A popular megachurch in California has raised eyebrows by hosting a pornography star during its services today.
Miles McPherson of Rock Church in San Diego is welcoming Ron Jeremy, a self proclaimed “porn king,” as well as XXX Church leader Craig Gross to speak about judging others as part of its “Exposed” series. McPherson says that the sermon series is meant to teach congregants that when people point the finger at those in sin, the darkness in their own hearts is exposed.
Jeremy has been making pornographic films for over 30 years and has starred in over 2,000 of them. He has also been named as the top porn star of all time by Adult Video News.
The church’s website features a promotional advertisement for the event, which it has called “Jesus Loves Porn Stars.” It outlines that during the services, people will “learn why the unlikely friendship between Ron and Craig is an example of how Jesus loves porn stars.” It also states, “We are quick to judge celebrities and be entertained by their downfall, when in reality our lives are often just as broken.”
The event marks Jeremy’s second visit to Rock Church. He debated Craig in 2010 about whether or not pornography has a detrimental affect upon society. According to a report of an attendee, the facility was “packed to the point where individuals were sitting on the floor,” and that when Jeremy appeared, “the entire room filled with cheers.” The attendee also outlined that Jeremy used profanity during the event and spoke of a number of explicit personal sexual matters, including claims that he had sexual relations with an 87-year-old woman.
With the announcement of this weekend’s event, some approved of the idea.
“I am going!” enthusiastically stated a man named Mike.
“The Rock has help[ed] many prostitutes and strippers find God and leave a holy life. I pray that this appearance will help some people in need,” said another supporter named Kim.
However, others were distraught and confused about the matter.
“Comparing the sin in our lives with others so we won’t judge them is not the Gospel,” wrote an online commenter. “The Gospel is that Jesus came to seek and to save that which was lost, calling sinners to repentance, forgiving them of their sin and enabling them to walk [ in] an upright and holy life by His power. [A]ll those who don’t repent are not saved. Period. This pastor is not shepherding the flock, he is poisoning the flock.”
“This whole ordeal with Ron Jeremy is so confusing to me,” wrote a 17-year-old, who explained that they had been involved in the pornography industry, but have since repented. “I think the Bible would call it ‘strange fires.’ This is strange fire to me; help me Miles, I dont want to slip back down that path.”
McPherson outlined that he understands that some do not agree with the invitation.
“Oh, people think it’s not appropriate,” he explained. “They don’t think they can learn anything from him being there.”
Jeremy will appear at all five Sunday services. He and Craig Gross are expected to speak about their friendship and how to love the unloveable.
