physician and surgeon in California as of the effective date of the medical board’s decision and order,” the document reads. “Respondent shall cause to be delivered to the medical board his pocket license and, if one was issued, his wall certificate…”
As previously reported, the confrontation took place last June as abortion abolitionist Zephaniah Mel stood outside of Family Planning Associates in San Diego preaching the gospel and calling those inside to repent.
“You’ve got to repent, sir, from murdering babies,” Mel stated calmly as he saw Santella, then 72, step outside.
Santella quickly confronted Mel holding a cup of coffee in one hand and scissors in the other.
“Why?” Santella asked, getting close to Mel’s face.
“Because it’s a sin before God,” Mel replied.
Santella then began making strange noises.
“Why?” he repeated.
Santella breathed in Mel’s face, and declared, “Stinky breath!”
“That’s pretty evil of you, sir,” Mel stated.
“Yeah, I am,” Santella replied, and made another hacking noise as he raised the scissors close to Mel.
“That’s what you do to babies,” Mel remarked.
“Yeah, I love it,” Santella declared. “Yeah, I do.”
Mel then told the abortionist that he hopes he comes to Christ.
“No, I don’t go to Christ,” Santella replied. “I don’t listen to Christ!”
“You have a darkened heart, sir,” Mel stated.
“I do have a darkened heart,” Santella agreed, and then leaned into Mel to state, “I do very, very much so.”
When Mel warned that the abortionist would stand before God in judgment for all the babies he had been tearing apart, Santella concurred.
“Yes, I will. Every day,” he said, adding in regard to murdering babies, “I love it. I love it.”
According to NBC San Diego, Santella now says that he “lost his composure” that day and regrets his actions. However, he does not regret his profession as an abortionist, as his attorney told the outlet that Santella is “proud” of his work, in which he “protected and honored women’s rights” to an abortion. He said that he was “hurt” when those who stood outside the facility referred to him as a murderer and baby killer.
Santella was also accused by the state medical board of over-prescribing narcotics to women on half a dozen occasions, as well as botching one mother’s abortion, which resulted in emergency treatment at a local hospital.
“Patient T.D. arrived at Scripps [La Jolla Hospital] in hemorrhagic shock,” the disciplinary report notes. “She was later stabilized and then taken to an operating room where she underwent a supercervical hysterectomy and left salpingo-oopherectomy for uterine perforation, and injury to the left uterine vessels and the left adnexal vessels in the retroperitoneal space.”
A pathology report also outlined that the “products of conception,” or the remains of the deceased unborn baby, were still left inside of the mother’s uterus.
As previously reported, Santella has a longstanding disciplinary record with the California Board of Medical Quality Assurance. In 1983, his license was suspended for 60 days and he was placed on probation for five years for gross negligence after he injured three women, including botching a hysterectomy, which resulted in the patient nearly bleeding to death.
In 2000, Santella was again disciplined for unprofessional conduct after he failed to maintain adequate records for three women and neglected to perform necessary tests. He was placed on probation for four years, and was ordered to take classes, including an ethics course.
