Marijuana Use Linked to Poorer School Performance, New Research Reveals

(The Independent) Teenagers who smoke marijuana regularly achieve poorer grades at school and risk their chances of going to university, according to a major new scientific study.

A longitudinal study of more than 26,400 pupils in Canada found those who started using marijuana at least once a month were around half as likely to achieve high grades as they were before taking up the habit, and were ultimately less likely to pursue university ambitions.

Marijuana users were also four times more likely to skip classes and two-to-four times less likely to complete their homework and value getting good grades.

US children would not seek drugs if they could receive free Christian education. Make Christian education free in the USA. Secular education only gives despair.

    • Lexical Cannibal

Spoken like a person who has never been to an American Christian school. They tend to have pretty well-developed drug cultures, believe it or not. I attended one for seven years, myself and while I wasn’t exactly handing out surveys, I think it’s fair to say that at least half of my fellow students were in on the trade, regardless of whether they partook themselves. If you’re looking for something a little less anecdotal, the National Center on Addition and Substance Abuse at Columbia University reported in 2012 that 54% of private school students would describe their school as “drug infected,” further reporting that faith did not play a meaningful role in raising or lowering drug use in students.

      • Sisyphus

Mood altering substances or psychoactive compounds certainly are not respective of specific educational systems.

I was in real Christian schools with real Christian friends, then. Those polls are not trustworthy anyway. Kids need Christian education; secular education is suicidal with immorality and substance abuse. Education counts. Why aren’t you Christian? Change your handler’s name; “cannibal” sounds horrible. Read “Peace Child” by Don Richardson.

        • Lexical Cannibal

          Haha, okay, in order.

I was in real Christian schools with real Christian friends, then. Those polls are not trustworthy anyway.

I was also in a Real Christian school with Real Christian friends. Turns out Real Christians do drugs, too.

Kids need Christian education; secular education is suicidal with immorality and substance abuse. Education counts.

Education does count, for sure. Speaking of, let’s go to math class. Show your work, or no marks for you.

          Why aren’t you Christian?

Well, that’s a long story, but to violently truncate it, I realized that with the factual basis for it falling flat, the morality being pretty spotty, and the promises going unfulfilled, the only thing keeping me there was how happy it made me, and it wasn’t even doing that anymore.

Change your handler’s name; “cannibal” sounds horrible.

Okay, so 1) I think you meant “handle.” as in “change your handle,” or perhaps just “change your name.” The English word “handler” means someone who cares for, maintains, and/or trains something, usually animals, e.g. “He is a crocodile handler. My crocodile handler’s name is Seung.” Based on your name, I’m guessing Chinese or Korean is your first language? Only a guess. Regardless, mistakes happen.
          2) Your attitude is horrible, change it. You don’t get to tell me what to do.
          3) It’s wordplay, lady, jeez. Lexical Cannibal. Go look up the word “lexicon” and see if you can figure it out.

Read “Peace Child” by Don Richardson.

No. Thanks, though. Working my way through Heaney’s Beowulf right now to brush up on my Anglo-Saxon.

          • Grace Kim Kwon

Real Christians quit doing drugs because the Holy Bible commands not to harm the body. Math is God’s “language” of creating the universe. Every subject speaks of and for God’s truth. USA became very, very bad( excuse me of my mild expression) after the nation became godless secular. The nation’s children need real parents and Christian education to stay intact. You did not become Christian only because you loved sins. You must repent of your sin and trust in Jesus for salvation.

Why are you here in a Christian newsite anyway if what you said is true? Stop making Christians suffer. Thank you for correcting my word usage. Using the name “cannibal” for yourself is simply horrible; that’s what I mean. There are too many zombie-lovers nowadays it’s not funny anymore. How much of mental illness is enough for the society? If you are white, don’t slander your Christian ancestors including the Crusaders. No generation is worse than the modern men in rich secular nations. You guys should feel ashamed for the failure to protect the women and children of your tribe.

          • Lexical Cannibal

Oh man, you’re a peach. This is fun!

Real Christians quit doing drugs because the Holy Bible commands not to harm the body.

Demonstrably false. People who want to quit drugs enough for them to seek out a support system quit drugs. As I wrote above, religion does not appear to play a strong role in it.

Math is God’s “language” of creating the universe.

Ah, see, I think this might have been a bit of an English idiom that went over your head. In math classes over here, when a student skips writing down steps in their assignment, they are told to “show their work” in the sense that they write out all the steps so the teacher can see how they arrived at their answer. I was telling you to do the same. Because you didn’t. When you don’t, it leaves me sharply disinclined to care about your opinion.

USA became very, very bad( excuse me of my mild expression) …

See, this is why you’re so fun to talk to. I’m not sure if this is a language thing or you’re really just this softly-worded, but I say sharper things to bland food. For the record “very, very bad” is not outright offensive, in most contexts.

You did not become Christian only because you loved sins. You must repent of your sin and trust in Jesus for salvation.

I’m assuming you meant something similar to “You were not a Christian before because of your love of sin.” or something to that effect? Here’s something else to google for you; the “No True Scotsman” fallacy. Also known as 沒有真正的蘇格蘭人 or 순수성에 호소하라 (Still just guessing on the native language).

Why are you here in a Christian newsite anyway if what you said is true?

Oh, lots of reasons. A bit of schadenfreude, a bit of morbidity, mostly I just like to keep up with what the culture’s doing these days. Plus I get to meet people like you!

