A 24-year-old woman died Friday night following an abortion procedure at a Planned Parenthood office in Chicago.

Reports state that Tonya Reaves was obtaining a second trimester abortion at Planned Parenthood’s Loop Health Center, located at 18 South Michigan Avenue, when she began to bleed heavily. She was undergoing a dilation and evacuation procedure, where the woman’s cervix is dilated and then the baby is dismembered piece by piece and reassembled on a tray to make sure that all of the body parts have been removed.

Autopsy reports indicate that she is believed to have died largely because of hemorrhaging, although officials are calling her death an “accident.” She was pronounced dead at 11:20 p.m. at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where she was transported from Planned Parenthood.

Reaves was engaged to be married and reportedly has a one-year-old son.

“It happened so fast. She was just fine one day and then the next day she was gone. We’re just trying to figure out what happened,” stated her twin sister Toni.

“Abortion deaths like this are completely avoidable. When a woman bleeds to death after an abortion, it is usually an indication of error on the part of the abortionist coupled with a delay in calling for emergency assistance,” stated Troy Newman, president of Operation Rescue, in an official statement released Sunday. “Our heartfelt prayers go out to the victim’s family at this time of tragic loss.”

Planned Parenthood has also offered its condolences to the family, and while officials state that such “accidents” are rare, reports of complications stemming from abortion procedures are regularly in the news. Some abortion facilities have reportedly even requested that paramedics arrive via the rear of the building, so that pro-life protestors do not notice that an ambulance has been called to the facility.

“This incident follows a report published in the Chicago Tribune in June 2011 that took to task abortionists in Illinois for failing to report abortion complications and exposed the fact that some abortionists did not report complications at all, in violation of the law. At that time, Illinois officials made no attempt to enforce abortion laws in that state,” Operation Rescue outlines.

“In light of this tragedy, which is yet another in a long list of Planned Parenthood abuses, we call on President Obama to immediately withdraw all federal funding and personal support from Planned Parenthood,” Newman concluded. “Friday’s death is yet another reason why men and women of conscience across this nation cannot and will not comply with the forced funding of abortion and its intentional violation of religious liberties.”
