Wisconsin Man Pleads Guilty to ‘Attempting to Provide Material Support’ to ISIS

Van HaftenMADISON, Wisc. — A Wisconsin man has plead guilty to a federal charge of attempting to provide material support for the barbaric Islamic group ISIS.

As previously reported, Joshua Van Haften, 35, was arrested in April 2015 by the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) as his flight from Turkey landed at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. Van Haften had traveled to the country in August 2014, which is known to be an entry point into Syria.

“Van Haften traveled overseas for the alleged purpose of joining and attempting to provide material support to ISIL,” said Assistant Attorney General Carlin in a statement.

Officials found that Van Haften had liked comments from ISIS supporters on social media and had publicly outlined his philosophies and undertakings on his personal Facebook page.

“My password has always been ‘Death to America’s New World Order’ for the past fifteen years when me and Ibrahim Malik Al-Amin made a covenant in the prison cell,” he wrote, according to the federal complaint. “That was no secret to NSA.”

“It’s either now or never,” Van Haften allegedly wrote in another discussion. “If and when the Kuffar (slaves of America) come at me to arrest me or take me, I’m fighting them. [Expletive] if they ever take me freely again!”

He also pledged his allegiance to the leader of ISIS, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, writing, “The only thing that matters to me is joining my brothers for the war against America [sic] liars.”

On Thursday, Van Haften plead guilty to a charge of attempting to provide material support and resources to ISIS.

“Van Haften admitted that in 2014, he attempted to provide material support to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), knowing that the organization was a designated terrorist organization that has engaged and engages in terrorism,” the U.S. Department of Justice outlined in a press release.

He is scheduled to be sentenced on Feb. 17 by U.S. District Judge James Peterson. He faces up to 15 years in prison.

As previously reported, FBI Director James Comey remarked earlier this year that he believes ISIS sympathizers are present throughout the nation.

“We have investigations of people in various stages of radicalizing in all 50 states,” he told a meeting of the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG). “This isn’t a New York phenomenon or a Washington phenomenon. This is all 50 states and in ways that are very hard to see…”

Comey explained that Islamic terror groups believe that they are carrying out their acts as part of the end times.

“ISIL in particular is putting out a siren song with their slick propaganda through social media that goes like this: ‘Troubled soul, come to the caliphate. You will live a life of glory. These are the apocalyptic end times. You will find a life of meaning here fighting for our so-called caliphate. And if you can’t come, kill somebody where you are,” he outlined. “That is a message that goes out to troubled souls everywhere.”

Nadeem Walayat of the Market Oracle has likewise noted that groups like ISIS and Boko Haram have an apocalyptic strategy.

“What ISIS and virtually all Muslims anticipate is for Jesus to return on the white Eastern Minaret of Damascus (Syria) gliding in on the wings of two angels and then through much blood and carnage will convert the whole world to Islam including killing all of the Jews, break all of the crosses and live as a Muslim for 40 years, before dying and thus heralding the final countdown to Judgment Day when Muslims expect to enter paradise,” he wrote in a report on the matter.
