ROCKPORT, Maine — The vice principal of a school in Maine has apologized for a recent Facebook post in which he referred to “white Christian men” as terrorists.
“The only terrorists we need to fear are domestic white ‘Christian’ men with easy access to guns,” wrote Piet Lammert of Camden Hills Regional High School wrote last Saturday, the day after the shooting at the Colorado Planned Parenthood. “Vote Bernie. That is all…”
Lammert’s remarks caused alarm for some parents, who contacted the school district to express their concerns.
This week, Lammert deleted his comment and posted an apology.
“With true humility, I write to apologize for the offensive statement that I recently posted on Facebook,” he wrote. “I did not intend this statement literally when I wrote it — it was an exaggeration — but soon after realized that it was unintentionally hurtful, offensive, and divisive at a time when more than ever we need compassion and understanding.”
Lammert suggested that he himself is a professing Christian.
“Had I simply written what I meant, the post would have reflected my urgent distress at the epidemic of mass violence in our country, which more recent events have proven to span all social groups,” he said. “Ironically, in my effort to point out that we run the risk of simplifying the problem by singling out a particular ethnic group, I did exactly that to the group to which I belong.”
Maria Libby, the superintendent at Five-Town Community School District, told reporters that she investigated the matter after receiving complaints, and without further explanation, advised that she took “appropriate action.”
“It was a mistake,” Libby stated. “It was a poor choice in words and it should never have been posted.”
“I will say that I know Piet, and he is someone who genuinely accepts all people,” she remarked. “The Five-Town CSD is committed to providing an atmosphere open to all students, families and staff and has a well-earned reputation for doing so.”
