OCALA, Fla. — A former Oregon resident who became the first person in the United States allowed by a court to legally identify as “non-binary” (neither male or female) on his driver’s license has “renounced all ties to transgenderism” and has now declared in a blog post: “I am and have always been male.”
“In my thirty-plus-year marriage, I am the husband. To my daughter, I am her father. I no longer identify as a transgender or non-binary person and renounce all ties to transgenderism,” wrote Jamie Shupe in a blog post last month.
“I will not be a party to advancing harmful gender ideologies that are ruining lives, causing deaths and contributing to the sterilization and mutilation of gender-confused children,” he declared. “My history-making and landmark sex change to non-binary was a fraud based on the pseudoscience of gender identity. I am and have always been male. There should be no social or legal penalty for others to state that.”
As previously reported, Shupe was born male, served in the military and married a woman. But in 2013, as he found himself struggling with his gender identity, Shupe decided to seek treatments that would make him look and feel feminine.
“I figured I was a transgender woman. My thinking was, well, I’m not a male,” Shupe told reporters. “I was in a deep, dark depression because I had boxed myself into this male identity that I couldn’t stand anymore.”
But after taking hormonal treatments and wearing women’s clothing, Shupe still wasn’t satisfied. It didn’t feel right trying to live as a female.
“Now, I’m suddenly telling my spouse I’m the same thing she is? It didn’t make sense to me,” Shupe told The Guardian. “No amount of hormones is going to make me look like a female.”
He also had no intention of having a sex change operation. So, he decided to be neither.
“I was assigned male at birth due to biology. I’m stuck with that for life. My gender identity is definitely feminine. My gender identity has never been male, but I feel like I have to own up to my male biology,” Shupe told the Oregonian. “Being non-binary allows me to do that. I’m a mixture of both. I consider myself as a third sex.”
In 2016, after his request to be identified as “non-binary” on his Oregon driver’s license was denied, he took the matter to court, and won.
“The sex of Jamie Shupe is hereby changed from female to non-binary,” wrote Judge Amy Holmes Hehn in her decision. “Notice of this legal change shall be posted in a public place in Multnomah County as required by law.”
However, over time, Shupe began to change his mind about the matter. He recently told PJ Media that both his Veterans Administration and local OHSU doctor “would have let me transition into being a cat” if he said he felt like one. Shupe lamented that they had so gladly provided letters for the court to back his “non-binary” gender identity, as well as to prescribe drugs that did not help, but only hurt, his condition.
Shupe said that he came to the realization that he wasn’t receiving proper treatment for the psychotic issues that he had sought help for in the first place, which included hallucinations, destructive behavior and paranoia.
He also told reporters in 2017 following the favorable court ruling that he was concerned about the impact of the decision on “the future of transgender children,” remarking that youth need “societal change,” not “surgical procedures” or “cross-sex hormones.” Shupe also came out against “sex change” operations for those in the military.
“[N]ot all elements of transgenderism are good and healthy,” he wrote in an article published by The Federalist. “I’m very specifically talking about the nutty elements of transgenderism that insist on cutting off healthy body parts, claiming they’re ‘confirming their genders’ and that this is lifesaving. It’s not. It merely enriches the people doing the cutting.”
Shupe again spoke out about the matter the following year, declaring, “Cross-sex hormones failed to cure or even alleviate my gender dysphoria. The only thing that did was to stop believing that I was a female. The APA claims gender dysphoria is a treatable condition with social transitions and hormonal and surgical treatments. My experience as a transsexual patient proves otherwise.”
“As the patient and recipient of these unscientifically proven treatments, and as a guinea pig for the toxic ideology that one can change his or her sex, I’ve come to believe the whole transition process is tragically and fatally flawed. The proof is in the suicide statistics and the rampant suicidal ideation.”
And where Shupe once had been praised and deemed a heroine by advocates of the transgender rights movement, some began backing away from him as they realized that he was no longer supportive of their cause.
PJ Media reports that Lambda Legal dropped Shupe as a client, as the organization advised that he had “taken a position contrary to, and irreconcilable with, Lambda Legal’s organizational interests, the transgender clients we currently represent in other legal matters, and members of the transgender community at large.”
The media has also been largely silent about his repudiation, where it was previously eager to report on his “non-binary” trailblazing.
While, according to the PJ Media, Shupe believes that he can still “be a feminine male and wear women’s clothing as a male” without having to “hide behind a female or non-binary identity,” he said in his blog post that he believes “gender identity is a fraud perpetrated by psychiatry, the likes of something the United States and other nations hasn’t experienced since the lobotomy era.”
“As a result, I have returned to my male birth sex,” Shupe announced.
As previously reported, the Bible teaches that all men are in the same predicament: All are born with the Adamic sin nature, having various inherent inclinations that are contrary to the law of God and being utterly incapable of changing themselves. It is why Jesus outlined in John 3:5-7 that men must be regenerated by the second birth, or they cannot see the kingdom of Heaven.
“Jesus answered and said unto him, ‘Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.’ Nicodemus saith unto him, ‘How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?’ Jesus answered, ‘Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, ‘Ye must be born again.’
“Bitter experience teaches that the imprisoning net clings too tightly to be stripped from our limbs by our own efforts. Nay rather, the net and the captive are one, and he who tries to cast off the oppression which hinders him from following that which is good is trying to cast off himself,” also wrote the late preacher and Bible commentator Alexander Maclaren.
“But to men writhing in the grip of a sinful past, or paralyzed beyond writhing and indifferent, because [they are] hopeless, or because they have come to like their captivity, comes one whose name is ‘The Breaker,’ whose mission it is to proclaim liberty to the captives, and whose hand laid on the cords that bind a soul, causes them to drop harmless from the limbs and sets the bondsman free.”
Jesus declared in John 8, “Verily, verily, I say unto you: Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. And the servant abideth not in the house forever, but the Son abideth ever. If the Son, therefore, shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”
