Some state that the most glaring exclusion from the platform, called “Moving America Forward,” is the mention of God.
“We need a government that stands up for the hopes, values, and interests of working people, and gives everyone willing to work hard the chance to make the most of their God-given potential,” the 2008 platform stated.
“We gather to reclaim the basic bargain that built the largest middle class and the most prosperous nation on Earth – the simple principle that in America, hard work should pay off, responsibility should be rewarded, and each one of us should be able to go as far as our talent and drive take us,” it now reads.
Some note that those supportive of, or sympathetic to, the Democratic party often favor separating God from politics, as well as removing any vestiges of Christianity from municipal, state and federal governments.
Democratic officials advise, however, that while the word “God” is no longer written in the platform, references to faith and religion still remain.
“The 2008 platform reference is ‘God-given’ and is about growing the middle class and making America fair, not actually about faith,” one representative stated. “The platform includes an entire plank on the importance of faith-based organizations and the tremendous work that they do.”
While removing mention of God from the platform, the statement does cite a new addition. In renewing its commitment to keeping abortion-on-demand “legal” in the nation, Democrats now advocate taxpayer funding of abortion.
“The Democratic party strongly and unequivocally supports Roe v. Wade and a woman’s right to make decisions regarding her pregnancy, including a safe and legal abortion, regardless of ability to pay,” the document released this week states. “We oppose any and all efforts to weaken or undermine that right.”
“Abortion is an intensely personal decision between a woman, her family, her doctor, and her clergy; there is no place for politicians or government to get in the way,” it continues. “We also recognize that health care and education help reduce the number of unintended pregnancies and thereby also reduce the need for abortions.”
As previously reported, for the first time in American history, the Democratic platform now also includes party support for homosexual “marriage,” as well as the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).
“We support marriage equality and support the movement to secure equal treatment under law for same-sex couples,” the unanimously-approved text states. “We oppose discriminatory federal and state constitutional amendments and other attempts to deny equal protection of the laws to committed same-sex couples who seek the same respect and responsibilities as other married couples. We support the full repeal of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act and the passage of the Respect for Marriage Act.”
In light of these announcements, last month, Bishop E.W. Jackson, the president of Stand (Staying True to America’s National Destiny), called for a mass exodus from the “Godless left agenda of the Democrat party.”
“[T]hey will shove down our throats what they determine is best, regardless of the Constitution or the will of the people,” he said. “[T]his party has decided to rebel against the people and against God.”
“The Democratic party has turned its back on Christians,” Jackson declared. “It is time to turn our backs on the Democratic party.”
The Democratic National Convention is currently underway in Charlotte, North Carolina, and will continue until Thursday night when Barack Obama delivers his acceptance speech. Dozens of Christians are on scene calling the nation to repentance and faith in Jesus Christ.
