Preacher, HeartCry Missionary Founder Paul Washer Suffers Heart Attack

RADFORD, Va. — Respected preacher and HeartCry Missionary Founder Paul Washer suffered a heart attack Monday night and is in stable condition, according to information released by his missionary society.

“Paul Washer suffered a heart attack last night. He is in stable condition,” his social media pages simply read Tuesday morning.

By the afternoon, an update advised that Washer was improving, albeit slowly. HeartCry Missionary Society has requested continued prayer.

In the meantime, messages of support have poured in from around the world for Washer.

“Paul Washer is a sober preacher in this age of convincing heresies. We are praying for you here in South Africa,” wrote one social media follower.

“We are with you; we love you in Christ! Forward and with power! From Argentina,” posted another.

“Praying. God used his preaching to give me the real view of the gospel. God sustains him. From Colombia with love,” wrote a third.

Washer, 55, is best known for his “shocking youth message” delivered at a 2002 youth evangelism conference in Montgomery, Alabama. During his message, Washer exhorted those gathered to examine themselves to determine if they are truly regenerated.

“I spend most of my time preaching in South America, in Africa, and Eastern Europe. And I want you to know that when you take a look at American Christianity, it is based more upon a godless culture than it is upon the Word of God,” he lamented.

Washer pointed to Matthew 7, in which Jesus taught that His followers will be known by their fruit.

“If you are genuinely a born-again Christian, a child of God, you will walk in the way of righteousness as a style of life. And if you step off that path of righteousness, the Father will come for you. He will discipline you. He will put you back on that path,” he explained.

“If you can play around in sin, if you can love the world and love the things of the world, if you can always be involved in the world and doing things of the world, if your heroes are worldly people, if you want to look like them and act like them, if you practice the same things they practice—Oh my dear friend, listen to my voice. There’s a good chance you know not God, and you do not belong to Him,” Washer warned.

Washer became saved as a young adult while studying to be an oil and gas lawyer at the University of Texas. In a testimony shared online, he explains that late one night, while feeling especially miserable, God sent a student to his door with the message that he would continue to be miserable until he surrendered his life to Christ. The visit began a conversation that eventually led him to faith and repentance.

After graduating, Washer served as a missionary to Peru for 10 years, during which time he founded the HeartCry Missionary Society. His organization now works to take the gospel to Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Eurasia, North America, and Latin America.

I have been listening to this man’s messages a lot recently. I was stunned to hear this news.

  • Faded Hope

I love this preacher, he helped lead me to Christ. I still listen to his sermons on YouTube to this day.

    • InTheChurch

  • Prayers for Paul and his family. Thank God for what he has done with this man’s life.

  • Lizop

I pray the Lord heal you and bring you back to strength, stronger than you were before. You have a message to preach that is much needed in our western culture.

  • Omnicopy

Probably a false preacher from a false church! These false preachers will end up in hell! Got news God doesn’t draw us by sending someone to our door that tells us we will be miserable forever if we don’t give our lives to Jesus!

    • InTheChurch

Do you read the Bible? Jesus himself gave us detailed instructions. This man is following through. he will have to answer to God for his true or false teachings.
So do you want to spend eternity in hell?

      • Omnicopy

Do you want to spend your time in a false church and then hell???

        • InTheChurch

I have left a false church for a real church and I have no plans to attend hell. I hope you make that same decision.

          • Omnicopy

If you’re still going to a church, you haven’t found the real truth yet. I am the church! I don’t go to it. What is you church’s name and denomination and do you see the gifts function there? And I’ll tell you if it’s another false church!

          • InTheChurch

Assemblies of God and you bet the fruits and gifts are seen there. Do you have a gift of the Spirit? How are you helping the church people with your fruits and gifts if you are at home? You might want to read up on why we have them. Your truth might not line up with God’s.

          • Omnicopy

Huh woman of Revelation 12 here! How does the woman help the world??? A lot! Assemblies of God is a false denomination. They accept women preachers, say everyone has to speak in tongues, and have quite a few false doctrines. I suggest you move on to a homechurch. I just stay at home myself. I function in many of the gifts, discerning of spirits. tongues, words of knowledge, and prophecy.

