A domain registration company is seeking to introduce more pornographic sites to the Internet.
Florida-based ICM Registry is awaiting a decision from the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) regarding the approval of the domains .sex, .porn and .adult. ICM already owns the .xxx domain, which it began selling in December 2011. Since that time, over 215,000 pornographic URLs have been purchased from the company.
ICM states that it has funneled 2 million dollars into the expansion. However, some are concerned that ICM will be further promoting and facilitating indecency on the web.
“[Six] months after the launch of .xxx domain, none of the major pornography websites switched from their .com to a .xxx site. In fact, many porn companies just launched more websites on the .xxx domain. There is more pornography!” declared the organization Morality in Media. “The public does not want more Internet porn!”
The organization has launched a call to action on its website, encouraging citizens to write to Congress and Obama to express their disapproval of the furtherance of pornography on the web.
Last year, Morality in Media requested a federal investigation into the practices of ICM Registry, stating that it believed the company may be violating the law by distributing hard-core pornography online.
