Christian Woman in Pakistan Dies After Being Set on Fire for Refusing to Convert to Islam, Marry Muslim

LAHOREPakistan (Morning Star News) – A Christian woman in Pakistan died on Sunday night (April 22) after a Muslim in the Sialkot area set her on fire for refusing to convert to Islam and marry him, relatives said.

Muhammad Rizwan Gujjar poured kerosene on 25-year-old Asma Yaqoob and set her on fire on Wednesday (April 17), resulting in burns on 80 percent of her body, sources said.

She and her father, Yaqoob Masih, and her brother Maqsood were at the house where she worked as a domestic worker for Saeeduz Zaman in the Mohalla Pakpura area when the attack took place, according to a police report.

Masih, a resident of Mohalla Bogara near Hajipura, stated in the police First Information Report (FIR 171/18) that he and his son had gone to Zaman’s house at 11 p.m. to meet Asma and inquire after the health of Zaman’s ailing mother.

“We were sitting in a room when there was a knock on the front gate,” he said. “Asma went out to see who had come, when after some time we heard her screaming in pain. Zaman, Maqsood and I rushed outside to see what had happened and saw the accused Rizwan Gujjar fleeing from the scene while Asma was engulfed in flames.”

At Sialkot Civil Hospital, Asma Yaqoob told them that Gujjar had been pressuring her to marry him for some time, but that she had turned him down because she did not want to recant her Christian faith, Masih stated in the FIR.

Asma Yaqoob’s mother, Parveen Akhtar, told Morning Star News that her daughter had previously complained of Gujjar insisting that she convert to Islam and marry him, and that he issued the demand again at Zaman’s house.

“Asma told us that on the night of the attack, Gujjar had come to Zaman’s house and told her that she has no other choice but to renounce her faith and marry him in court the next morning,” Akhtar said. “My daughter refused, upon which he emptied a bottle of petrol on her body and set her alight.”

The family rushed her to Lahore, 154 kilometers away (95 miles), as there is no burn unit in Sialkot Civil Hospital.

Impoverished Christian women in Pakistan are commonly pressured to marry Muslims with promises of a better life. Asma Yaqoob was the sixth of 10 children born to low-income municipal workers who retired years ago, her mother said.

“My daughter is a staunch Protestant Christian and had been resisting Gujjar’s pressure for a long time,” she said. “She was not interested in him and had repeatedly complained about his misbehavior. When all efforts failed to convince Asma to cave in to his demand, Gujjar attempted to kill her.”

Police have arrested Gujjar, and he has confessed to killing the Christian woman, attorney Riaz Anjum of the Pakistan Center for Law and Justice (PCLJ) told Morning Star News, though published reports in Pakistan cited police saying Gujjar claimed she caught fire on accident.

Christian rights activist Napolean Qayyum, also of the PCLJ, said the local Christian community was proud that Asma Yaqoob had stood her ground and refused to succumb to pressure to renounce her faith.

“The brave girl belongs to a very poor family, yet she refused attempts to forcibly convert her to Islam,” he said. “It’s a good thing that the police not only arrested the accused but also managed to elicit a confession from him – in most cases we have seen, the police facilitate the accused when it comes to matters involving girls belonging to minority faiths.”

As an example, Qayyum said that a 13-year-old Christian girl (name withheld) was raped on April 11 by a local Muslim in the Sharaqpur area, some 25 kilometers (15 miles) from Lahore. Three young Muslim men stood guard while another identified only as Shehryar raped her, but the three alleged accomplices were not even named in the FIR, Qayyum said.

“The suspects belong to the powerful Arian community, and we believe that they are influencing the police to prevent their arrests, as none of them have been arrested till date,” he said.

The investigating officer in the case, Sub-Inspector Ijaz Khan, denied that police were showing any bias, telling Morning Star News that only Shehryar was named because he allegedly raped the girl.

“The other three men, according to the victim, did not rape her, so why name them?” he said, declining to comment on why the suspects could not be charged as facilitators, especially as the rape took place in a house belonging to one of them.

The girl’s mother, Razia (surname withheld) told Morning Star News that the accused were pressuring the family for an out-of-court “reconciliation” agreement.

“They are now pressing us to reconcile by offering us money, but we have resolved not to compromise over our daughter,” she said. “The Muslim boys have ruined the life of my daughter, and we will not rest till we get justice.”

