Jimmy Carter on ‘Gay Marriage’: ‘I Think Jesus Would Encourage Any Love Affair’

CarterFormer President Jimmy Carter, a professing Christian who teaches Sunday School at a Baptist Church in Georgia, asserted this week that Jesus would approve of same-sex “marriage,” and really, “any love affair.”

“I believe Jesus would. I don’t have any verse in Scripture,” he told the Huffington Post on Tuesday. “I believe Jesus would approve gay marriage, but that’s just my own personal belief. I think Jesus would encourage any love affair if it was honest and sincere and was not damaging to anyone else, and I don’t see that gay marriage damages anyone else.”

Carter serves as a Sunday School teacher at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia, led by Jeremy Shoulta. During the interview, he referred to himself as a born again Christian.

No one at Maranatha Baptist Church could be reached for comment by press time.