          • InTheChurch

But you missed the part that says you are to use your gifts and fruits to help the church people. You are not helping to build the church. or are you? What is wrong with women leading in church? how many women were used in the Bible? Tell me where the scriptures say that a woman can not lead? if you are going to refer to Paul’s verses, please don’t go there. You need to find a church and help build up the children and youth.

          • Omnicopy

You’re a fake. Disinformation person. You know nothing of the truth. You don’t even know women can’t lead God’s Church and you just want to argue.

          • jenkinsbrigade

Well, it doesn’t look like the moderators have gotten around to this page yet.

          • Omnicopy

It is quite obvious to those of us who know the real truth when someone doesn’t!!! Duh!!! You don’t know the true doctrine of women leaders in the church, that is quite plain to me.

          • InTheChurch

Read in 1 Corinthians 12, 13 and 14 about the gifts and tell me what it says about them and why they are used.

          • Omnicopy

No, you come to the truth about women pastors first and leave your fake church you attend, then we’ll talk more.

          • InTheChurch

If God calls a woman to preach, pastor or to a ministry, I will not question Him or go against the holy spirit. We don’t know if God has big plans for that specific woman who is willing to work for God. We are restricting God. Who are we to do that? Who are you?
As for my church, until I see something better elsewhere, AG is where I will be. Right now, I see nothing worth leaving for. And especially not for some lonely confused person who has no clue. You might want to have a word with God and get your stuff straight.

    • Amos Moses

      so speaking without knowing ……… /SMH ………….

Praying that God is not finished using this brother on this side of Glory.

Love him. A great man of God. We desperately need people like him in these hours in which we live today. I’m praying for full recovery.

  • Sam Nation

    Praying – psalm 109
Let his days be few, and another take his office
Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow.
Let his children be continually vagabonds, and beg: let them seek their bread also out of their desolate places.
Let the extortioner catch all that he hath; and let the strangers spoil his labour.
L13 Let his posterity be cut off; and in the generation following let their name be blotted out.

14 Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered with the Lord; and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out.

15 Let them be before the Lord continually, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth.

16 Because that he remembered not to shew mercy, but persecuted the poor and needy man, that he might even slay the broken in heart.

17 As he loved cursing, so let it come unto him: as he delighted not in blessing, so let it be far from him.

18 As he clothed himself with cursing like as with his garment, so let it come into his bowels like water, and like oil into his bones.

19 Let it be unto him as the garment which covereth him, and for a girdle wherewith he is girded continually.

20 Let this be the reward of mine adversaries from the Lord, and of them that speak evil against my soul.

21 But do thou for me, O God the Lord, for thy name’s sake: because thy mercy is good, deliver thou me.

Paul Washer is a friend of
God. God is good and faithful. He will take great care of him. Thank you Holy Spirit for touching Paul. Thank you Jesus for healing him. Amen

  • DMCasey

Praying for you, Sir. You are a faithful man of God and have so blessed our lives through your testimony and preaching.

  • Brendan Batt

This man was the first I heard preach, representing a larger group, believing in a gospel with power. His testimony, his wife’s too, gave me hope at a time I need saved from me. Which God finally did. I somehow hope his whole family will be encouraged during this time that every challenge with health this man has had has strengthened many of us, especially family men, here in new Zealand. His testimony, well, God used it to save me

  • Amos Moses

So in keeping with his christian witness …… i am told PW, on his facebook page …… or someones facebook page ….. has said that he is sorry … he did not make it to the third heaven …. and so no book will be forth coming …… What A Guy ………

  • Arun Daniel

I am really blessed to hear the word of God (Jesus Christ) through him. His understanding of God’s word Is so true and correct.