This is what real Christian persecution looks like. It is horrifying in the extreme. Her family has my deepest sympathy, and I hope they are able to obtain justice for their brutally murdered daughter.

    • Amos Moses – He>i

the STEPS leading up to this “real christian persecution” ……looks like what MANY do here everyday …… or whenever they post ….. because this stuff does not just happen ….. it happens in stages …….

      • Croquet_Player

Indeed, many types of persecution happen “in stages”. The first of which is promoting one religious (or non-religious) viewpoint over another. Glad you agree. I’m grateful we live in the United States, where that sort of thing is illegal.

        • Guest✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

Then why is Islam promoted in schools and Christians going to jail for honoring their faith?

          • Croquet_Player

If you have any evidence of Islam being promoted in any public school, please let the public know. I’d like to know too. You and I will be the first to report it, and we will both encourage our friends who support the constitution to do the same. I most strongly encourage anyone who knows of this activity to report it as well. You may report it to the local or state authorities, and you may report it to the the Freedom From Religion Foundation, if the local authorities are acting illegally. It is illegal to promote, or discourage, any religion, or absence of religion, in a public school.

If you know of any Christians, or people of any faith, being jailed in the United States due to their faith alone, then I will stand with you, and them. Please let us know who they are, and why they are in jail.

          • Guest✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

We’ve already discussed it. There are articles about it on this site. Families are suing school boards because of it.

          • Croquet_Player

No, I have not discussed the issue with you. I have not seen any articles here, or anywhere else, where a school, or an individual school employee, has been found to be promoting Islam in particular. As we both know, it is entirely illegal to do so. It is illegal for public schools and their employees to promote or discourage any religion, or absence of religion. If you could please identify the school district where this has happened, and a lawsuit is involved, I’d very much like to to know about it. Can you please identify the lawsuit and/or the school district where this is taking place?

          • Guest✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

Then go search for it. It’s all over this site.

          • Croquet_Player

I have seen what is all over this site, and despite my searches, I have yet to see any reports of an actual lawsuit. I’m asking you, once again, to please identify, in what school district is a school or a particular school employee being accused of promoting Islam? It is illegal to promote Islam, or any faith, or non faith, in a public school. Please identify the school employee or school district where this is supposedly happening. Or please name any current public lawsuit, in any court in the United States, in which it is claimed Islam is illegally being taught in any public school. It is entirely illegal, as we both strongly agree. Name the employee. Name the school. I want to know. You seem to know. Please identify them. I do not support illegal indoctrination in public schools. If you know something I don’t, please allow me to add my voice. I will stand with you.

          • Guest✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

Please. Supposedly you can search this site yet can’t come up with any of the recent cases in the news? Pull the other finger. Try searching “Parents Sue Public School For Teaching Islam” and then pretend you don’t see it.

          • Croquet_Player

Thank you for the specific title of the case. I did look it up, that case was dismissed by the court. So no, the outcome did not find the child was being illegally indoctrinated at school.

          • Guest✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

The case hasn’t been dismissed yet, but even if it were, it does not mean that the claims were not true. Look it up. This is not the only school it’s happening in. It’s happening in CA, TN, OR, etc. Look it up. There are multiple cases happening across the US right now.

          • master_chief_usn

Croquet player…you haven’t been looking very hard. World Net Daily is a news site where they catalogue instances of Muslims being given preference over Christians. Have you not seen where an airport will not allow a Christian to pass out tracts in the airport, but they constructed and maintain a “washroom” for use by Muslims only to wash their feet and hands before they pray? Why can’t they just go in a bathroom and use a bottle of water, like our traveling servicemen and women do when they need to freshen up? I have seen things like this and I am not even looking for it. I go online to find the weather report and there is an ad for a news site, with headlines like, “Christian arrested, but Muslims have their own feet-washing room…” You have to look harder, my friend. Remember, Christian News Network and World Net Daily.

          • sandraleesmith46

Your willful ignorance of the situation here is telling. You’ve made up your mind that it’s not happening and are turning a blind eye to the signs and practices of it happening all around us daily.

          • Heidi K.

