Englewood, New Jersey — A pro-life Christian in New Jersey was struck by a car this weekend as an anesthesiologist arrived for work at one of the largest abortion facilities in the state.
Joe Caruso, a musician and filmmaker, told Christian News Network that as he stood on the public sidewalk outside of Metropolitan Medical Associates on Saturday morning, he was suddenly struck by anesthesiologist Samuel G. Caruthers. According to the facility’s website, during surgical abortions, women are “attended by a board certified gynecologist, an M.D. anesthesiologist and a registered nurse.”
“It happened so fast,” he said. “I was standing on the sidewalk conversing with a woman on the street, and out of nowhere this car [strikes me].”
Caruso stated that he saw Caruthers’ BMW coming toward him and put his hand up as a natural reflex.
“Not that my hand is going to stop a car, but he put on his break when I put my hand out, and the car hit my fingers,” he explained. “If I didn’t move, I think my leg or my foot might have been run over.”
“It’s a one way street,” Caruso said. “There were no cars blocking his visibility, so there is no excuse for what happened.”
He stated that Caruthers did not roll down his window or exit the vehicle to see if he was hurt.
“You would expect someone to get out of the car and say, “I’m sorry. Are you okay?” Caruso said.
“I screamed, ‘Hey buddy, I got this on video,'” he recalled. “And he proceeded to drive past me and go down the ramp.”
Caruso had been recording for a documentary that he is producing on the issue of abortion.
Following the incident, Caruso called out to a police officer that works at the abortion facility. He stated that there was no shock or panic from anyone that he had just been struck by the abortion worker’s vehicle.
“I believe the officer that was standing outside still had his hands in his pocket until I started saying something,” he noted. “He was very lackadaisical, if you will.”
The officer called 911, however, and an ambulance arrived to take care of Caruso. He also obtained the employee’s information.
“[My fingers] were numb, and they still are numb,” he said. “[The paramedics] gave me an ice pack and asked me if I wanted to go to the hospital.”
Caruso opted not to go. He states that the officer obtained Caruthers’ license plate number and provided him with his name. Caruso also spoke with a security guard at the facility, who advised that the officer talked to Caruthers about the incident. He was also informed that Caruthers is currently on probation for another matter.
Caruso then went to the police department to file a complaint, but it unsure of what will happen next.
“I’m totally in the dark,” he said. “I don’t know what to do at this point.”
He states that he does know, however, that being struck by a car while standing on the public sidewalk is unacceptable.
“This was absolutely wrong,” Caruso remarked. “Some of these abortionists are quite arrogant, and apparently his behavior was very arrogant.”
“I’m not surprised,” he said.
Metropolitan Medical Associates reportedly performs over 10,000 abortions a year. In 2009, the facility reached a $1.5 million settlement with a woman who suffered massive hemorrhaging, a coma and a stroke while obtaining an abortion in 2007. She ended up having a hysterectomy, thus making her unable to ever conceive children again.
