ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Doctors have successfully delivered a baby girl from her mother’s womb after her mother refused recommendations that she abort her unborn child in the midst of a battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer, and instead decided to forgo treatment in order to save her baby.
Doctors at the University of Michigan performed a Cesarean section on Carrie DeKlyen Wednesday night, delivering her daughter, named Life, at a gestation of 24 weeks, 5 days. She weighs 1 pound, 4 ounces.
“Life was delivered at 24 weeks and 5 days at 5:30 pm. She is doing as well as they had hoped,” the Cure 4 Carrie Facebook page announced. “Thank you, Jesus, for this amazing gift of LIFE!”
The baby is now being treated in the neonatal intensive care unit at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor.
According to Michigan Live, doctors had performed an ultrasound and became concerned that the baby was sick, and therefore decided to move forward with the delivery to save her life. However, “doctors are extremely pleased with how the baby is doing” following birth, sister-in-law Sonya Nelson noted.
As previously reported, DeKlyen, a mother of five, was diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme in April and was accepted for a clinic trial at the University of Michigan. However, in meeting with doctors at the facility, she was informed that she was pregnant and would need to obtain an abortion in order to proceed.
She declined.
“The doctor said, ‘If you don’t terminate this baby, Carrie, you will die,’” her husband Nick recalled to People Magazine. “But it was Carrie’s decision, and I said ‘What do you want to do?’ She said, ‘We’re keeping it.’
DeKlyen has had two brain surgeries since to remove the tumor, but it returned both times. In July, DeKlyen suffered a stroke from which she has not awakened. She has reportedly been in a vegetative state ever since.
“Carrie did make it through surgery and is currently stable,” the Cure 4 Carrie page outlined following her Cesarean section on Wednesday. “The plan is to keep her comfortable as we still continue to pray for a miracle! Thank you all for your outpouring of support. We love you all!”
DeKlyen’s family and friends say that they are trusting her life to God’s hands, and are continuing to raise funds to cover medical expenses. The fundraising goal has now been increased to $100,000, of which over $78,000 has been raised.
DeKlyen is currently off all supports.
“Her time is drawing near, but I know I’ll see her again—not in this life, but after my time is up I’ll be with her again in Heaven,” husband Nick told People Magazine last month. “She made the decision to give Life a chance at life, and I couldn’t be more proud.”