This is part of the end times scenario, please study the Book of Daniel, Ezekiel 38 and the Book of Revelation! No man can change these events, the 7 year Tribulation with the antichrist and one world religion is right around the corner. It will start with a peace treaty made by the antichrist Please don’t take his mark (666 probably an RIFD chip on your right hand or forehead) and don’t worship him or you are doomed! There’s only one way out: you have to accept JESUS CHRIST – Yeshua Ha Mashiach – as your personal Lord and Savior who paid on the cross for your sins and came back to life on the 3rd day!!! We have to come to the cross as broken sinners. All born again Christians will be raptured before the 7 year Tribulation begins – please don’t get left behind! JESUS CHRIST will come back to earth for the Battle of Armageddon to set up HIS 1000 year kingdom and rule and reign the earth from Jerusalem, the future world capital!

        • sandraleesmith46

Constitutionally yes; in practice NOT at all.

      • Exactly!

    • calduncan

Anything short of a corpse isn’t real persecution, right?

Homosexuals claim that not getting a wedding cake from one bakery is “persecution.”

Looks like different standards for different groups.

Persecution of Christians = dead bodies (and nothing less)
Persecution of homosexuals = hurt feelings

That doesn’t look like “equality” to me.

      • james blue

Should it be legal in the US to refuse goods, services, employment, housing etc. to Christians? Are you for revoking big government anti discrimination and public accommodation laws that make it illegal to refuse goods and services because of our faith?

      • Croquet_Player

No. All persecuted minorities have plenty of corpses, which is an extraordinarily ugly standard you have chosen. This young woman was apparently burnt to death simply because she was a young Christian woman, which was unpopular in her town. Other people, young and old, all over the world, are murdered for the identical reasons, because they are gay, or trans, or of a certain gender, or of a particular religion, or no religion, or “not the right color” or any or all of the above. It is a disgusting scandal to even suppose that any of these innocent people, just going about their daily lives, should be subject to brutal, horrifying deaths by murderous thugs, anywhere on the planet.

Now if you want to talk about American citizens being denied their rights in the public marketplace, let’s talk about that. Can you buy any cake anywhere in the U.S. from any public cake shop? Me too! Fantastic! We’re Americans! Why should any other American have any trouble doing the same?

        • master_chief_usn

I didn’t mean to inject myself into this discussion, but just have to address two points from your comment above. Number one is…UNPOPULAR??? Did you say, “UNPOPULAR???” The Muslims HATE Christians in Pakistan and other countries! This murderer poured petrol over her and lit her on fire! The Romans didn’t even do THAT to Jesus (although they might have if somebody had suggested it.) A brand of automobile may be “unpopular,” or Kiwi fruit might be “unpopular” over there. But they HATE, and KILL Christians! Number two, that bakery is NOT a “public” business unless it is paid for and run by the government. That bakery was, and still is, a PRIVATE BUSINESS, where the owner can put up a sign, “Shoes and T-Shirt Required,” or “Employees Must Wash Hands After Using Bathroom!” Or, they SHOULD be able to state, “We do not cater to hate groups (the KKK wants a cake with the Confederate flag,) and, “We do not prepare wedding cakes for any ceremony except where there is a male groom and female bride. We do have a list of bakeries that provide those services. We ask your cooperation. Thank you.” I don’t recognize this country anymore. It is not the country I served for twenty-three years in the U.S. Navy. Our precious freedoms are being eroded, one Amendment at a time. God help us.

          • Croquet_Player

I thank you most sincerely for your service in the United States Navy. That your service was for for twenty-three years is remarkable, and outstanding. Your long years of work are a tremendous credit to you, your family, and to this great nation of ours. Whatever our differences may be in matters of opinion, I put them aside for the moment, and bow to your selfless efforts on behalf of all Americans. Thank you very much indeed.

          • master_chief_usn

Thank you, sir (well, I think you are a “sir.”) I never quite know what to say when someone thanks me for my service. The fact that you can put our differences aside for a moment and offer such a gracious comment says something about your character and personality. I wish all people on the Internet was as nice. You are a person with whom I can hold an intelligent discussion, and I like that. Our differences in these matters may never be truly reconciled, but if we can talk like this, like intelligent human beings, we will never lower ourselves by using insults and profanity to make our points. I thank you again for your nice post.

          • Beeg Noyz

Good answer for the cake issue ……

          • sandraleesmith46

They used pitch and burned Christians alive as torches for many of their nocturnal activities. That was another “favorite” of theirs. Actually that 1 continued into the medieval times. And I do agree this isn’t the America into which I was born or which I served either.

