TEMPE, Ariz. — A Christian legal organization has asked health officials in Arizona to launch an investigation into a local Planned Parenthood facility after the location failed to report the rape of a young girl by an 18-year-old man who went on to rape four others.

According to Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) and police reports on the matter, Tyler Kost raped the unidentifed girl in December 2013, who then went to Planned Parenthood of Tempe to obtain an abortion.

The girl and her mother told an employee at the facility that she had been sexually assaulted, but the employee proceeded to code the matter in documents as being consensual, stating that it was not worth the “hassle” to report the matter to authorities. Planned Parenthood is required under state law to report all incidents of rape.

Kost was later arrested and officially indicted on 27 felony charges, including 10 counts of sexual abuse, nine counts of sexual conduct with a minor, seven counts of sexual assault and one count of child molestation. The criminal indictment brought against Kost names four others who were abused after the date of the unnamed girl’s visit to Planned Parenthood. The girls involved are all between the ages of 13 and 17.

ADF believes that had Planned Parenthood reported Kost as it was required to under the law, the four girls would have been spared from sexual assault.

“The allegations against Planned Parenthood AZ and its employees are not that it merely remained silent, which is itself a crime,” the organization wrote it its official complaint and investigation request to Will Humble, the director of the Arizona Department of Health Services. “The allegations are that Planned Parenthood deliberately misrepresented sexual abuse on a minor by Mr. Kost by deliberately miscoding a sexual assault as ‘consensual…'”

But ADF said that the incident is not localized to Arizona.

“In Ohio, Planned Parenthood allowed a soccer coach who impregnated a 14-year-old child to sign off on her abortion without her parents’ knowledge or consent. As in the Tempe situation, Planned Parenthood failed to report the sexual abuse of the minor to the required authorities and violated informed consent laws,” the organization explained. “In Colorado, Planned Parenthood reportedly failed to inquire about or report the suspected sexual abuse of a 13-year-old child by her stepfather that began when she was only six.”

“Planned Parenthood’s main concern should be the safety of young girls, not the size of its profit margin,” said ADF Legal Counsel Natalie Decker in additional comments about the matter issued in a recent press release. “Sadly, this is not an exception, and Planned Parenthood is abusing more than just taxpayer dollars. Their complicity in placing young girls at the mercy of adult male sexual predators can’t be ignored, nor should it be allowed to continue.”

The organization says that Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeau has called for a criminal investigation into Planned Parenthood of Tempe in light of the incident.

“Planned Parenthood has violated the health and safety of our daughters, putting them at risk,” said ADF Senior Counsel Michael J. Norton. “The Arizona attorney general and Department of Health Services should immediately investigate the Tempe facility to ensure no other young woman is told that sexual assault isn’t worth the ‘hassle’ of filing the mandatory report with police.”

ADF does not support abortion, including in cases of rape.