  • Arun Daniel

me and my family pray to god for his speedy recovery

  • Marty

So shocked and saddened to hear this news! Paul Washer is truly faithful to the Word, an uncompromising preacher. Praise God for what He has wrought in this man’s life!! Praying for him and his familY…for him to be able to continue the great work that has been put in his hands…

  • D S

i Pray that this man truly comes to know Jesus on the only terms God afford us: by coming to him as a child and believing on Him for Eternal Life; not trusting in our own works *AT ALL* – whether it be our repentance from our sins (which he teaches is a necessary prerequisite for Salvation), or works after we have trusted Him. It seems that, as much as he may pay mere lip service to Salvation by Grace through Faith alone, he is adding works to Salvation, thereby nullifying Grace.

No one will ever admit that they add works to Salvation (well, rarely), but the human heart is deceptive above all things, and exhausts itself in inventing new ways to smuggle works into Salvation. THAT won’t fly. Jesus will tell such people, who trust in their “many wonderful works,” “I never knew you (Mat. 7:23),” because they have not *done the Father’s will,* which is to simply BELIEVE on Him for Eternal Life (“And this is the will of Him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.” John 6:40).

Please Pray, those of you who truly know Jesus, that he comes to know the real Jesus as well, and has a chance to get back up and preach some messages about how wrong he was.

    • ER

Wow – spot on. Really appreciate your post. I’ve thought the same about him and always felt bad, because you see the honest fervency in him, but it’s in such error. I pray he recovers and as you said, comes to know Jesus and His grace.

    • zoey

I agree! With you in this one and I will also pray for his recovery

    • Dudley DoRight

Any man that tears down a man of God, is not of God…..

      • D S

        Dudley DoRight:

By that, do you mean to suggest that i am “tear[ing] down a man of God”? If so, please show me where I “tore him down.” When you preach the Gospel to people, and ask them to believe on Jesus and Jesus ALONE for Eternal Life, and not trust in their own works (if you indeed do this), are YOU “tearing them down”? I make no apologies for drawing attention to the fact that Washer encourages people to “mix-n-match” their own works with the limitless Grace of God – and THAT is “another Gospel” (read Galatians) which cannot save. Those who are listening to Washer, and trusting in what he says, are being led into Hell. Not only will they have an awful time here on earth – constantly looking to themselves to detect some evidence of Salvation in the form of their own “good works” – but, ultimately, they will be like the men in Matthew 7:
21Not every one that saith unto me, LORD, LORD, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that DOETH THE WILL OF MY FATHER which is in heaven.
22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and IN THY NAME DONE MANY WONDERFUL WORKS?
23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that WORK iniquity.
The men in that passage believed that their access pass to Heaven was all the works they did in Jesus Name. These are the archtypical “Lordship Salvation” believers – just like Paul Washer. They didn’t really do the Will of the Father. Well, what IS the “will of the Father”? Turn to John 6:40:
“And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.” (John 6:40)
Washer – whether he will admit it or not (and almost no one ever does) – is trusting in his own works, and strongly encouraging others to do the same. This sort of trusting in your own works is a damnable heresy, and the Bible is very clear about it. If YOU are doing this, you need to repent (and the word means to change one’s mind) of it and trust Jesus ALONE. I say this not to “tear you down,” but to tell you the truth.

In my prayers Paul, may God give you and your family great comfort

  • Austin Ezirim

I love Paul washer and what God is doing through him,i have been impacted by his sermons,my prayers are with him and his family.

  • Scott Lawrence

From a brother in Christ in Australia, Brother Washer (and family) hope you recover soon. Remember Rom 5:2-5 “By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us”. May the Lord give you strength as you go through this trail, praying for you all in this time of need.

  • Jeff B.

I pray that brother Paul recovers quickly, you brother Paul preaches the truth in a world that doesn’t like to hear the truth. You brother Paul preach sermons that has caused me to do a spiritual gut check to see if I am in the right standards with God. Thank you brother for remaining authentic in God’s Word.

  • René Kokmeyer

I have been a Christian for most of my life, I am 71 now, or so I thought….until I watched the shocking sermon of Paul Washer. I had never heard of him. I could not get enough of this sermon, must have watched it 50 times, put them on DVDs, gave them to others. We support Hearcry and it changed my life and my relationship with Jesus Christ!

  • Continuing to pray for him. He is used by God, used mightily!!
