OMAHA, Neb. — A 61-year-old woman has given birth after serving as a surrogate for her son, so he could have a child with his “husband.”

According to reports, Matthew Eledge, 32, and Elliot Dougherty, 29, had talked about in vitro fertilization (IVF) as an option. When Eledge’s mother, Cecile Eledge, then 59, offered to be the surrogate, they laughed at first.

“I told her, ‘Mom, you’re postmenopausal. … You can’t do that. Right?’” Eledge told NBC News.

“I thought if I could do it, I would do it,” his mother told BuzzFeed. “It was kind of a no-brainer.”

The elder Eledge went through a series of tests to see if she would be capable of carrying the child, including a stress test and Pap smear, and underwent estrogen treatments after being confirmed.

Dougherty’s sister, Lea Yribe, now 26, donated eggs for the IVF and the eggs were fertilized with Matthew Eledge’s sperm. The first implantation in Eledge’s mother — one of three fertilized eggs that were thought to be among the most viable — was successful and she carried the child for nearly eight months.

“When we were sitting in the [fertility] clinic with the two boys, and they’d call out ‘Eledge’ and all four of us got up to go,” Kirk Eledge, Cecile’s 66-year-old husband, told BuzzFeed. The others waiting “would just stare, trying to figure out the dynamic of this whole thing.”

On March 25, Eledge gave birth via natural delivery to a five pound, 13 ounce girl, who was named Uma Louise. The birth was announced in a press release from the Omaha Medical Center in Nebraska.

A friend of Matthew Eledge who recently had a baby has been donating the breast milk.

“Talk about a support system! This is a friend we trust and love. We love women. We think women should rule the world. Elliot’s sister donated her eggs, my mom carried her, and we have this dear, beautiful friend giving her this nourishment,” he told BuzzFeed.

“As gay men, we’re so lucky to be having children at a time when people are actually celebratory of our relationship and of us being parents, and also at a time when technology allows us to have this baby, with some of Elliot’s genetic material and some of my genetic material,” Eledge added.

As previously reported, Christians believe that all men are in the same predicament: All are born with the Adamic sin nature, having various inherent inclinations that are contrary to the law of God and being utterly incapable of changing themselves. Jesus outlined in John 3:5-7 that men must be regenerated by the second birth, and be transformed from being in Adam to being in Christ, or they cannot see the kingdom of Heaven.

“Jesus answered and said unto him, ‘Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.’ Nicodemus saith unto him, ‘How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?’ Jesus answered, ‘Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, ‘Ye must be born again.’”

Ezekiel 36:26-27 also outlines, “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you, and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh. And I will put My spirit within you, and cause you to walk in My statutes, and ye shall keep My judgments, and do them.”

The late Anglican preacher J.C. Ryle elaborated, “Can any change his own heart? No! The thing is impossible. We can no more quicken and impart life to our souls than we can to our bodies; we can no more rise and become new men in our own strength than wash away sins by our own performances. It is impossible! The natural man is as helpless as Lazarus was when he lay still and cold and motionless in the tomb. We may remove the stone, as it were, and expose the sad work of death — but we can do no more.”

“There must be a power far mightier than any power of earth in exercise before the natural man can awake and arise and come forth as a new creature. And to do all this is the special office of the Spirit of Christ, the Holy Spirit, whom Jesus promised to send. It is He who quickens; it is He who gives life.”