            Stop making Christians suffer.

That street goes two ways, lady.

Using the name “cannibal” for yourself is simply horrible; that’s what I mean.

So I’m guessing you didn’t go look up the word “lexicon” and figure it out for yourself? Because my name is definitely not a reference to cannibalizing people, and most folk would have caught that.

There are too many zombie-lovers nowadays it’s not funny anymore.

I agree completely! As a trend, it was pretty good stuff for a while, but it’s just tired and old hat, now.

How much of mental illness is enough for the society?

About as much as it takes for my state to start taking it seriously and funding its treatment, I suppose. Sort of a non sequitur, though. Why do you ask?

If you are white, don’t slander your Christian ancestors including the Crusaders.

Wow, this is probably the best line out of your entire comment. It’s got more “telling me what to do,” bundled with a bit of “poorly understood history,” with just a light dash of “racism.”

But seriously though, you wanna talk ancestors? Because my religion’s pretty serious about its ancestors. Go back far enough and you’ve got “fine upstanding Christians” forcing my ancestors into converting to your foreign religion by board or by sword. I don’t have to slander them; they were monsters all by themselves.

You guys should feel ashamed for the failure to protect the women and children of your tribe.

My tribe? My tribe is fine. We’re actually pretty egalitarian and we value the safety and well-being of our children highly. If you’re talking about the United States, though, then yeah, we could be doing a lot better. Most of the politicians trying to weaken protections for women and children, though, are the conservative Christians, so there’s that.

          • Grace Kim Kwon

#1 You are wrong. 1) Christian faith makes people quit doing wrong things. Some instantly and some others over a time. It also cures illiteracy and barbarism. 2) When genuine scholars and housewives have definite answers, they are correct ones. It’s your job to go through the process and arrive at the given correct answers. 3) I thought the expression “very, very bad” was too nice for the present USA. What has gone wrong with you guys? You have spacious land. Martians hate the Sodomites. Genesis ch.4. Don’t ruin Mars, OK?

          • Grace Kim Kwon

#2 Read on. 4) Westerners who reject Christianity are the ones who love sins. You fit the category and you are no exception. Non-christian Westerners support abortion and sexual depravity. 5) You must talk to people to find out the truth, not to entertain yourself. Read the Holy Bible if you have time to talk to people online. The West oppresses Christians by demanding them to endorse immorality.

          • Grace Kim Kwon

#3 Continue. 6) I think those who are into zombies are not mentally wholesome. Today’s youth is too polluted. Youth pollution is more serious; planet melting away or nuked is nothing comparing to today’s young people’s degrading character quality. 7) I don’t like Western white people who bash their own ancestors of any era. I feel like saying, “Shut up and look at your own present Sodomic chaos. Every abuse is far worse in today’s world.” 8) Your ancestors were good and normal comparing to your own generation. They did not blasphemed or forced Sodomy or massacred millions of human babies like the modern Westerners are doing.

          • Grace Kim Kwon

#4 The last one. 9) People converted to Christianity willfully, not forcibly, because Christianity is incomparably and absolutely true and life-saving and excellent. You say the stuff you say because you’ve been educated wrong. We used to believe there were some monsters in the history, but the modern world is full of them. 10) You are wrong on the last point. Western men are not protecting their women and children even in women’s restrooms today because there are no virgins for marriage. It’s a horrible thing for a man to protect a nation of prostitutes. Society needs chaste maidens for everyone to stay safe. It all comes down to it.

  • Grace Kim Kwon

Divorce of parents is bad to human brain and character in every way as well.

  • Colin Rafferty

From the summary of the article itself, “initiating weekly marijuana use increased the likelihood of college ambitions, while more regular marijuana use reduced the likelihood…”.

In other words, it’s mixed. Daily regular use is a poor choice. But having a toke on a Saturday night is will make a teenager more likely to want to go to college.

    • Lexical Cannibal

To say nothing of the question of correlation. What are the predictable personality markers that define a person who lights up once a week versus once a day? How does the illegality of the drug affect those demographics? Are people who smoke daily already on a less academically successful path? Presumably, if this report is worth the paper it’s written on, they made some attempt to control for that, but these are still very, very big questions that need to get answered before we can definitively say “pot makes you dumb,” or even “This much pot makes you dumb.”

  • V-Ball

Well, DUH. Yeah, potheads are losers, whatever their age. Every met any? Pitiful creatures.

    • Sisyphus

I have smoked cannabis occasionally for > 40 years, and am also a tenured University professor, so not particularly a “loser”; However, as Lexical pointed out, there are many other variables and correlation causation.

  • Ken Faivor

Like being drunk makes you dumb so does getting stoned. But the one drunk or stoned never see it in themselves. In fact, I’ve noticed the stoned man often fancies himself a philosopher on the order of the great thinkers of history. I have often witnessed these thinkers on the couch “thinking”, And when articulating their thoughts it’s a wonder to behold.

  • Blake Paine

We know that pot usage in early teens inhibits the adolescent ‘neural pruning’ that occurs in the brain. No one should be using pot before their brain matures which is 20 to as late as 23.

But on the other hand recent studies have shown that at least some types of schizophrenia are due to excessive neural pruning during this adolescent time. Treatment of those with the genetic disposition to schizophrenia at this time with whatever the active ingredient is in pot that inhibits pruning might prevent them from ever developing this crippling disease at all.

As with everything reason and avoiding knee-jerk assumptions is the path of the wise.
