NAIROBI, Kenya (Morning Star News) – A Christian returning from an evangelistic outreach was killed on Sept. 29 in western Uganda when he and a colleague were attacked by three Muslims, including one upset that his sister had converted to Christianity, sources said.
Benjamin Kule Mayani, a 45-year-old teacher at Excellent Nursery and Primary School and a resident of Kasokero village in Kyondo Sub-County, Kasese District, was attacked at about midnight on Sept. 29 in Karambi Cell, Kisinga Town Council.
Mayani and his colleague Pascal Muhindo had received a telephone call from a man identified as Isifu Marjani who asked to meet Mayani at the school where he taught, according to an elder in the Anglican Church in western Uganda who spoke by phone with Muhindo, a member of his church, shortly after the attack.
Mayani and Muhindo were about two kilometers from the school when Marjani and two other Muslims intercepted them, said the elder, unidentified for security reasons, based on his conversation with Muhindo.
The Muslims questioned Mayani about the whereabouts of a woman identified as Sharifa, Marjani’s sister, who had converted to Christianity, the elder said, adding that the assailants continued questioning Mayani and Muhindo about Sharifa before one of them struck Mayani on the head with a large stick.
Muhindo fled to seek help from nearby residents.
Mayani had previously housed Sharifa and other Muslim converts to Christianity in his home later moving her to another home for security concerns, the elder said.
When Muhindo and residents returned to the scene, they found Mayani had been killed, the elder said.
The incident was reported to Kisinga police station, where police registered a murder case. Detectives examined and documented the crime scene, recorded statements from witnesses and recovered exhibits for forensic analysis.
Rwenzori East Police Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Elly Maate said Mayani and Muhindo were returning from Kisinga Town when they were attacked by the three men. Police said the attackers struck Mayani on the forehead with a blunt object, seriously injuring him, and he collapsed a few meters from the scene and died.
Mayani’s body was taken to Bwera Hospital for a postmortem examination.
Police said investigations are continuing as detectives work to identify those responsible.
The attack was the latest of many instances of persecution of Christians in Uganda that Morning Star News has documented.
Uganda’s constitution and other laws provide for religious freedom, including the right to propagate one’s faith and convert from one faith to another. Muslims make up no more than 12 percent of Uganda’s population, with high concentrations in eastern areas of the country.