          • master_chief_usn

Thank you for your service, Nurse Smith. I love nurses…had some really great ones the last couple of years as I went in and out of hospital.

          • sandraleesmith46

Thank-you for yours as well Master Chief! Glad you got the right care! Have a blessed day.

          • Susan Perelka

The murder started in their “hearts” first , and as they nursed it, and meditated on it, it then manifested into action and gave birth to sin. I weep at all the hate in our world today. Many try and disguise it as tolerance, yet they are the most hateful. Like you, I don’t recognize this nation anymore either and I echo your last statement, God help us!

        • ppp777

Most of the time sodomites kill themselves because of their perversion .

  • All religion is mindless stupidity, islam is a particularly dangerous and objectionable form of mindless stupidity.

    • Heidi K.

You should study fulfilled Bible prophecy to see that the Holy Bible is the word of GOD. Please give your life to JESUS before it’s too late, judgement is coming, soon, the 7 year Tribulation is right round the corner!!!

      • Please do yourself a favour and shrug off the primitive, childish delusions which grip you.
As each year to come passes, you will find yourself waiting in vain for the fanciful “judgement” you speak off.
I don’t know your age, but consider this: when you grow old and frail, and in your final years, you will still be waiting – remember what I have said when your time grows near, to give yourself a chance at embracing reality before it’s too late.

        • Heidi K.

First of all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. 2 Peter 3:3

          • First of all, you must understand that you are in the grip of a delusion which blinds you to reality. As regards the “last days”, I repeat what I have said previously – as the days and years pass, you will continue to wait in vain, all the way to your death bed.
Wake up and smell the roses or waste your entire life, the choice is yours.

          • I note my replies have been deleted; intellectual dishonesty on display.

          • Susan Perelka

Abba Father, Forgive him and help Wayne Roberts to see Your truth. Reveal Your Son to him, help him to see the condition he is in, and his need for a Savior. Bless him by opening his eyes to truth. Thank You LORD for Your patience, loving-kindness, mercy, and compassion. I ask this through Your Beloved Son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. AMEN

          • Guess what Susan, your prayers appear to have fallen on deaf ears.
I can tell you why this is so – there is no god, no sky daddy father, no jesus, no lord, no saviour, and therefore no one or thing to hear your pleas.
Abandon foolish and pointless worship of the non-existent; wake up and smell the roses, embrace the beauty of the natural world without tainting your perception with childish notions of ghosts and goblins. Imaginary friends are best left behind in childhood.
I post this not with the naked intention of denigrating you, but with the sincere wish that you cease to waste your life.

          • Susan Perelka

That is your choice Wayne. I choose Jesus and I am still going to pray for you. You come here for a fight, I am not going to fight with you, but instead ask God to have mercy on you. Have a blessed day.

          • You judge me harshly Susan; my wish, as stated, is that you not continue to waste your life.
            “God” doesn’t exist.

    • ppp777

And you are going to get plenty of it , get used to it .

      • I’m unsure what you mean by that comment; would you please elaborate?

        • ppp777

The western world is embracing islam and is treating Christianity with contempt , you reap what you sow .

          • Politicians, media and what most folk contemptuously refer to as the coffee latte set are embracing islam as you say, and it’s a stupendously stupid thing to do. That said, all religious belief and practice is mindless and delusional, it’s just that islam is the worst of a bad bunch.

          • ppp777

There is nothing more delusional than atheism , the western world is upside down now because of it and you call ” religious belief and practice mindless and delusional ” that would be hilarious it weren’t so serious and damning .

          • What is hilarious is the willingness of folk to blindly believe in childish, patently ridiculous and thoroughly discredited fairy tales.
Imaginary friends are best left behind in childhood; the entire world, the West included, would be a much better place without the damning, to use your own descriptor, nonsense that is religion.

          • ppp777

And that coming from an evolutionist , I’m not going to repeat myself .

          • “Evolutionist”; that’s a new one.
Try “A person who has enough sense to realise that the natural world and all within it have evolved to their present state”.
P.S.: …with no input from a non-existent magical sky daddy.

          • ppp777

Like I said , it takes all sorts I suppose , but I’m afraid you stupidity is going to send you to hell , its your own fault sonny Jim .

          • As I have said many times, I’m amazed at the gullibility of theists; your own stupid gullibility is causing you to waste your life worshipping thin air and trembling before an imaginary “hell”.
            I pity you.

          • ppp777

The irony of that statement is mind blowing .

          • The gullibility of theists is astounding 🙂

          • ppp777

Again , that coming from an evolutionist .

          • Again, try “A person who has enough sense to realise that the natural world and all within it have evolved to their present state”.
Although I know this is a waste of time, having participated in a number of exchanges with theists in the past, and being aware of their unresponsiveness, here’s a few words aimed at demonstrating the foolishness of your stance.
What sort of entity equips its creations with critical inquiring minds then imposes brutal eternal torture for refusing to accept incredulous claims of magic and sorcery without a shred of evidence, demanding blind faith under threat of vicious retribution for non-compliance?
Is such an entity just, wise and compassionate?
Or is it sadistic, controlling and egocentric?
            Or is it non-existent?
So you’re stuck between a rock and a hard place, as we say in Australia, your “god” is either a brutal sadist or does not exist.
But relax, I’m not here to tell you that the entity that you have devoted your life to is a brutal egocentric sadist, just to expose you to the truth – it doesn’t exist.
It then becomes your task to come to terms with what I would imagine is the slightly less heart breaking alternative.
This is the challenge that the real world presents you with, the opportunity to come on board and divest yourself of myth and superstition, to appreciate and learn about the beauty and intricacies of the natural world without being consumed, imprisoned and suppressed by stories of ghosts and goblins.
The choice is yours – it pains me to know that you’ll almost certainly choose poorly; it is, however, your life and you must live it as you choose.
It’s just a pity that the choice was made for you by others.

          • ppp777

Read Romans one and two Thessalonians eight to twelve , they relate to reprobates like you perfectly , kjv of course .

          • Feel free to read from your silly book of fables; I prefer factual reading material to fiction.

          • ppp777

As I said , they relate to reprobates like you perfectly , pity .

          • As I have both said and implied, enjoy immersing yourself in your childish fables whilst I and others engage with reality.
            And yes, I pity you.

          • ppp777

You would not know reality if it hit you on the nose , such is a reprobate mind .

          • Look in a mirror, change your pet word reprobate to deluded and repeat your chant, to yourself, until reality dawns on you 🙂

          • Just had to add this, now that my mirth has subsided a little – a theist lecturing on reality, there’s a good one 🙂

          • ppp777

You are clearly brain dead , someone who is retarded is light years better off than the likes of you , you carry on believing in a fairy tail for adults which goes against all known natural laws , is no wonder the lake of fire is you’re destiny .

          • Brain dead is a descriptor fitting for fools such as yourself who fervently believe in childish nonsense. Threatening an atheist with an imaginary hell, you poor silly fool, is less effective than threatening a heavily armed warrior with a plastic wand.
Now go and stand in the corner and mutter to your imaginary friend, there’s a good boy.

          • ppp777

And that coming from someone who thinks nothing made everything , yeah right , go back to you’re ape worshiping and leave the thinking to people who still have their faculties .

          • Along with other theists, you think that everything was made by something that came from nowhere. You have no answers or credibility and your “thinking” barely qualifies as such, centred around delusional nonsense as it is.

  • Susan Perelka

Persecution, trials, and tribulations have always been a part of the christian walk. The Lord Jesus told us they would happen. But remember what this dear sister in Christ is experiencing at this moment. Unspeakable Joy! She is in the presence of our Savior. No more tears, no more pain, and no more sorrow. She is with Jesus forever! Keep telling the gospel message. Keep warning people of the judgement to come. Tell them how to go to Jesus in order to be saved from Gods wrath to come. Tell them of Gods mercy that He is offering them. Shine your light for all to see. Let them see Christ in you by your deeds and actions (fruit). Bear fruit for Gods glory! The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, faithfulness and self control. We are the salt of the world, but if we have lost our flavor then we are of no good to His Kingdom. Persevere, press on, and fight the good fight of FAITH. Long to hear Him say, Good and faithful servant, come enter my rest.

  • Heidi K.

A true Christian martyr! GOD comfort and protect her family.

  • Robin Egg

At least now she is pain free. Beloved sister in Christ. RIP dear soul.
